This is probably my favorite video on youtube. I can't believe it's been 8 years. I've always dreamed of working on cargo ships. Even though Im afraid of the ocean and don't know how to swim, I find peace in it. I love cargo ship documentaries and I always come back to this at least every 6 month. Thank you for making this video.

I saw the USCG is extremely short in personnel. Why don’t you guys contract with them to help fill their numbers

USCG is technically military and therefore government-owned. Merchant Marine is private companies.

Every few years I return to this video when faced with a major fork in the road. I was 18 when I first watched it, I'm 27 now. Weighing all my options for this latest life changing stage and, as always, the merchant marine creeps back into my head. Maybe this time I'll actually go through with it.

I miss being a Sailor so bad although once a Sailor always a Sailor even if no longer going underway. I was in the U S Navy 21 years and 13 of those were spent on 3 ships 1 being a USNS merchant ship. Only those of us who have been there can understand the journeys we made. Some good some very bad. Fair winds and Following Seas brother. Stay safe

What does a QMED do? The engine department on a vessel is responsible for the main propulsion and auxiliary systems, and other mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and refrigeration systems, including deck machinery and cargo-handling equipment. Unlicensed mariners in the engine department work under the supervision of a licensed engineer. The unlicensed positions within the engine department include: wipers, oilers, electricians, pumpman, fireman, machinist, refrigeration engineers, and junior engineers. There are 5 QMED ratings, and different training requirements for each rating. The day to day duties of QMED mariners vary depending on the vessel type and the QMED endorsement the mariner qualifies for. They primarily work in the engine room, fire-room, machine shop, and steering-engine room.

What is QMED? Qualified Member of the Engine Department QMED is a key role in a vessel's engine department. Learn about the 5 QMED ratings and the steps to qualify for each. A QMED is a Qualified Member of the Engine Department working on a vessel. QMED crew members are responsible for the maintenance, operation, and repairs of the major mechanical systems on a vessel. Mariners serving in a QMED position must hold a QMED rating, but it’s an Unlicensed position. QMED is a USCG rating attached to the mariner’s Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC). QMED is the entry-level rating in the engine department. It’s one of the first steps toward achieving any Engineering Officer License. Essentially, QMED is the equivalent of an Able Seaman (Able Seamen work in the Deck Department rather than the Engine Department.)

Great documentary of your voyage. I took a similar trip as a Marine aboard a navy ship, and stopped in many of the same ports. It’s a strange feeling being back on land after 7 months at sea! Thanks for sharing.

My favorite thing to hear recently was of a preacher or someone like that who took the cargo ship crew out on the town while they are stranded in port. I think it was a Thai crew that was interviewed. They have US visas and went out to get snacks and other places to make it less boring to sit around and wait to get unstranded. ❤. Thank you for what you do and showing us around your ship!
