Nice presentation, Angus. My first proper bike was a 62 Tiger Cub, when I was 16. It taught me how to work on engines, because you didn't go anywhere otherwise. Those CB750s looked very pretty, but at those prices, you'd never dare take them out and ride them. My "vintage" Japanese bike is a cheap and cheerful 1980 GS550, which is my everyday ride, all year round. Saves a bit of wear and tear on my T140 (and my right knee).
@BSAPowerSet10 күн бұрын
Many thanks Rick. Same here re Cubs and likewise a ‘62 too. A practical classic is the way to go although it’s my foot rather than knee that gets a beating with Greg’s T140VJ and my A70L - so far!

Some very nice bikes there although unless you have a real interest in classic cars there are better shows to go to for bikes. I never wave at Scooters, have never seen Quadrophenia and have no intention of ever doing so haha 🤪. Actually the other week I filled up at Tesco Market Harborough before heading off to the NMM and there was a scooter filling up in front of me. I complemented him on his expansion chamber exhaust ! For some reason I really like the Honda CB 200’s now with their vinyl covered tanks although green rather than the red bikes at this show were my favourites. I’m sure I’ve seen the Honda Turbo Club and all their CX500’s at Founders Day in previous years.

Cheers Stew and I agree completely that there are better shows for classic bikes and at a relatively cheaper price.

Angus, the BSA Bantam was a great bike, even if it wasn't very powerful. What you have to remember is that a lot of boys joined the Post Office as telegram boys, just to get riding bikes - the Post Office Bantam of course - and that got a lot of people interested in motorcycling. Btw, my local council back in the 1970s before local government reorganisation (Scotland), persuaded myself and another lad to do the RAC/ACU training course as they were looking for ways to spend money. We did the course on the original D1 Bantams and for small comuter bikes in light traffic, they were ideal and great fun to ride after going to the course on my Thunderbolt. While I'm writing this, I seem to recall seeing some Post Office Bantams with pedals, i.e. mopeds, or is that my imagination playing up?
@BSAPowerSet12 күн бұрын
Indeed Alexander I wasn’t denigrating the ubiquitous bantam as they introduced many to biking and were a cheap and reliable steed but they’re just not my cup of tea. I’ve never seen any with pedals but I’m no expert on these even though you could argue that they were part of the power set!

Nice one, Angus. It's interesting at 2:49 to see that beautifully turned-out C15. My first bike, in 1981, was a '62 C15 and was painted in what I thought was orange but now turns out to be 'electron red'! It had chrome panels on the tank. The registration number was 702 CAM which would probably now be worth more than the 200-ish quid I paid for the bike. I rode it on 'L' plates. It was a steady plodder and my mates on FS1Es and SS50s could leave me standing but I'd always have the last laugh as I sailed through the 60mph barrier.

Good to hear it running, if only briefly. I've had the Charlie's type oil filter in mine for about 25 years and never had a problem with it stopping oil getting through (I've always used 15w50). I have had oil pressure issues on a few occasions, mainly when the oil pressure relief valve has stuck, and the excess pressure has blown the crank oil feed seal (in the timing cover) inside out, but that won't happen at idle speed. The other time was after having the oil system empty to change the oil pump - when I refilled it, the supply line from the tank had an airlock, and the pump wouldn't draw the oil through until I disconnected the line to bleed the air out and prime it. As you've already had it turning over and putting the light out, it must be primed, so it's not likely to be that, but it may be worth just pulling the oil line off the connector at the engine end to check that it's full.
@BSAPowerSet18 күн бұрын
Cheers Rick. I left it to settle and went back to it later and oil light now going out on kicking over 👍

The main “issue” I had with my T140V (T reg) back in the early 80’s was the oil light coming on, the first time it happened was on the M6 travelling from Birmingham back to Northamptonshire. I assumed it was low on oil but when I checked the level on the hard shoulder oil came pukking out of the frame, so there was plenty of oil there it was maybe not in the right place ? When I tried kicking the engine over and the oil light went off, and faced with no other option I limped the remaining 50 miles home with no apparent ill effects. After talking to a chap at Vale Onslow (when your show Fury was there) I stripped the oil pump and found it was working perfectly. The oil light came on two or three more times during rides and then the issue seemed to go away, I never got to the bottom of what the root cause was. The oil I used by the way was Duckhams Hypergrade 15/50. It would be lovely to see a little test run on the Bonnie once you are happy with it, permission/ insurance permitting although you don’t want it to get dirty either ! 🇬🇧
@BSAPowerSet18 күн бұрын
Thanks Stew for the anecdote. I left it to sit for a while and went back to it several hours later and the oil light started going out again on licking so all bodes well. You’re right about riding - the insurance will not allow unfortunately although I might try a bit locally to test brakes etc. if I can. Will take some advice.

Nice. When did Triumph start doing the bread box style tanks in the UK vs the export style rounded tank?
@alexanderpotts730819 күн бұрын
This shape of tank came in for the 1971 season with the 650 Triumphs and A65 BSA. However, it would most likely have been late 1970 when they started producing them as my original oil in frame BSA left Small Heath in January 1971. For 1972, the centre seam disapeared on both the Triumph and BSAs. If I remembber correctly, 1972 was also the year when the rubber knee grips were added to the four gallon UK tank

Glad you've got everything working properly. The electrical connections are far trickier to get right when you have to start from scratch and you can't refer to the original. You're right about those warning light connections, the original bulb holders are soldered directly to the wiring, without those bulky spade connectors on that "genuine Lucas" harness. Not much more to do now, and you can get your lift back.

Very relaxing, Angus. For me, that is. That's an interesting botch, er, remedial modification you've made to the front brake light switch. The VJ is looking rather beautiful and is a testament to your patience and attention to detail. Visited the show on the Sunday which was far the better day if you were riding to the show, which we were. My brother was not impressed with the Sloper custom bike ! Did see you on the stand as we walked past but you were deep in conversation so I didn’t say hello. The red Mk 2 Rocket was very nice, I believe the styling and ray gun silencers were criticised at the time which I don’t understand. The Fury looks a lot more modern than the CB350 which I believe first hit the market in 1968 so I’m not sure there is much else to say ? I never owned a Japanese two stroke but I was pleased to see so many immaculate examples on display along with Honda’s of the same era, although as you say it was a shame that there wasn’t a Black Bomber there. Very enjoyable vlog !
@BSAPowerSetАй бұрын
Cheers Stew - yes I enjoyed the show and the early Japs too, quite right regarding the CB350 - it had collared the market before the Fury had hit beyond the original P5 prototype but the Fury in the end I think did have more modern styling.
