We really lost the plot in the mid 2000s / early 2010s. A lot of those best cinematography winner were actually just CGI heavy generic crap. But we were way too dazzled by it.

A lot of all time great cinematographers and beautiful movies. I have been lucky to have worked on a couple of these films and with twenty of these cinematographers over the last 45 years. 2 have won three, 4 have won two.

My opinion 2002 - shrek - absolutely deserving 2003 - Nemo - deserving because of terrible competition 2004 - the incredibles - deserving but so did shrek 2. 2005 - Wallace and the gromit - undeserving, howls moving castle or corpse bride should have won it. 2006 - happy feet - idk, cars and monster house were nominated and they do deserve it. 2007 - Ratatouille - deserving 2008 - wall E - deserving but kung fu panda too deserved it 2009 - UP - deserving but coraline deserved it too 2010 - toy story 3 - deserving 2011 - rango - undeserving, kung fu panda 2 should have won 2012 - brave - undeserving and the nomination list was awful 2013 - frozen - deserving due to terrible competition 2014 - big hero 6 - undeserving because that movie was underwhelming and tales of princess kaguya should have won it. 2015 - inside out - don't care about this year 2016 - zootopia - undeserving, Moana was better 2017 - coco - undeserving but default win due to horrible competition since the boss baby was chosen instead of your name. 2018 - spider man ITSV - absolutely deserving 2019 - toy story 4 - undeserving, this movie shouldn't even been made and how to train your dragon 3 was worthy 2020 - soul - deserving 2021 - encanto - i dont care 2022 - del toro's Pinocchio - absolutely deserving 2023 - the boy and the heron - absolutely deserving, but so did spider man ATSV.

You gotta kinda notice how the movies get worse as time goes on and how some of the best directors are snubbed every time. Where is The Host? GATTACA? Oblivion? Tron Legacy? Top Gun Maverick? Mad Mad Fury Road? The Matrix Reloaded? Alpha? Togo? Shutter Island? To say nothing of foreign films like Hero, The Flowers of War, The Grandmaster.

Encanto should never have won. Mamoru Hosoda's "Belle" and Patrick Imbert's "Le Sommet des dieux" are a thousand times more interesting.

Whiplash should've been nominated for best cinematography. You can tell in Whiplash and La La Land that Damien Chazelle is a master at using color to tell a story.
