very informative indeed. I run my games on my NEC PC98 computers via RS232S "com port" pigtail midi in+out and the games are 90% supported. I have to manually remove the midi cables depending on the games I run. I have a few modules; MT-32, MT-120S, Cm-300, Suzuki SMT-1 / ROland MT90s Floppy drive midi player

G’day! Just happened to come across this video when looking for how to hook up a SC-55MKII I just purchased. Unfortunately I purchased the exact eBay midi China cable you showed. I had a look on AusPcMarket and can’t find the one you got. Any chance you have the original link to the product or a make/model I could search? On another note, you have a fantastic channel. You should have over 100K subs like Phil. I’m blown away you only have under 100. I lived in Perth for 10 years. Living in Brissie now. I love restore PC’s too :-)

Hi, and thanks for your kind words - I really appreciate that. Unfortunately AusPCMarket don't sell them anymore and I've been unable to find them anywhere else (I should have bought up a heap when I had the chance). Your best option now seems to be either the DB15MIDI from Serdashop, or making your own (those metal backshells look like they should have room inside, so you could probably modify the one you bought).

Update... see cablesonline.com.au - I did an online chat just now and they claim to have plenty in stock, and that they'll be a regular item. See how you go if you place an order with them. Hopefully they're the real deal and not just a straight through cable.

Thanks for the reply! I ordered a couple of midi cables from cablesonline. They look identical to yours (they are even labelled IN/OUT). All work perfectly! Very happy.@@ReplayPCs

Certainly delivered on the audio theme👍 I’m amazed at the timing consistency you achieved. I’d have expected much more variation between load times of the different specced machines, and between runs due to vagaries of mechanical drives. Maybe it’s testament to the simplicity of the era when operating systems only did what they were told and weren’t juggling a queue of other mystery tasks to randomly tie up the HD and throw the ideals of consistency and predictability out the window. /rant, cool niche challenge and result👍 Any findings on how closely matched the playback speed is between machines? It’d be interesting to know how quickly MIDI would drift between old general purpose PCs (and how it compares to a pair of eg Atari STs or new Mac Pros). I guess clock locking exists because people got sick of discovering the answer to the drift question, but I still kinda want to know🤷‍♂️

Great to see you back on the tubes mate. This info may have been helpful back in the day. As It was, I was convinced my P100 MB couldn't switch to the required voltage of the P200MMX I'd just purchased and I ordered an entire new MB lol. Oh well.

What, an MT-32? Patience and diligence usually pay off but you need to be willing to wait, sometimes years. Marketplace, sites like Gumtree and Craigslist, keep an eye on secondhand dealers, etc. There's also zenmarket (be aware of voltage differences), but the gap with eBay pricing has narrowed a lot. If you meant a MIDI cable though (referring to the other comment) the cheapest option is DIY.

One other option for MIDI is an MPU-401 (external box), perfect for this precise application. It connects to a PC using a DB 25 cable with a Roland MPU-IPC card. The box itself has two midi outputs, so one for the MT-32 and the other for the SC-55 mk2. I tested it with the one that I wasn't using powered off and it worked as expected. Since many and maybe most games let you choose the midi device, it might be possible for the both to be powered on without any interference from the other, but I did not test this. Unfortunately MPU-401's price and availability is a show stopper for this solution. From an audio perspective, the hardware mixer will definitely be my choice. I will probably go with the new Mackie 5 channels mixer which can be had for around $60--$80 and will do the trick for the 3 stereo inputs.

Note that Edirol got the same mixer than Rolands MX-5 in black for the full black midi setup.

I got an MT-32 connected to a SC-55 MK II using the audio line inputs but i don't need to switch on the SC-55 to get the sound looped through the line out connected to my computer. My SC-55 can stay in standby mode and still provide audio loop as well as midi bypass connectivity (the midi in signal coming from my computer is available on both midi out and midi through when the SC-55 is in standby). I don't know if it's a normal behaviour or if it's just a characteristic specific to the MK II but i must admit it simplifies a lot the daisy chaining procedure as far as there is no risk that way to get both SC-55 an MT-32 to play at the same time. When i play a game requesting MT-32, i just switch off the SC-55 and when i need to play a game using general midi i switch on the SC-55 and switch off the MT-32 😁

Thanks, that's good to know! I've never actually tried it with my SC-55MkII, only the SC-155 for this video. That would certainly make things a bit easier. 🙂

@@Dark_Jaguar Looks like prices are up and availability down. Could be worth making your own if you're handy with a soldering iron. There are schematics online... if you only care about MIDI out functionality you just need a 74LS00 and a 220 ohm resistor.

