Good video. A book such as Jon Krakauer's 'Into Thin Air' is considered a classic mountaineering book, for those with a quite-specialized reading tatse. To get much out of reading such a book you need to be deeply into moutaineering, and/or the outdoors, outdoors survival, and nonfiction reading. Yes, such a book would be a tough chew for most young readers (under 40) to read this book and enjoy it, as most young readers under 40 like fantasy, gothic, romance, thriller, and sci-fi reads. But, at least you tried, and you'll easily sell the book, as it is a classic outdoors book in today's world.
@seventhchariot11 ай бұрын
Thanks, I'm actually very interested in nonfiction and books surrounding nature and the outdoors. My problem with this book had nothing to do with me not being interested in the subject matter, but with the writing style and the overall voice of the author. The book was also not tough to read, it just was not written in a way that appealed to me (and that's ok). I also think that saying readers under 40 aren't interested in nonfiction is false, nonfiction is a very popular genre and has many great books that appeal to a wide audience.

yeah it sucks when you can tell what an author was going for but just badly executed, like I read a really sad novel about a heavy topic [Edinburgh by Alexander Chee] but I ended up skimming the last 100 or so pages because I was just so bored, attempted to be poetic but it just fell flat and I got confused a lot and useless details that dont affect the scene. I dont DNF books I paid full price for T.T

@seventhchariot Жыл бұрын
EXACTLY! For me a 3 star book is just a book. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it, so it’s kinda just there. And trying to talk about something that made no impact on me is difficult which is why I hate doing wrap ups so much

Mine's Murakami lol, a shame because I like his universes and writing a whole lot but I can't take his juvenile and unsettling vision of sex anymore, it just makes me uncomfortable, especially since it involves sometimes straight up RAPE from a grown woman on a teenage boy, which is not even considered assault. It's just his fantasies on paper. I hate it. Also fetishizasion and sexualisation of young, not grown girls. It's just too much and he's contemporary too like he HAS the feedback but he goes on tf It's a shame cause other than that I find value in his work.
@seventhchariot Жыл бұрын
I hear that all the time about Murakami 💀 He’s definitely not an author I have any interest in reading

I totally agree with you about Sanderson. I think his writing is mediocre at best, his characters especially are very shallow. Mistborn reads like YA, which no one talks about, it's definitely not advertised that way. I think he's praised primarily because he's good with world building, but I don't care how interesting the magic system or history is if the story's a drag and I don't care about any of the characters.
@seventhchariot Жыл бұрын
I agree. If I don’t like the characters or the story feels like it’s dragging, then I won’t be able to get into the book. And I haven’t heard that about Mistborn but it’s good to know because now I have another reason not to pick it up lol (I just don’t tend to enjoy YA fantasy anymore)

Hey Angelina! You’ve got a pronounced dislike for what you don’t like in authors and stories, so I’m curious about the other end of that spectrum. What sort of authors/stories/troupes/genres interest you the most? This might make for a good video topic as well. So, I'm a big Brandon Sanderson fan, and as a fan I can confidently say I totally get where you are coming from. The Stormlight Archieves series (the one Way of Kings is from) is super long, and not just in word count. It takes a WHILE to be introduced to all the characters and for the story to really pick up. Please consider trying one of his other books! Warbreaker is an excellent Romance/Fantasy with a fascinating magic system and intriguing characters. I started out his works with the Mistborn series when I was 13, and it remains one of my favorites to this day. It still has its flaws of course, but if you're looking for an easy read to breeze through, this is it. If you're looking for a comic-book-ish style, the White Sand series is supposed to be really good. Personally, I haven't read it, so I don't know for sure, but the artwork i have seen is gorgeous and the premise sounds fascinating. All of this however, doesn't really show The main appeal of his series and that is the Cosmere. The cosmere is an almost MCU like universe in the sense that all of the stories are connected. I could talk about the Deep lore and intricate details for hours but for the sake of our time, allow me to simplify it by comparing it to the MCU. There are characters that appear across multiple different planets and different series. Despite being completely different the magic systems are also exactly the same. Sound confusing? It totally is at first, which is why I can understand why the way of Kings did not appeal to you. without experience in the cosmere beforehand, it can come across as confusing, long winded, and boring. All of this being said, please consider reading one of his other books. I swear you will not be disappointed :)

Hi. New to your channel! I didn't expect Brandon Sanderson on this list, but that's okay😂. The first ever books I read by him were the Mistborn trilogy. Hello, I just found you today and find your style and reasons very refreshing and similar to my own. I am also quite interested in the bookshelf behind you that seems to have a lot of books that look interesting and that you don't usually see in the standard setup of most, so I would love to give some of them a go. Are all those books in your goodreads lists somewhere? I can only decipher some on the video but not enough for my taste.

your video came up on my recommended feed and you have a a new subscriber just for mentioning rainbow rowell's racism and not mincing words. a lot of these i read and i feel similarly~ i'd even throw jay kristoff into that mix because he's really gross too. i also recommend the channel 'reads with rachel' because she does deep dives called "authors behaving badly" and she's going to start a series called "authors behaving excellently" which i'm excited for. she had to private some videos recently because some MRA jerk named brandon fero sent his legion of fanboys after her and proceeded to harass her on all platforms, including one where he paid to harass her on patreon. pretty creepy. anyway, thanks again and i look forward to your future videos!
