Honestly, even though I live in Canada and it is not the exact same scenario as the states, substitute teaching is the best way to be a teacher these days. I am a teacher with my professional certification in Alberta Canada, which requires a large number of hours as the primary teacher as well as complete three to four in-depth evaluations from school and district leadership endorsing teaching professional competencies. With such a commitment, I expected to have some bumps in the road with my chosen vocation, but it was so much worse than I ever could have thought. The students were not ever the issue, neither were the long hours planning and building lessons that were engaging to students. For me, neither was the assessment and evaluation process the issue. It was absolutely soul sucking that the role of teachers has been politicized and outright attacked where I live. It resulted in me having to delete all social media and not being able to properly participate in local and provincial civics. It was also wretched to need to prepare the babies for lockdowns and such. In Alberta, all teachers, including substitutes are required to have a min 4 year degree with a teaching certificate. But subs now have the best gig out of all teachers. They have the privilege of teaching the awesome kiddos, they don't have to do the planning, nor parent emails, nor report cards, not even marking unless the sub plans request that. In Alberta Canada subs do get benefits, which is also a difference. But either way, I completely agree with this video 😊 Kiddos need as many safe adults as possible within their lives, and contributing to young lives is so rewarding. I would not go back to full time teaching, but I would 100% be a sub anyday.
