That is good information.... thank you! I built a 12-foot-long pirogue in 2017 and seems that it is an ongoing project with something modified or added every year or two. It is flat bottom and draws only about 3 inches of water and does not track well and wind can really move it off course. So, I'm looking at ideas, such as your, trying to come up with a rudder to help tracking. I may design a side rudder, not sure. Again, thanks for this. It gives me something to consider.

give the long board a backbone and it will stiffen up. I just glued a piece of 1x1 along the longboard and works as a handle but also makes it ridgid. I have two longboard sanders - one flexible and the other ridged. Isocol spray is great for cleaning your hands after making a mess when gluing up

Hey buddy. I think you need to put wider handles on your longboard. That way you have 4 points of contact spread out equally. Should result in a better experience fairing! Cheers mate! Rick

First put the grill pad with your grill it won’t be a good choice, you want a good grade of indoor/outdoor carpeting then watch several KZbin videos on replacing trailer bunks and cleaning and repacking or replacing trailer bearings bearing buddies are a good idea but must be used correctly. Buy a bearing packer and use a marine grade of bearing grease if you want to do it yourself, if you have to pay someone to show you how to clean and check a bearing for reuse(that includes the bearing races in the hub). Evan with a new set of bearings will need packed before use and don’t forget the new grease seal for the hub ( it keeps dirt and water away from the large new inner bearing, the outside cap or bearing buddy does the same for the new smaller outer bearing). Both jobs are relatively simple and easy if you know how to do them.

Pick a marine grease for salt water that you like. I went with Luca Marine grease NLGI #2 (calcium sulfonate complex) since I can get it anywhere I am traveling. (Walmart) and its less expensive then other. Down side is I have not found it in tubs local. So I just scoop it our to the standard grease gun tubes. Keeping the same grease in a pump grease gun for the Bearing buddy's is a good Idea. Or just use the gun to squirt the grease into you gloved hand when packing the bearings.

I like the bigger new tires. Looks like you have bearing buddy's on at least one side. They are fancy covers with a Zerk (grease fitting) and spring. You should absolutely clean the bearing, races, inner seals and axel , inspect, and repack the wheel bearings! lots of videos showing how to do it.

Boy, I don't know what the KZbin security/algorithm is doing to my comments, but I posted a link to a guy replacing his trailer boards, known as "Bunks" or bunk boards in the boating world, and now it seems it's gone. At any rate, he had a decent idea of using basic 2x4's and painting them, then coating them in epoxy just like you've done on your boat. There are also adjustable "bunk brackets" that you might want to look into if the ones you have currently are not adequately height adjustable. That set of roller bumpers at the front of the trailer should be adjustable for height as well as length. You want most of the boat weight on the a els of course, but you also want enough tongue weight to prevent swaying while towing. I'm sure there's a mathematical way to determine exactly where your boats center of gravity is with the motor installed.

There are bunk slides (made of Teflon I believe?) that make sliding the boat on and off the trailer easier. They are loved and hated depending on who you ask. 😂 Do your research on that. A lot of the trailer add-ons/modifications you may want to do will depend greatly on how often you use it and how many miles you'll be traveling with it. Carpet type stuff is fine for occasional use.

😮 My comment on the axle hubs seems to have vanished, so I'll try it again, forgive me if this ends up being a double post.... You should find those axle caps locally. Most auto parts stores should have them. Just take the one remaining cap with you for size reference. Then you need to get marine axle grease and re-pack the bearings just to be safe. Think of it like changing the oil in your car. Depend on your usage, I'd repack/inspect them yearly. I do mine when I winterize my outboard, and just get it all done at once. (Outboard oil change and all) Re-packing the bearings isn't rocket surgery, anyone can do it. Just get some good laytex gloves, you probably have some left over from glassing the penga. Also, great job getting new/better tires! You won't regret that investment!

With my lack of tools and equipment, I'd raise the aft of the boat with a floor jack and some cribbage until it's level, then bring up the Bunks to meet the hull. Also make sure those bumper rollers in the front are adjusted for angle and height, as well as length. The boat needs to be balanced lengthwise on the trailer so that most of the weight is on the axles, but enough weight is on the tongue to keep the tongue on the ball. Last thing you want is too much weight on the tail end of the trailer.

is there any safety concerns for cutting fiberglass with bladed tools? I know it's not fiberglass insulation which is worse but just wondering if it's known whether bladed cutting does the same thing. Thanks!

Thats a classic SEA NYMPH 14R SHE RATED FOR 25 HP 2 STROKE. I OWN ONE. BEST RIDING TINNY YOU CAN FIND. Those are 8 inch tires. Too small.

There will be a weight rating on the actual tire. Look for it, and depending upon the age of the tire, reduce that by 1/3 😮

Yamaha is my vote! Honda outboards are very good, but from what I hear they don't keep parts available past 10 years or so (maybe someone will correct me on that). The Mercury motors in the the sizes you are looking for are probably made by Tohatsu and are good motors. Another manufacturer to consider is Suzuki.

Which engine to use has an incredible amount of variables. Lets start with new or used. Then, are you going to do the repair and maintenance yourself.

You sir have a fairing nightmare on your hands. Sanding through the fiberglass isn't ideal. I've tried pretty much every fairing product and absolutely love System3 Quikfair. It's not horribly expensive. Easy to mix. Easy to spread. Have a look at what I had myself into in my last few videos. Piling on more goop isn't the answer. You have to take a systematic approach to filling the lows and lightly sanding the highs till you get the two to meet. Sometimes with large defects this may take 3-4 rounds of fairing. You will work down to smaller and smaller devects till you can't see or feel them. Then, and only then, do you primer it. I spent over 2 months just doing my foredeck and forecabin. Keep going! We all make mistakes. It takes a big man to admit his mistakes. Cheers! Rick @mvshekon

Put a drop of primer in your pin holes not to much so it runs. Best to do after first coat when still wet

@13:36 got me thinking. Any chance one of your neighbors is a sheet rocker? You could do the mixing and they could do the spreading. That would be done in no time. I am going to keep this in mind when I build a boat. I seriously doubt that I could mix as fast as they can mud.

Interesting. How long does that epoxy take to start hardening? I build surfboards but use polyester resin and I only have about 15 minutes of working time. I was freaking out a bit at how much you were taking the time and also that you added that fairing compound to resin that was already hot.

I have found that BLP Mobile "MOTHANE polyurethame enamel" to be the best value on the market, the cost will be less than $100.00/gallon. I've used it to paint my boat seven years ago and it has held up exceptionally. I made some changes on the top cap a couple of years ago and tried to go back with Alexseal paint. Wound up sanding it all of and going back with the Mothane.

I'm going to use Rustoleum topside, which is cost effective but limited in color options, and Total Boat topside paint and add a Catalyst to both. I think the Catalyst helps make the paint harder and more durable. Another option is the two part paints like awlgrip but it's typically more expensive. Two tone is easier than you'd think. Pick a line and go for it. I went 4" above the chine on my drift boat and it looks great.
