The incest in the game makes sense because of the neglect and trauma they have been through together. If you had chosen not to trust Andrew with the parents, Ashley basically comes right out and says it. Not to mention, the developer received a lot of backlash because of that one questionable ending. It should also be noted that the coffin of Andy and Leyley is a horror game, and the themes of horror are supposed to explore disturbing things such as incest.

Also for clarification, the route you did in this playthrough, where Andrew begins to resent Ashley, is the Decay route, the Burial route is the one you played through the first time, where Andrew "chooses Ashley" in every sense of the phrase.
@roberts90952 күн бұрын
On the topic of the lemon muffins, you will notice that in the Burial route, when you paint over the "Parents" mural, it shows an illustration of Andrew and one of those muffins. They become symbolic of how Andrew was a parental figure to Ashley during their childhood and serves to help flesh out the unhealthy dynamic the two have developed and the flashback provides context to how it became. There's definitely a hint of Freudian psychology when looking at the relationship between Andrew and Ashley in Burial.
@DandyDNA2 күн бұрын
32:02 This scene is so much sadder if you have spare bullets...Andrew, knowing Ashley is armed, actually gives her some time to test her loyalty, and the player gets a choice: shoot Andrew, or let him kill you. If you let him kill you, you get an oddly tender image of Andrew caressing her face and blowing a kiss before he proceeds with his 'romantic' murder-suicide. (And of course, if you choose to shoot, Ashley blows his brains out!) Having bullets means Ashley has the choice to surrender, to submit to him, to indisputably choose him even in death, which he rewards with one last act of gentleness; if she has no bullets, then she lacks the choice to submit and validate his control, making the killing unromantic and inelegant. It's one of many things showing how Andrew is 10000x more possessive than Ashley could ever be-he's usually very good at masking, but truthfully I see him as the real manipulator of the two as he's engineered Ashley into being the perfect problem child, giving him an excuse to act on his guilty pleasures while convincing others (and indeed himself) they're not even his pleasures in the first place. Andrew's entire conflict comes from being a hypocrite covering his arse by any means possible, so I see the Burial (happier, so far) and Decay (sadder, so far) routes as two different versions of Andrew's fantasy of normalcy crumbling. In Burial, Andrew accepts he's messed up, he's having a great time because he doesn't even see his effect on Ashley as a problem; she's his badass partner in crime who eats human soup. In Decay, Andrew can no longer convince himself he is a victim, and this greatly depresses him-Ashley becomes the punishment he created and deserves. 38:37 Saying "Never say never" in the Burial route gives you a very sappy ending on the bridge with lots of new artwork! This was such a great playthrough, there's so much stuff attention to detail in Coffin that you even found dialogue I'd never seen before! Which game are you gonna check out next?

