As a member of the CBC Youth Choir in the late 1950s we spent quite a while learning this intricate music by Benjamin Britten. I went off to England to go to University and don’t know if it was ever performed on TV! It’s a treat for me to hear it in its entirety. Thank you!

Dreadful operatic sounding soprano. Would be much better with less vibrato. Needs an orchestra to do it justice.

I sang this with a chorus in Portland, Oregon, and loved it. I later used it in my wedding. Today is our fortieth anniversary, so I wanted to hear it again.

O, Sabbath rest of Galilee! O, calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee, the silence of eternity Interpreted by love. Drop Thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease: Take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess, the beauty of thy peace.

I sang this piece in the Bruges Cathedral with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir in the summer of 1972. Instead of the flute obligato, Ron Romm and Fred Mills of the Canadian Brass played a trumpet duet obligato introduction. Being close to Flanders, the audience was well aware of the Canadian connection of the poet John McCrae. Although the audience had applauded previous pieces we had performed, there was a reverential silence that followed our performance. This was one of the most memorable events of my 25-year career with the TMC. The chorister's eyes filled with tears and we had difficulty presenting the next piece on the program because we couldn't read our musical scores.

How sad that there hasn't been any comments. Well, let me be the first. I was introduced to the music of William Billings when my high school choir I was in sang Shiloh. Still is one of my favorites. This song was very well done. I'm not a professional musician at all. But I do enjoy good music when I hear it. I heard it here. Thank you for putting it here.

In 1961, while as a member of the CBC Youth Choir under renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler, we were learning the Dances from Gloriana. I had to leave the choir to go to University in England and never got to perform them! I have waited all these years to hear them and I am far from disappointed. Well done!

Yes, the best version and 1 of only 2 I know of in which the bell change ringing section is accurate. It is based on the bells which would have been rung at Norwich Cathedral circa 1600. I happen to have been brought up in a bell making town. Another point which might interest you (you probably know it) -- when Stravinsky was gradually recording his works for CBS he insisted upon using the CBC vocalists for his Mass, Cantata and several other works. He apparently liked the icicle sound which reminded him of vocalists when he was a child in Russia.
