What I initially found most interesting about the South African art scene was that except for a handful of artists, most white South African artists seem to be totally ignoring where they were.

I have always been fascinated with the origins of Mythology and Religion. Especially the bizarre aspects of the stories and the miracles that occur. After reading Graham Hancock's book Supernatural I knew I had to do Ayahuasca.

julianventer.com/fantasy.html I believe that using the computer is a step forward in the evolution of painting. For me the personal computer has transformed the creation, perception and propagation of art. I enjoy the idea of working with light.

julianventer.com/galleries.html I graduated from high school in 1976, the year the revolution broke out into the open in South Africa. It was a frustrating time for me as I was acutely aware of the fact that whether I liked it or not I belonged to the group of oppressors, and being born with a white skin had entitled me to huge benefits while my fellow countrymen were struggling on a subsistence level.

The Artworks from the series "When Animals Could Speak" are inspired by a vision I had had back in 1987. The night after experiencing my first conscious 'Out of Body experience', or 'Astral Journey.' I dreamt that I was sitting at my desk and an ancient Chinese sage was standing behind me to my left helping me create an 'African Astrology' using the I Ching. The next morning I jumped up and started with the project that to this day inspires most of my art and life. Now I realize it is not a astrology for it does not relate to the stars but rather earth structures and phenomena, so for lack of a better word for now I will call it a "Earth-ology."
