Tip: fill new oilfilter with fresh oil and put it in place so the olipressure is directly on after starting.

Here's another tip: the original vacuum-operated fuel tap is notoriously troublesome. It's prone to sticking open when you stop riding, allowing fuel to flood the crankcase via the airbox, potentially wrecking the engine because the crankcase breather tube feeds into the airbox. Change the old petrol tap for a simple manual gravity fed one that you can turn off yourself. Then drill a hole in the bottom of the airbox so any future overflow goes harmlessly to the ground, not into the engine. Just a few quid and few minutes could save you from disaster. 😊😊😊 Edit: changing the plugs is totally impossible without the correct long reach tool, either with a flexi stem with a suitable joint.

Ill give you a worse one, i rebuilt the carbs 3 weeks ago, all new parts, i forgot to rebuild the fuel tap, the fuel tap failed a few days ago, because the float seals, held back the fuel, it forced it's way up the vacuum pipe, flooding cylinder 2, air box, and crankcase, this hydrolocked my er5, 5 litres of fuel mixed with the oil, ive drained the oil/fuel mix, flushed with new oil, replaced the oil filter, filled up with 10w 40 full synth and rebuilt the fuel tap, i also drilled a 10mm hole to allow the fuel out in future. one additional thing i did, i fitted an inline on/off tap on the carb rail feed pipe, this allows me to turn fuel off whenever i want.

@@10feetup well done. If only I'd done all this on my first er5! Just bought another one off gumtree for £650 with those exact mods already done. These bikes are amazing value, don't pay a grand for one.

@@TomBartram-b1c my er5 is a 2007, i didnt pay alot for it, as it was a bit scabby, ive rebuilt the fuel system, brakes, coolant system and fitted various other new bits over the last few weeks

@@10feetupI intend to spend the bare min on mine apart from oil and filters now n then. I'm just gonna ride it and ride it and if it gives me another 20k/ three years then that's CHEAP motoring. Even if it blew up tomorrow (which it won't) I'd get my money back as the clocks alone are worth 100. It does 180miles off 12 litres which is better than my old 125 Varadero. Happy riding!
