Such iconic beautiful S Line. Odd I once applied to work for Collins, failed, but couple years later working at NASA tracking station working on Collins tracking and timing equipment. Mid 70s.

As a kid, I loved getting such radios to play with, and I was usually able to get them working again, if they were mostly complete.

I used that terminal and the MSC-64 in the mid 1980s when I was stationed in Eastern Turkey. I would like to get a hold of one of those terminals myself.

Be aware that many of these sets are provided with radium-containing paint for the glow in the dark lettering on the front panels and are therefore still radioactive.

I have one in my 1951 (restored) M38. Back in the mid 60s, I was a new ham and a member of Army MARS. One day I came home to find multiple large crates in the back drive delivered from Ft. Sheridan; a complete GRC-9 station with power supplies, generator, radios, canvas bags, and antennas, packed for deck shipping. After several hours, I had the basic radio assembled in the basement, powered by 2 spare car batteries and the vibrator PS, and connected to our random length end fed antenna. Using the leg key, I made several CW contacts, the furthest being Wyoming from suburban Chicago. Much, much later I found the M38 and reacquired a GRC-9 system with the correct mount. Great fun!

Well, it looks like you did a real FB job on that, so hats off to you! 😊 I would really love to own one of those, and in the past tried to get one, up until I learned that it did not have 40 or 80 m! I’ve seen the sunspot cycle so bad, that it would turn into a one band radio for sure. I have never understood why Collins would not have included 40 or 80 m.

Nice job Ray. Looking at the capacitors it looked like you also replaced what appear to be two "postage stamp" mica capacitors. How did you determine they had to be replaced? Mike N2MS
@rafantini82 ай бұрын
Its not apparent in the video but there was also a problem with low sensitivity due to one of those capacitors being open. Replaced both in the first IF instead of trying to determine which one was at fault.

I haven't seen a 129 in over thirty years. I maintained the unit at SAC HQ Command Post in 1989-91. Nice piece of gear. You could also transmit the alphabet phonetically via the keyboard. Great looking setup you have.
