This record is one of my favorite Jolson records. Jolson does a great job with these songs and Guy Lomardo's orchestra nicely backs Jolson. The movie "Halleluja, I'm a Bum" is a Depression curiosity piece worth catching. The composers Rodgers and Hart did the music for the film when they temporarily left Broadway in the early 30's and went out to Hollywood to write for film. They didn't stay long preferring the Broadway musical stage.

I’m not trying to be one of those young people that says music sucks now, but as a 25 year old, let me just say, music sucks now compared to stuff like this. I mean we’ll never have this quality of music ever again.

Artie Shaw's cover of this song is great, but definitely not greater than Goodman's cover. They are different, showing different approaches. Artie emphasized effort and skill, but Benny seemed to emphasize talent, grace and flow. Just like the band leaders themselves, these renditions are so good, to the point I couldn't say which was better. Each brings different, yet valuable, qualities to music.

Typical product of the era; superb vocal, exquisite arrangement and a magnificent chordal structure. Jane puts this great number across with huge conviction. I’m in tears.
