Hello Arron. Calling from East Anglia😊 I just discovered you and have subscribed. I'm a total novice and know nothing about music theory, but I try to play very Early Music on a 17 key, C tuned kalimba. The sheet musics I find are in every key imaginable, often include what I am told are A3 and B3, and are peppered with sharps and flats. I send the scores to a lovely chap in South America and he does his best to transpose them into the key of C, and shove them a bit higher up the stave for me. But he has (very unselfishly) told me that I should get a chromatic kalimba which he says would let me play anything. So your video has been invaluable, because I was considering the 41 key Seeds kalimba. Maybe this wasn't out when you made this video? One of your contributors has pointed out that it holds its tuning better than the 34 key Seeds ( which you have said is a problem with the 34 key Seeds, thank you for that information). But, as you have probably seen by now, 2 years on, the 41 Seeds has THREE (!) rows of tines with the 4 base keys logically tucked away under the 17 - whatsit, diatonic? - keys, and then the full complement of sharps and flats on the top row. That's so clever! Although the Seeds sound isn't a patch on your Mount Doom. I'm finding your videos very insightful, have you considered providing some kind of advice or encouragement service on Patreon? I'd join!

Hi Aaron, thank you for sharing this video! I wanna ask if you ever saw a 34-key kalimba that looks like this : kzbin.infozS6ld9jVqPQ?feature=share (see the below part of the screen) I'm currently confused which type of 34-key kalimba I should buy ; the upper one or the lower one? Please let me know in the comment if you don't mind! Thank you ❤️
@DiscoverLyreHarp Жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your comment :) I’ve seen 34 key kalimbas that look like that before in KZbin but I’ve never played one sadly. I think the upper one is easier to play though. It fits in your hands better and it’s more convenient to reach all the tines. I believe if you’re used to standard 17 key kalimba the upper one will be an easier transition :) Hope this helps!

@DiscoverLyreHarp Жыл бұрын
It’s been a while since I played this kalimba. But if I remember correctly the bottom row is tuned c major. And you hit the tines from the bottom to increase the pitch and hit the tines from the top to lower the pitch. There should be a gap in the back of the instrument so that you can hit the bottom row of tines from the top.

@@DiscoverLyreHarp I’m having so much fun with my 17 key kalimba from Eastrock… no dead tines at all… it sounds beautiful. I read music, so having a 34 key kalimba would not be overwhelming. The price of the 34 key ones is a bit daunting. But I do love the Seeds maker, and I might be able to get one soon. Thank you for your quick reply! I will watch more of your videos.

@@lindafitak I’ve not heard of Eastrock before will have to check them out! Glad to hear it’s got no dead tines and sounds so good :) yeah I reckon you will be flying with a 34 key if can read music! The price is quite high but I guess you have to pay that for a quality 34 key, due to how much harder they are to build. Oh thank you so much for watching my videos :)

Did your kalimba arrive tuned? The reason why I’m asking is that I bought the same model from Amazon and when I went to play it, it was terribly out of tune. 😭 I packed it up and returned it, because it sounded so bad (didn’t resonate as well as my Lingting kalimba).
@DiscoverLyreHarp2 жыл бұрын
Mine needed a fair amount of tuning if I recall! And my main complaint with these kalimbas is that they slip out of tune a lot when being played. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience :(

Is it normal for the sharps on the Seeds kalimba to rattle? I've returned two that I bought on Amazon now for that. They sounded like the keys were vibrating against loose metal somewhere creating a distracting buzz on every pluck, almost to the effect of when you drape a chain over the keys. I tried to wiggle them around and position them differently but I couldn't get rid of the noise. Also like you said in the video, one of them just couldn't hold a tuning. The lowest G key would fall out of tune right before my eyes. I just had to pluck it 4 or 5 times before it fell lower than C.
@DiscoverLyreHarp2 жыл бұрын
I don't think its normal for them to rattle. I have not noticed that with my one. The lowest notes have quite large movements to produce the tone, but I would not say it was a rattle. Have you got one now that does not rattle? If not I would send them back again. The tuning is a real issue. The seeds just does not seem to hold tuning and I have to fiddle with it quite a bit. I can hear it falling out of tune as I play it. I am not sure what causes the tuning problem but it sure is annoying!

Yes , I had one and gave it away. "They sounded like the keys were vibrating against loose metal" <-- true Every time I had to tune it before playing. Comparing with the other three Ling Ting kalimbas, Seed needed more tuning work to do
@Ultimaniacx42 жыл бұрын
@@yipsue3168 If you're ever in the market for one with the range of the Seeds, I'd recommend the Chills Angels ECO 34 key. After the troubles I had with Seeds, I got one of these and it's been solid. One quirk is that you need needle nose pliers that come with the kalimba to tune down the bottom keys because the back is blocked by the bridge. But the thick metal of the bridge helps it keep everything nice and solid and in tune.
@yipsue31682 жыл бұрын
@@Ultimaniacx4 Thanks for your precious advice. I have been checking out the Chill Angels 34 keys recently and have watched many videos about this brand. They have several models like the latest hollow 34 keys, classic flat 34 keys and new 36 keys. Yes Chill Angel can keep in tune because the producer put effort into structure of the tines, as what they told me. But now I might change my mind because Ling Ting family comes a new member, the 34 keys, more recently. The Poopoopido kalimba sound very natural and nice too. Of course the price is way higher. If I have enought budget, I would want to buy all of them and make a comparison.

This may be a dumb question, but I am completely new to this: If I buy a Kalimba Songs book that has numbered notation for songs, can I follow that same notation for both C and B Tone Kalimbas? Would it sound right if I just follow the numbers - right but in a different tone? Or would it be 'out of key'?
@DiscoverLyreHarp2 жыл бұрын
Hey :) don’t be worried about questions being dumb. Ask away! Will always try help if I can :) You can follow the same number notation for both a C and B kalimba. All you would be doing is playing the song half a step higher or lower. We mainly recognise music through the differences between notes. As that would be the same the song would still work. You would just be playing the song in a different key that’s all :)

@@DiscoverLyreHarp I have one more question - did importing a Kalimba into the UK cost a lot in Customs Excise Duty? I notice it looked like $15.00 charge on the front of the packaging? I ask because the Kalimbas are clearly cheaper from the source (especially Seeds), but not if there's a big additional Customs charge to the UK where I live too. Thank you again. Just subbed!

@@goldeneddie I’m sorry I can’t actually remember how much I paid for this kalimba in import duty :( I know that I got the seeds from Amazon but can’t for the life of me recall what I paid on postage. I believe though kalimbas are usually cheap enough that you don’t pay a large import duty. It’s usually the postage costs that are more. Ofc worth checking with each individual kalimba you buy that’s an import :)

You mentioned that the Seeds is easier to tune, but that bottom row doesn't look very accessible from the back? Does the hammer reach?
@DiscoverLyreHarp2 жыл бұрын
If you use the small end of the hammer it reaches a lot easier :) especially easier if you have the kind of tuning hammer where the small end is like a bullet. It’s still a little fiddly but doable