Nice info. Just got a SC-155 which ended up being cheapest option that guaranteed it works. I was going to buy the cables like you showed but Serdashop(makers of the Dreamblaster wavetable cards) have a gamport2midi dongle that just lets you plug in to the gameport and just plug in midi cables to the other end.
@ReplayPCs
@ReplayPCs 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yep those dongles are pretty good because they have two MIDI outs (both carrying the same signal as obviously the soundcard only has one out). If you're only running two modules then that negates the need for a MIDI thru box, or the daisy chaining option requiring both modules to be turned on. A little bit more expensive than the normal MIDI adapter cable though once you add in shipping.

Hi Stuart, I had a few questions, and thought it best to ask here! How would you connect up multiple input channels 6s,1m - Sound Card (L/R), MT-32 (L/R), SC-55 (L/R), Microphone (Mono) into 2 outputs (Speakers/Headphones L/R, L/R channel to another PC? Would you run the Main-Out and Control Room Out outputs on the 1002FX into Speakers / Line-In on another PC? Are the input channels automatically mixed and copied to each output channel, or are there hardware limitations where you can't use Headphones out and Main-Out at the same time? Thanks!
@ReplayPCs
@ReplayPCs 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the mixer, but that's where a USB one may work out better for you. If you're wanting to record, or do anything like live streaming, then it's worth researching mixers recommended for podcasting and using something higher end with more flexible routing options (eg some of the ones from Mackie). For simple recording from one of these mixers though, yes you could use the control room outs - just beware of the output signal level and any gain being applied by the soundcard. On the lower end mixers like these, the control room out is the same signal as the main outs - with the 2-track / USB input usually being switchable.

Looking forward to your content. The era you're describing is very nostalgic for me as well - my first PC was a PS/2 model 70 running Windows 3.0. Technical content isn't the only thing I'm interested in seeing - I also enjoy hearing stories or learning about the historical context of various bits & bobs. That being said, I *do* recommend writing a script - or at least a detailed outline. I don't want you to lose your infectious enthusiasm - just focus it a bit :)

Welcome Stu. “More of the technical type videos without too much rambling.” Sounds good to me, bring it on. As a 90s PC music/sound nerd I’d be all for videos about audio production from this era and I reckon lots of others would be too. A well-structured series of deep-dives into this topic would be well received and could be a good kickstart for your view count. Playlists neatly curated by topic are appreciated nerd-folk and having this in place early on will get people intrigued and subscribing. Been following you on instagram for a couple of years and it’s always great to see your computers come up in the feed. You obviously put a lot of dedication into parts sourcing and it shows in your builds. And I gotta be honest, I wasn’t expecting guns like that on a retro PC builder🤝

Thanks... some of the old cases are heavy! :-) Great suggestions - maybe I will do something on how I used to do music production, although I'm not sure I've got enough to say for a series of videos. I could certainly talk a little about the available software, and the MIDI interface and soundcard I used back then. In these days of multi-channel USB interfaces & software synths, maybe some people would be interested hearing about pre-firewire times. You should like the next two videos I've got coming (doing the editing now) - on sound modules and mixers. 👍🎶 By necessity they will also be on the longer side, but after that I've got a few shorter tech tips to share.

Welcome to the tubes mate. Amazing first video and can't wait watch this channel grow. My first PC was an Amstrad PC2386DX/65 (yes all those numbers should be there, god bless Amstrad), then an IBM PS1 486SX, then a Pentium 100, which I upgraded myself to a 200MMX, shoved a banshee in it, and.....I wish I remember where it ended up. Last PC before moving from the UK to Perth was a Slot 1 Celeron I think, with a TNT2 in it, and it's still at my parents house in England today.
