It's a harmonic arrangement for one of the voices. Don't be that judgemental.

Normally referred to as a descant- it enables people in a choir to sing something other than the main (well known) tune, and also to create/enrich the harmonies.

Hi Rob. In classical solo piano music you will discover the need for hand crossing fairly often, so in this book theyve introduced it very early. Kids can (not always) respond positively to the novelty of it: some not! It also gets the hands moving around the keyboard; this is essential from around grade 0.5 and higher, esp for solo classical piano.
