The BF3 neutron detectors have a very short shelf and service life. However they are true geiger tubes 3He detectors are much better but have a very tiny output in what is called proportional mode. You can make your own neutron detection geiger tube by adding triethyl or trimethyl borane to argon or neon. Shild the tube with a few mm of lead to exclude gamma.

Ok understood about He3 that the ionisation pulses are weaker. From boron comes alpha particle that makes stronger ionisation pulses.

TV flybacks almost always have internal diodes inside the potted housing, since DC is necessary for CRT anode power supplies. Unless you have proven by experiment that there is no diode rectifying the output, you should assume it is a pulsed DC output - not AC. That would explain the behavior with the magnet.

Great to read your comment! I am lucky to have a very old flyback without internal diodes. I used it for Kirlian photography last year. There is a clip in youtube. AC goes capacittively through glass. The modern flybacks contain voltage multiplyer inside epoxy and give DC out. Last year I used hot air to soften epoxy and get the multiplyer diodes out making a lot of nasty smoke from burning epoxy.

Aliexpress electroschocker module gives DC out. I can try to swap + and - and see if the plasma streamer sticks to opposite side of glass tube without changing the position of the magnet

Thank you for this discussion. Looks like found an explanation. The output from flyback is not symmetric as mine a is one transistor generator. It is not sine output, but pulsed and voltage of opposite polarities is not the same. I should check with an oscilloscope

Natural background at sea level was only 4…12 n/min. Smoke detector Am pill in contact with BF3 tube or Be window from an x-ray tube (or Li from CR2302 battery) gave only 1n/s which was too little to observe Al or Ag activation. Not worth to try. And Fusor which could give more n/s presently have no motivation to build. It was a steep learning curve about n physics and electronics.

Finding specific scientific publications that directly cite the use of the Salaspils electron accelerator is challenging due to limited openly available documentation. However, this facility, historically part of the Salaspils Nuclear Reactor complex, contributed to research in areas such as materials science, radiation chemistry, and medical isotope production during its operational period. Collaborative work often involved institutions like the University of Latvia

The electron accelerator in Salaspils, Latvia, is a key piece of scientific infrastructure at the Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia, located in the town of Salaspils. This facility has historical and contemporary significance in the fields of nuclear physics, radiation research, and material science. Key Features of the Salaspils Electron Accelerator: Historical Background: Initially, the Salaspils site housed a nuclear reactor, which was established during the Soviet era in 1961 for research and energy production. The reactor was decommissioned in 1998, and attention shifted to other high-energy facilities, including the electron accelerator. Purpose of the Accelerator: The electron accelerator in Salaspils is designed for producing high-energy electron beams used in research. It supports experiments in radiation physics, material analysis, radiobiology, and other applied sciences. Applications: Material Research: High-energy electrons are used to study and modify materials, including their structural properties and radiation resistance. Radiation Studies: The accelerator aids in understanding the effects of radiation on various biological and physical systems. Industrial Applications: Used for testing components and developing radiation-based technologies. Medical Research: Some studies involve applications in radiotherapy and dosimetry. Modern Developments: The facility has undergone modernization to align with contemporary scientific needs and safety standards. It serves as a key hub for collaboration between Latvian researchers and international scientists. Role in Latvian Science: The Salaspils electron accelerator is a cornerstone of Latvia's scientific infrastructure, attracting both local and global research projects. It also plays a role in educational initiatives, providing a platform for training and developing expertise in nuclear and radiation physics

It has been known since the 1930s that Brazil nuts contain relatively large concentrations of barium (approximately 0.1-0.3% by weight). In our laboratory we measured the barium content in the meat (endosperm) of the nut at close to 0.3%. That Brazil nuts also contain high levels of radium was first reported in the 1950s (Turner et al 1958). Barium and radium are group II elements and their chemical behavior is very similar. The difference between the barium and the radium is that radium is radioactive. To be specific, the radium in Brazil nuts is a mix of Ra-226 and Ra-228. Of course, the various decay products of Ra-226 and Ra-228 are also present. Although the radioactivity is not high enough to be detectable with a simple survey instrument, a one to five minute count on the powdered meat of the nut with a pancake GM or ZnS detector connected to a scaler will indicate that the beta and alpha activities are significantly above background. Brazil nuts are the seeds of Bertholletia excelsa, a large tree that is grown in various parts of world, not just Brazil. The nuts, in groups of 12 to 25 much like the sections of an orange, form the globular (4-6” diameter) fruit of the tree. It is not true, as is sometimes thought, that the high concentration of radium in Brazil nuts is due to elevated levels of the uranium and/or thorium series in the soil in which the tree grows. The accumulation of the radium (and barium) is due to the very extensive root system of the tree. For what it’s worth, measurements by Penna-Franca et al indicated that higher radium concentrations are found in the leaves and cork of the tree than in the nut. The Brazil nut has a high lipid (ca. 60%) and protein (ca. 15%) content. The calcium content is ca. 0.2%. Radium Content As might be expected, the reported concentration of Ra-226 and Ra-228 vary, but overall, the radium concentrations in Brazil nuts are 1,000 times higher than those in other foods. The following are representative of some of the measurements that have been performed: Turner et al (1958): approximately 1.8 pCi/g Ra-226 Penna-Franca (1959): approximately 2 pCi/g Ra-228 Penna-Franca et al (1968): 075-3.6 pCi/g Ra-226 in the nut (3.1-113.5 pCi/g in ash of nut) 16- 3.6 pCi/g Ra-228 in the nut (5.3-114.5 pCi/g in ash of nut) Smith (1971): up to 6.6 pCi/g Ra-226 in the nut Gabay and Sax (1969) determined that most of the radium of ingested Brazil nuts was not retained by the body. @minhenes
@minhenes 3 ай бұрын
You are right it is 50 k cps. That is quite high rate. 50 kHz would be above hearing range if it was possible to listen in a speaker. On the flight back in the X-ray machine in Gothenburg got 75 k cps. Very impressive that Rafiacode can count so high rates mening that the photodiode pulses must be short.
