I've used the 206 for over a decade and from experience, if you fill it with water from your tank first up to the inlet and outlet holes this will help and prevent the need to prime at all. Once turned back on and the bucket pump starts making a sound like it's struggling, then tilt the filter bucket slightly from side to side and this will help the pump draw out the air pockets between the filter media! In relation to the vibration, I have a towel under my filter which sits inside a cabinet my tank sits on. I hope this helps! 4:57

This method has also worked for me! My cultures take a little longer than the 36 to 48 hour mark, but that’s mostly because I don’t really keep the cultures as warm as a lot of people would want. After a week though I’ve got more Infusoria then I know what to do with! I keep 3 or 4 cultures going at one time too. I do have one question though. Would you continue to add yeast after a lot of the paramecia dissapear from the water?
@jaymiller32382 ай бұрын
I tried it once but it’s no easier or quicker than starting a fresh batch

Thank you so much for this video. I snicker every time you call them cooties. Now I feel confident in my ability to culture infusoria. It's amazing how little we know about the natural world and decide to bring nature inside without being prepared. Fortunately, my rainbow fish fry spotted Infusoria on the glass inside my nursery tank because I was nervous as heck that I was going to starve them to death. Again, thanks for the video. Going ahead and subscribing just to hear you say cooties again.

What is the shelving shown around the 1 minute mark? It looks great.
@jaymiller32384 ай бұрын
The shelving at 01:06 is Gorilla shelving from Costco. The cabinet under the aquarium at 01:07 was purchased with the aquarium from an unknown fish store. It wasn't made specifically for the tank.

Jay did you ever figure out why? Let me know necause mine are cloudy and jave surface scum
@jaymiller32384 ай бұрын
No, the problem seemed to resolve itself. Have a look at the comments. Someone said it was a harmless bacteria that shows up in beer brewing and pickling when the temperature goes above 23°C. At the time, my cultures were in the closet of my residence. Since then, they’ve been in the basement and I haven’t had any issues. For what it’s worth…
@mr.octopus69724 ай бұрын
You did this the natural way (nothing wrong with that, but...) and that is why it took so long. Boost the bacteria bloom with bread yeast. Boost the green water with spirulina. No need for disgusting decaying vegetables and the smell is bearable. 2 days to a week time and you will have a great culture.

I heard that WCMM need fresh water and will breed if left over night and as soon as it gets light, did you do any big water changes? I didn't even try and in my aquarium that has lots of things that could eat their eggs I had 3 hatch out from me just doing a 50% water change( my aquarium also has lots of java ferns).

Wow, that piece of driftwood shown at 1:01 is fabulous.(Lead plant weights? Isn't lead highly toxic and deadly to fish? I think so.)
@jaymiller32386 ай бұрын
From buceplant.com - Although these weights are commonly referred to as “lead weights” in this hobby, they aren't actually made of lead. Our weights are made from a Zinc Magnesium alloy that is completely harmless to all of your tank's inhabitants.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, those are called "Kahm yeast", or so called by us homebrewers and fermented food nerds. Contrary to the name, Kahm are not actually yeast but a few different strains of "harmless" bacteria. They are considered OK to have occasionally in fermented beer, pickles and sauerkraut. Personally I don't like them. I have no clue why they have a detrimental effect on your eel colonies though. Needs separate research. P.s. They usually occur when fermentation temperature is over 23°C. If that helps.

nice looking fish, i recently bought 15 golden white cloud minnows and only one of the males has this almost orange to red color that your fish are having. I hope to be able to breed from this male or find some other with this color depth.
@jaymiller32388 ай бұрын
Good luck with your breeding project. It can be hard to find quality breeding stock. The last time I ordered a group of standard White Clouds they came in mostly bronze with red fins, not the expected silvery blue. SMH

Hi, I just bought my first culture and started a few culture. All of which had the same white foam on top. I read ur comments that u went away for 3 weeks and it resolved itself. So does that mean I just leave them aside without doing anything and it should go away? Would appreciate your input because I can’t seem to find any information about this phenomenon

What's a spawning mop?
@jaymiller323811 ай бұрын
Those clumps of green yarn you see at 00:55. Think of them as artificial bushes where the fish can deposit eggs. Once the eggs have been laid, the mops can be easily removed before the parents eat the eggs and placed into a separate hatching tank.

These were old white clouds right? After the first year egg production goes markedly down in most egg layers, especially white clouds. This is most likely the reason you only saw a couple fry.

How deep of a sand layer did you cap with? I've got 40lbs of eco-complete in my 20 gallon long, but the plants just don't seem to be taking. I just started up diy CO2 to see if that helps, but I'm not opposed to ~1in/20lb bag sand cap if that's enough. I'd rather not go the route of removing some of what I already have.
