I've been living in Whittier for 5 years and we LOVE it. No place is perfect, but East Whittier is such a great community. The schools are GREAT (Go Leopards!) Beautiful tree lined streets, I just wish we had more shopping here. But Brea is only 15 mins away.

“No longer America”, can you elaborate? Considering America is a melting pot of different cultures, it is very likely that Downey residents would come from a variety of backgrounds. That being said, unless you can pull demographics on place of birth, it’s not accurate to say “america is extinct in Downey”. I’d also like to point out that these diverse races as a whole, still do not over power the majority groups which are Caucasian and non-Hispanic Caucasian. I know exactly what your statement means and it’s upsetting that you’re hanging on to a false sense of what this country was built on. If your cultural insecurities cloud your judgement, just say that.

Downey also caters to the Mexican culture (as do a lot of LA cities). Downey is a blue collar city. The city tends to attract transplants from neighboring cities like South Gate, Bell, Norwalk. The crime rate is not as high as it's fellow neighbors but still requires precaution in the evening. Overall, not the best city to live in but you can do worse.

Loved seeing this... My childhood home is on 8th St right down from Furman Park on Rives. We haven't lived there since the 1980s, but my mom and dad were in the first graduating class of Warren HS in 1959. I then went to Warren myself but we moved before my senior year and I graduated from Neff Sr. High in La Mirada instead. Downey was the best place to grow. It has changed as all places do, but there are so many people there who still appreciate all its charm and work hard to preserve it. Good Luck!!

The biggest con is that it’s full of foreigners in all areas so if you are American you probably will not like to live here. The only good thing about it is the historical landmarks that remain from when Americans used to be a part of it.

Been in the south side of Downey for a few decades. Home was burglarized twice in 30 years but overall, it's been a safe area compared to other places. Knock on wood ....we never get burglarized again.

Lived in Downey-Paramount area in the '60-70s and it was a great place to grow up. Left in 1980, generally, SOCAL is a great place to be FROM.

Downey library you can park and walk to Portos bakery and local movies and bars. Exercise can be done and you have theatre. We have Downey promenade I surf I use 605 free way seal beach and HB pier and 105 fwy. You can surf Porto’s and Manhattan beach. You have los angels next door. You can use metro system. If, you exercise you have it made.. we also have 24 hr fitness .. Downey Library.

Not sure why you would list crime as a pro. Definately a con. Your crime score is 25, which means it's safer than 25% of the US. OR, 75% more dangerous. I would like at least a 50% where ever I live. Perhaps you have a real-estate bias.

Totally agree with that. Look who are becoming realtors these days (all over the nation)...ditzy, slutty types like her. Downey is mostly Hispanic/Latino (so a "middle" area). About 2/3 of that, and the other 1/3 is white. This would be like my Berwyn, Summit, Melrose Park, Posen, Blue Island (ethnic makeup), around Chicago. Nicer weather/architecture (less haunting, pre-WWII stuff).
