It works to scare lizards around the house in Florida, it leaves. Bet better not grind it.
@FarmsteadDream4 күн бұрын
I lived in Florida as a kid. I actually started school (1st grade) in St. Petersburg. I remember the lizards well. I would find an empty coke bottle and go outside and put grass in it, catch lizards and put them in hoping to have a pet. I never succeeded with that endeavor lol. They always died and I was so disappointed. I don't know that they gave much benefit to my garden because I still had leaf footed bugs everywhere. Next year, I'll give them to the chickens!
@GARDENER42Ай бұрын
I've been putting roughly crushed eggshells in my compost for many years. TBH I think the only benefit is as they break into smaller pieces, they help with soil porosity. I don't bother washing them & have found zero deterrence effect towards snails, slugs, cutworms etc. Unless your soil is _extremely_ acidic, the calcium contained in the shells will take many years to become available to plants.
@FarmsteadDream4 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! They definitely didn't keep the bugs off my tomatoes this year! I had leaf footed bugs in abundance .🥴 I will try the compost pile for them next! tfs

I have crushed my eggshells in the past. This year have had some spoiled milk so I poured it around the base of my tomato plants and they all exploded, they must really love calcium!
@FarmsteadDream4 күн бұрын
Ah! Yes! I just heard of using spoiled milk in your garden this week! I'm definitely going to be doing that too. It's good to hear that it worked for you ... thank you!
@heidivanharper7555Ай бұрын
As a former military family, we lived and gardened everywhere from the East Coast, Westcoast, Deep South, and subarctic Alaska. Powdered eggshells finely ground in a blender stops blossom end rot in tomatoes and gives a beneficial slow release of calcium. I start saving shells during Easter, toast them in the oven. powder and put in a jar to use for summer.
@FarmsteadDream4 күн бұрын
Firstly, thank you so much for your service! I truly appreciate your family and the sacrifices made for our country! This is a great idea! I'd think they'd break down better, for quicker benefit for the soil too. I'm definitely going to try this in my next garden, Thank you!
@pandapearl385Ай бұрын
I grind my egg shells in the coffee grinder and then put some in the hen house for the ladies. The rest I dump in my compost tea along with a tablespoon of Epsom salts and wood ash. The calcium and magnesium prevents blossom end rot and the phosphorus in the ashes helps nourish the blooms.

I heard you mentioned putting your flowers in pots to move some with you. Peppers do well in pots, and can be over wintered in your shed/house etc to bear fruit again next year. The same goes for tomatoes, but your plants are hugged, so may not transfer to pots very well . Enjoy your new home! New to your channel.
@FarmsteadDream4 күн бұрын
Yes! I did bring a few with me! I knew that about peppers ... just learned that this year ... but I had no idea I could do it with tomatoes too! I already ripped them out and I'm so sad about it. Thank you so much for the tips. I will overwinter my peppers this year, at least. They tend to be the most difficult to start. Next year, I will try the tomatoes too! I'm so glad to meet a new friend! Thank you! Sorry for the delay in my response. This move has taken up the whole of 2 months and I haven't gotten to respond to messages in forever. Your garden looks great! I'm doing several in my back, front, and side yards but it's been raining so much where I live that I haven't put alot of my seedlings in the ground for fear they'll get waterlogged. I had about 30 garlic that rotted in grow bags because they got too much rain and not enough time to dry out. I have tomatillos, Chinese cucumbers, peppers, Brussels Sprouts, and a few Gobstopper cherry tomaoes planted, but alot more varieties hardening off on the front porch.

Thank you so much! Oh no! I so hate to hear that about your garlic. I'm afraid mine isn't going to give me a great harvest this year ... but I'm learning things so that makes it worth it. I have worried about the weather here this Spring because we've had lots of storms with hail and last year the hail killed all of my seedlings and I had to completely start over. Yum! I love the variety of goodness that you are planting. Hopefully, your weather will cooperate so you can get all your plants in the ground soon. Thank you so much for watching. Big Hugs!

Those are called biennials. They grow leaves the first year, then go to sees the secind year. Another biennial is Queen Ann's Lace. The chard leaves will not taste as good in year two, especially once it has made flowers and seed. That's why people plant it new each year, the leaves are more tender and tastier.
