Here is the REAL sad part for me. I use to LOVE Meryl. Loved every movie she is in. I would have been like so many of you on here just praising her performance, but in recent years she's crossed the line like many other Hollywood ACTORS! She's attempted to use her celebrity status to push HER OWN personal political views and that's where she lost me. She has selective outrage as well. She will speak out and be critical of certain people's actions if she doesn't agree with them, however when it came to Harvey Weinstein, the CREEP THAT SHE WAS CLOSE FRIENDS WITH and most certainly was aware of all of his disgusting actions, but when it came to him.... SILENCE and pretends she knew nothing. Now I have no use for her anymore. Like so many other Hollywood "elite" that live in their ivory palaces and act like they are better and more intelligent than everyone else. They are just ACTORS and you can't believe or trust anything they say. She's FAKE!

I know that the scene and story are controversial. I watched this scene with absolute horror when I was about 10. There's a distinct absence of "Take me instead" from Sophie. I appreciate she was put in an unimaginable situation by an evil man. She was quick to let him know that she was racially pure to save herself. I think I would have been happy to die with both of them, if the nazi world was all that would be left to survive in. I would die knowing that it wasn't my choice at all.

I met Meryl Streep years back, at a store I worked at in NYC. She had a baseball cap pulled down & was quietly browsing . I asked if I could help her & she humbly declined. Just her demeanor at that moment was so unpretentious & “cool”. Lots of respect for her “class”.

Meryl is the best actress that ever lived. It's just that simple. She was nominated 30 times orso and won 3 oscars. She should have won at least 10.

The calmness of the Nazi soldier is what really gets me. First he tells her she's beautiful...then he tells her he wants to get her into bed. Then he references Christ when talking about children...and then tells her she has to choose which one must die. His voice and demeanor are almost soothing, but his eyes are cold and reptilian. The contrast of opposites is very interesting. I know Meryl is the star here, but the actor who played the Nazi is fantastic too.

I'm curious about this. Meryl is an actual genius and this scene is breathtaking but how could she have only read it once? She had to learn to say it in impeccable German.
