That’s such a great way to handle it! It’s hard work and a pain in the rear, but it gives back to the community! That’s what we call “restorative justice” now. It’s been shown to be so much more effective as a strategy to prevent/manage crime than “punitive justice.” It’s best paired with rehabilitation and material support, of course, to help them become better contributing members of society going forward. Punitive measures only really provide a sense of vengeance to other citizens, including any victims, but it doesn’t actually deter much, if any, crime. Recidivism rates are also higher. This tidbit of history really shows “punitive justice” is not even really the assumed “common sense” answer that you later learn is wrong when you look at the data. If they already had the concept this long ago, restorative justice obviously isn’t some crazy, modern concept. The term is more modern, but clearly not the concept it describes. What a very neat fact about South Carolina’s history!

Well done! When I was earning my Ultimate Outsider status, Little PeeDee SP was one of the last parks - and boy, was I suprised. Such a great park and I can't wait to get back. We're fortunate to have Rangers like Michelle who take pride in their jobs. It shows!

Here in the U.S., as well, but slang often has more than one meaning - especially over time.
