Hey guys...here I am in 2025, bingeing your podcast from the beginning. I have given up all of my political podcasts, and I had been desperately looking for replacements. You guys came along with your 300+ episodes and saved the day! ❤

Classic Doctor Who is the real stuff. My 5th Dr icon to the left here was troubled by Mr Valentine Dyall indeed. I"d go on vacation with Mercedes McCambridge even like 1982 CBSRMT Mercedes McCambridge. Can't wait for Quiet Please next time.

There were eps on sale in the 1970s/80s in the local Supermarket, like next to bics and bubblegum at the cashier ???..... MIND BLOWN. Honestly thought they'd only be seen on sale in like small ads on page 63 of you know Starlog #5 or the fifteenth Sunday newspaper supplement which might have been an underwear catalog which you never got time to open.

For its era in time this radio show churned out entertaining episodes. Its unfortunate these episodes didn't transform into a teleplay tv series. The Demon Tree would look great on film and it'd be interesting to see the eerie special effects of today if this was a tv episode. TMORLS, I enjoyed listening to your cantankerous review of The Demon Tree, akin to Riff Trax movie reviews.
@tcripples24 күн бұрын
Great show. Mercedes McCambridge had such a sweet voice, but she was also the voice of the demon in the original movie The Exorcist (1973).

Fun ep. I can't hear that creaaaaaaking door without hearing the CBSRMT creaking door. Clearly Himan Brown wanted to keep it in work so it could make it's health insurance. It needed regular oil every day and a new hinge replacement I think.

@LaoZ Been listening to the MORLS crew for several years now, so I've already heard the original Inner Sanctum radio show episode this TV show was based on. Cool to finally put some faces to the voices on the podcast, which I like---they crack me up while giving some good incisive reviews of these old-time radio shows, which I have fun listening to. The Inner Sanctum episodes are on Tubi, where a number of old early forgotten TV shows are.

There aren't any bats in the original story. And presumably the vampire is trying to avoid too much interest in the location of their grave.

Though I far prefer "Quiet Please" to "Lights Out", even though it's an unfair comparison as the latter's famed original run does not exist, I think "The Coffin on Studio B" is far better as a pence of drama, has better apprehension towards the finale and all of its meta elements land beautifully. I will say that while Coffin is an example of a far better than average "Lights Out" ep that "A Night to Forget" is simply just another ep of "Quiet Please", such is the quality of the latter.
@ryancoulter4797Ай бұрын
My hometown library in the 80s had a cassette tape of the Lights out episode ‘inside out’ about the fog that turns you inside out, parodied famously by The Simpsons. I’ve since heard that’s supposedly one of the lost episodes.
@BernardJKDАй бұрын
This ep is endlessly fascinating. If there's one thing I like about the Lights Out revival in the mid 1940s is that we get Wyllis Cooper material remade. Ok I love a bit of Oboler madness but Cooper's dramatic depth and narrative sleight of hand are to me far more rewarding.
@BernardJKDАй бұрын
I do think the pay off at the very end is basic 1930s story telling therefore it's roots are showing. However I'm very glad Oboler didnt try to modernise the script to compete say with the likes of a 1946 more complex Suspense ep with a shock reveal ending.

I agree that the individual story telling components used elevate it but yes the full story is middling. I might dig this hitherto unknown series out and see what remains.

This one failed to capture the "tone" that I think the tale needs. The performances lacked nuance, and the delivery too matter-of-fact to be mysterious in any way.

Great ep of your show and indeed this Nightfall ep. Just three eps later they try to repeat the trick in an ep called Teddy. However Gerald is the far superior ep. That we get 20+ minutes in before Nightfall drops the ball is a miracle. At least they chose 1 ending and not fluff it. Love the Chocky TV series which I own on DVD. Shamefully I haven't read the book.

OMG, this is dreadful. I mean dreadfully bad. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE old radio programs and old radio broadcasts but this one just doesn't do it for me. "The Cat Wife" was included on an old set of LPs called "The Golden Age of Radio", hosted by Jack Benny, which my father used to own. As a child and young teen I loved listening to the collection as a whole but even back then (60 years ago) I thought "The Cat Wife" was awful. When I found it here on You Tube I thought, "Let me try it again for old time sake." Well, I did and my opinion hasn't changed. While I have great respect for classic radio and the audiences of the time, I just couldn't understand and STILL don't understand how anyone could have found this story to be anything but silly. That's no fault of Boris Karloff or any of the cast but it's such a dumb story, in my humble opinion, and I'm a person who loves classic horror. It's on a par with the worst of the worst of 1950s low budget horror or sci-fi films. Oh well, to each his own. Apparently this remains popular in the archives of classic radio so I'm in the minority of those with a negative opinion.

I love Dick Powell, but if he had been JD it would have been a very different show.. Bob Bailey will always be JD to me. Subscribed.
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
Again with the inevitable odious comparison to Bob Bailey. Like this ep is even remade in ep number 4 starring Charles Russell. There's your direct comparison sitting on a plate waiting for you. There is 6 years of Dollar ahead before Bailey Dollar is even a thing. Powell isn't even Gorge Lazanby. Heck Powell isn't even George Lazanby's stunt double.
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
I was going to use Bob Holness' James Bond in my example but thought you wouldn't know of the radio version of Bond. Only after I sadly used George Lazanby, who I actually like a lot as Bond, did I remember that this is an OTR pod so you would instantly have got a Bob Holness as Bond reference. Ah well l'esprit D'escalier indeed.
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
I just don't see what you gained by doing a "what if Dick Powell played the role" pod when ye have not listened to the first 3 Johnny Dollars. Powell is only briefly interesting as a contrast to the real first Johnny Dollar namely Charles Russell. As Powell only did this 1 unaired audition ep he is really of zero interest to the YTJD saga overall. Can't you review y'know the actual eps and actors for your own benefit not mine?
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
OMG wait till you get to the "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" pilot if you thought I was being pernickety here. Ok at least you are doing the "Milford Brooks III" which is actually not a "debut" but the first of two non-broacast pilots. Saying that I might verge on the cranky if one of you praises Dick Powell over Charles Russell just quietly. I can already tell which one of you will definitely state that (very loose) opinion,
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
In some of the early Chucky comics he gets a bus wearing a trench coat. So dumb. These comics have thankfully been de-canonised by the later films.
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
I think you maybe made a needless mistake by doing the pilot ep "Dead Of Night" (24-Mar-47) because the pre-pilot version of "Dead of Night" (28-Feb-47) is far, far better and so much scarier. The one you listened to is only interesting for the differences between the two episodes. Why would you not listen to the good one guys?
@BernardJKD3 ай бұрын
ie the pre-pilot hasn't been "softened" as yer man says about the USA release of the prior namesake movie. Do yerselves a favour and go listen to that pre-pilot.!
