The fantasy of Gripen E low cost vs Rafale ignores THE biggest cost which is scale. let me explain "scale": 1) ALL fighters cost $billions to develop & test in operations until they can be kept operation in wartime. 2) The worlds best aircraft sitting in a service bay is no threat to anyone, its a big hunk of metal & carbon fiber. 3) SCALE: Lets use big round numbers: Who do you think can build fighters for cheaper? Cowboy spends $10 billion to design & develop a fighter, & the labor & materials cost $2million each to build Skijump spends $5billion " " " $1million each Well you would say that obviously Skijump fighters can be made for cheaper because they developed them for half & can build them for half what Cowboy can. And you would be right except for design & development costs, if you didn't spend it you'd have a pile of metal & carbon fiber so each plane sold has to pay off some of the development costs. So the more planes sold, the smaller a portion of the development costs each airframe must cover. Do you want to see how much a difference it makes? If Cowboy can sell just 4x 4 times more planes, lets say 400 vs 100 for Skijump, then Cowboy: $10 billion / 400 = $25 million development costs per plane Skijump: $5 billion / 100 = $50 million development costs per plane. That's an EXTRA $25 million per plane, DOUBLE the cost Cowboy must charge per plane of development cost So who can build fighters for cheaper? Cowboy: $25million + $2million = $27 million each Skijump: $50million + $1million = $51 million each!! Yeah even though Skijump developed fighters for half & can build fighters for half of Cowboy, because of scale a buyer will have to pay DOUBLE the cost of Cowboy to buy an airframe! In fact its WORSE than that, production-scale also works the same way for the cost to buy spare parts or missiles for it!!! The US Air Force flies & buys more modern fighters that the entire rest of the worlds Air Forces COMBINED!!! Before you bring up Russia & China numbers, I said MODERN fighters!!! China's Air Force is littered with museum MiG-21 fighters & other 3rd gen that can't do much more than fly airshows & can be shot down with old World War 2 guns in museums. The US Navy is the worlds 2nd largest airforce after the US Air Force & their buying scale is INSANE!!! Just Lockheed-Martin F-16 has sold 6500 airframes in total, vs Gripen selling 287 airframes - that's not just a 4X scale, that's a 22X scale of planes to cover testing & development costs!!! F-16 is used by 18 major air-forces, air-frames & engines & missiles are all built under license all over the world by partners, to where despite NATO & Turkey having major falling outs where they had an unofficial weapons licensing embargo, Turkey has kept its F-16 fighters fully operational from full technology transfer -- although economies of scale come back here & Turkey has the worlds largest airforce of OBSOLETE F-16 airframes because Lockheed-Martin taught Turkey to build, operate, support, fix, make parts, F-16s at the time of contract in 1980s, but unlike NATO partners, Turkey has been unable to develop actual working upgrade kits for their F-16 fighters at anything approaching economical prices, much less upgrade packages that are easily serviceable like F-16V Block 72 Lockheed-Martin F-16 is the most successful (4th gen or better) fighter of all time with 6,500 sold & development & testing costs long ago paid for, 4,000 operational, & the Block 70/72 upgraded 4.5 gen F-16V now still selling as fast as they can be built to partners. The SECOND most successful (4th gen or better) fighter of all time is...the frigging 5th gen stealth F-35 with OVER 1,000 airframes operational & 4,600+ on order with a massive growing 10-year wait time!!!! F-16 sold its first in the late 1960s, F-35 only sold its first in 2007 Back to "cheap" Gripen, that's LIST price for a barebones plane & noone pays list price OR buys barebone. Gripen barebone is cheaper that F-16 barebone because it flies slower, carries less missiles, has much shorter range, & when at full loadout is MUCH less agile & slow than a loaded out F-16 Gripen parts are more expensive & have much longer wait-times to acquire, only Sweden & India now make the parts for Gripen which must land more often for fuel & rearming than F-16, if you can't get parts because the one factory making that special Gripen D part for 70 planes is down, you have a useless hunk of composite in a hangar. F-16 has multiple plants & parts depots around the world supplying parts. India would be smart at this point since they have French Rafale, to get ANY competing USA 4.5 gen fighter, either the Boeing F-15EX or Lockheed-Martin F-21, with it's own parts & service supply-chain, engines, parts, missiles -- France does not want to do a complete tech-transfer of Rafale, they have done alot but still need French-made parts. Lockheed-Martin & Boeing have both done full technology-transfers to where its truly independently built & supported even if politics go bad as with F-16 in Turkey vs USA. If France Dassault won't give India the tech-transfer levels wanted, India can then go to USA either Lockheed or its competitor Boeing for who will do the most tech-transfer. Then India will learn the engineering from the worlds 2 foremost fighter-jet nations for formidable operating fighters, India is in a VERY good position for it now with it's fight with China Commies making it the US ally where the enemy of my enemy is my friend & BOTH USA & India have stronger & stronger anti-Commie China sentiment which is worse than with Russia! As India moves from buying Russian equipment blowing up in Ukraine, India becomes a #1 ally to fight the common enemy China & bankrupt Russia, which is what drives US weap

Actually, the U.S. stopped Croatia's Israeli deal to buy F-16, so Croatia turned to EU manufacturers. Strange development, stopping the ally from buying modern aircraft, while at the same time sending them for free to non-Nato country Ukraine.

For 35 -40 years old F16 real value was 125 mil US$. That is like plane like plane. All additional equipment from Israel was not allowed to be in plane when was sold. So US put veto to Israelis to export such kind of plane, especially because those planes were donated to Israel from US. Most probably possible case of corruption in Croatian government. Because of this US stopped this trade.

The United Kingdom has not shared how it plans on developing and delivering new technologies tied to the sixth generation future fighter and associated system of systems known as the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) with Italian manufacturer and partner Leonardo, according to company CEO Roberto Cingolani. Led by Italy, Japan and the UK, GCAP is set to launch its “core platform” or next generation fighter plane development phase next year, but a frustrated Cingolani told reporters that he has still not seen “anything specifically as a capability from the UK” and suggested the roles of industry partners were not made “very clear” from a competence assessment, designed to define manufacturing responsibilities. He said work with partners must be “transparent” and “collaborative,” adding “it’s impossible to have a 20-year-long consortium with the idea that we don’t share the information.” For a start, the joint team “should make a serious competence assessment, and then I think there will be surprises,” he said during a press briefing last week to launch Leonardo’s 2024-2028 industrial plan.

1:35 Of the 40 odd Mig-21s that ended up in Croatia in the 90s, only 3 came from the ex-Yugoslavian air force through defections and all were lost in combat. The others were purchased from a foreign country, ether Ukraine or from Russia herself. Because of the UN arms embargo, the actual origin is still unknown but a few years back the Russian embassy in Croatia "leaked" a document which showed all the arms Russia supplies to Croatia during the 90s wars. The list was very extensive and included 40 Mig-21s as well as a very large number of weapons for the aircraft like bombs, unguided and guided rockets, and air to air missiles - (500 R60's for example). The reason Russia leaked this document was because at that time, Croatia was being pressured from the west to not allow Russia to take-over what was a trouble but strategically an important large Croatian company. The Russians were basically saying, come on, look how much we helped you guys in the 90's, you owe us one. lol This adds an extra interesting dynamic to the 90s regional story as Serbia, who was at war with Croatia at that time is usually seen as traditionally allied with Russia.