Ashley is distraught over Andrew's cold collectedness because she fears that she is losing her grip on control over him, but the thing is, she also is beginning to realize that she doesn't need to manipulate and coerce him to get the affection she desires because Andrew loves her unconditionally. This route is called Burial, and it follows Andrew and Ashley growing more fond of each other and accepting their new dynamic with one another. The alternate route where you choose not to trust Andrew is Decay, this route explores a scenario where Andrew becomes more detached and resentful towards Ashley for ruining his life.
@DandyDNA7 күн бұрын
I don't think Decaydrew resents Ashley for ruining his life, but for being his handcrafted failure-he ruined his own life by ruining her. Burialdrew on the other hand is having a good time because he doesn't even see the problem and sees Ashley as his partner-in-crime.
@roberts909516 сағат бұрын
@ I'm not too sure about that. Andrew is definitely VERY possessive of Ashley, but I don't really think there's sufficient evidence that he is the one manipulating Ashley. Yes, he served as a quasi parental figure for her, but I don't really think that's enough to conclude that he intentionally molded her into the perfect excuse for his problems. He was a child at the time too, and one could just as easily conclude that if Andrew's "parenting" had any impact on Ashley being the way that she is, it was the fact that he too was a child and had no idea how to be a parent, rather than actual malicious intent. We see in their childhood flashbacks that Andrew is generally well-intentioned towards Ashley and is trying to be a good older brother. The only instance where he acts deceptively towards Ashley during their childhood is the Blood Oath, where he words his promise carefully so as to allow himself to still have other people in his life.
@DandyDNA2 сағат бұрын
@ I agree that Andrew hasn't INTENTIONALLY manipulated Ashley, but that's only because he's a hypocrite acting on impulse-Andrew is allergic to accountability, which has prevented him from taking any actions that could have helped Ashley grow. He doesn't do it on purpose mind you, but in pursuit of covering his own arse he's fully enabled Ashley's worst tendencies and allowed her to become the villain his victim complex needs.
@karliskokorevics69027 күн бұрын
Loved watching your playthough! So... the "never say never" option actually leads to a more detailed unhinged bittersweet ending. And honestly, that's what Ashley would say XD Anyway, the important bit is that there are two main routes in the game - "Burial" route (which is the one you got) which has the "insane" ("never say never") and "sane" subvariation (picking the right door/saying "never") and "Decay" route which is based on the other choices in the basement and has it's own choices at the end based on another decision you made at the beginning of Ep2. Burial and Decay apparently will have completely separate variations of Episode 4. However, the Episode 4 currently in development is for "Decay" (which itself could get split in two parts due to how long it's going to be). So, it might make sense to hold off another playthrough until Episode 4 of "Decay" gets released.

Also this was one of the questions asked by the developer Q: Does Ashley and/or Andrew have [cluster B type personality disorder]? A: Shoehorning the characters into real-life diagnoses would only serve to diminish the narrative, and cause contradictions in the way their symptoms would or wouldn't manifest. Rather than seeing their behavior through the lens of this or that affliction, it's more fruitful to analyze the cause and effect of in-universe events. I kind of agree with the answer here because I feel like trying to diagnose the characters takes away from the complexity of the characters themselves.

Chaptor 2 : -the vending machine but you know this one -When you try to climb up trough the window of their parents house without the stick you have a sus dialogue between the two . -When you bury Nina you can talk to Ashley and see that she didn't care at all . -You can make Ashley stay at the house to go Burial route but i think you already know that . -if you cut the dad to get blood for the ritual the mom get angry . -(MAJOR ELEMENT)The gift in Ashley dream give access to a very good scene where you understand more in deep their "codepency". -(MAJOR ELEMENT) if Andrew stay at the house when Ashley go take the money you can take the "Olive Branch" and have a secret end -Choosing 'Never Say Never' after Ashley vision , would have given you a different scene on the bridge between Andrew and Ashley where you understand the reasons behind Ashley actions (she is not the incestuous one (We see you Andrew....) but she gonna do what she gonna do to keep Andrew close) . -(MAJOR ELEMENT)In Decay dream you have two end to the dream and you can't access one if you take the option "SHOOT!!!" with the hitman so be aware of that not to be softlocked and save before the dream to see the two (if you choose "SHOOT!!!" and still try to shoot there’s an small extra art but it's still end like the first choice) . tell me if i missed something guys but i think this is all , Oh and Also big news maybe we will have chapter 3 of Decay sooner if the community decide it !

One of the subtle bits of character building between Andrew and Julia is where Andrew asks her to tie her hair up, it's implied that he is doing this because he wants Julia to look more like Ashley. There's also an Episode 3 preview video by Kit9 that implies that Andrew only got with Julia in the first place to stave off rumors circulating through his school about him having an incestuous relationship with Ashley. The narrative here is one that seems to indicate that Andrew was essentially using Julia as a surrogate for his sister because he knew it would be too taboo to act on his "inclinations" towards her. This is further supported by the voicemails we hear in the dream, we have to remember that this occurs in Andrew's dream, so it's somewhat ambiguous as to whether he *actually* overheard Ashley say any of that, or if his subconscious fabricated all of it because he wants to believe that Ashley has sexual inclinations towards him.
