Love that you use an acoustic to explain and teach these concepts and sounds. For me this really helps hear the ideas more clearly than if all were presented on electric. Thank you for these great lessons!
@LearnGuitarWithJimmyBrewerСағат бұрын
Thanks a lot, I’m really glad you picked up on that. I do that partly to keep things relaxed and informal, as if it’s a real, in person lesson. The other reason of course is that it makes the audio much easier to mix afterwards 😂 Thanks for watching 🎸

These triad lessons are teaching me a lot. This one helped me get my head around it more than the mixolidian one I think because lydian has such a distinct sound.

Really smart video Jimmy....I was there as a 20 year old in 1990, taking home Passion and Warfare and playing and playing it. But so much better than just a learn to play Steve Vai video, is the understanding you put in... Plus... we have learnt you have a cat! (If the reflection in one of your pictures was cat moving!)

Thanks a lot, I had quite a bit of fun making this one. That record connected with me profoundly and shaped my playing, even though what I do now is quite far away stylistically. It still amazes me now every time I listen to it. You’ve got some eagle eyes there! She would have been creating chaos climbing on my speakers and whatnot ordering me to hurry up and feed her, most likely!

Does the dim cover you for the II and V?
@LearnGuitarWithJimmyBrewer3 күн бұрын
In this example I’m essentially disregarding the idea of it being three different chords, and just condensing it down to tension and resolution - the diminished covering the tension and the triads covering the resolution. There are a million ways of approaching soloing over a ii-v-i, but I find this to be a useful place to start as it gets you some inherent jazz language from the very beginning. Keep me posted on how you get on, or if you’ve got any other questions 🎸🎸

Wow, I accidentally discovered this for myself after your last video when I was fooling around in Drop D. I don't make it sound as good as you yet, but it's been very inspiring and eye opening. Definitely a different mind set than thinking about scales.......tension.......release, or tension........tension.....tension.....release. Lots of fun.

@@LearnGuitarWithJimmyBrewer They are in theory butt 11th chords are not as straightforward to use as 7ths, 9ths and 13ths. I'd readily sub a 7th for a 9th or 13th, but would hesitate and really listen before subbing in an 11th...

Great dude! I'm still learning how to play a Jazz-Blues in Bb, so this is something I'm looking forward to getting stuck into! I'm finding connecting the phrases the hardest part. I have some really nice lines over Bb, but it's finding a nice phrase over Eb that 'works' with the first one. I'm spending a lot of time 'following my ears' which has been great fun & really fruitful

@KS-pj8rk21 күн бұрын
I was a bit useless over at coffee and didn't manage the note I'd intended so apologies II will leave It's a request for a supplementary internal-time lesson on sight-reading rhythms. I'm constantly over-checking myself which breaks the flow. In a previous lesson you were reading some of the more complex rhythms from the Bellson, Modern Reading Text in 4/4 with apparent ease. You recommend a rhythm site to me previously but I didn't get on with it. There's something about your teaching style that works for me, even with some of the more complex lessons, which is why it would be really something if you had an angle on it from your own studies.
@LearnGuitarWithJimmyBrewer20 күн бұрын
I do keep meaning to create something along those lines, feel free to drop me a message via my website and we can have a proper chat. I think it’s a skill that gradually improves over the long term.
