That tree on the 4th, is not really in the way, if you have a good swing. Based on your iron, you should be able to fly it over the tree and land on the greens. Those that duffs their irons, can't use a 9-W properly, will hit the tree and complain about the design. For the rest of us that uses wedges to easily get on, the tree is simply an object of simple beauty that goes with the hole.

Keller is my favorite course. I'm happy they kept that huge Oak in front of the 4th green when they remodeled the course several years ago. On most other courses, a tree like that in front of the green would be obnoxious. But since Keller is an old course with a wonderful golf legacy, to have taken that tree out would've been wrong.

Well deserved course for a video. Played it late 2022 season and it was a blast and tough. Definitely broke down my par 3 course expectation of being an easy round. Something I found fun as well was actually driving the golf cart on the paths. With the elevation and the gravel. It felt like I was golfing and getting around in a side-by-side vehicle. Extremely fun course and everything you mentioned down to the club house being, "everything you need and nothing that you don't" really nailed it on the head.

Never understood the love for this course The last two holes are awful and if you take a cart you get stuck in spots no wear near your ball Plus you have to love a 460 hard hole that you have to lay up on off the tee
@agoodwalkspoiledgolf
@agoodwalkspoiledgolf 4 ай бұрын
Not going to disagree with you on any of those. The last two holes are a tragedy. In my opinion, the driving range should be where 17 and 18 are and all 18 holes should be across the road. I have no information on this, my assumption is the owner wanted a scenic 18 of the giant backfilled quarry. Again, no information but that’s the only thing that makes sense to me

I played Keller on nearly ever Sunday morning from 1991 to 1993 and then again from 1996 to 2001 - we had a standing 5:56 (or so) tee time. I played there consistently with Ron Sattler (RIP) and a couple of other players who were lucky enough to join us :). I loved ever minute I spent there. I even lived on and was a member of Edinburgh USA towards the end of that timeframe - I played Keller more than Edinburgh every year. I thought that the 9's were reversed now and I know they have extended the course. It's so good to see the tree on the 4th is still there (this video makes it look like the order of the holes is the same). The tree has grown a ton, but it still was tough back then. I don't live in MN anymore and it's likely I'll never play Keller again - but my memories are clear. I still remember pushing many a drive into the right bunker on #1 on a dewy morning. Thanks for posting!

Very well made video and cool that you got so many interviews for it. I think the courses he's worked on that I've played are Bunker Hills (the 3rd nine which I assume was mostly what is now the North? not sure), Links at Northfork, St Croix National, and Rum River Hills. Which is nuts that all those courses are made by the same guy: Bunker is a very traditional parkland layout used for big tournaments, Northfork is more linksy in its inspiration, St Croix National has the craziest elevation changes in the region, and Rum River is one of those more affordable community-type courses you mentioned routed between lots of ponds. A testament to his versatility.

Yeah I'd say The Quarry is the best public course in the state. Only course that I've played in MN that I think is better is White Bear Yacht Club. But we've got a lot of high quality private courses that aren't easy to get on for most people so maybe a more broadly experienced golfer would be able to give an educated placement of The Quarry among them. Giant's Ridge is great value for the money too compared to other states' top public courses. Then in the cities there's Keller which is not only the best value in the metro but may be the best public course in the metro full stop. Certainly better than Rush Creek or Edinburgh, in my opinion. Haven't played StoneRidge which is often cited as the best public course in the metro so I can't speak on that.

Played there today, and it was in great shape. As the video states there's usually ample space off of the tee boxes but don't let that lull you into a false security. The clubhouse is like going back in time. In fact you almost feel like the ghosts of past members must haunt this place in a way that would make you smile, because they only have good memories. Also I have to mention the tenth tee box. If you're not familiar there's a lane that runs through it where cars drive through it at any given time. I know it gave me a start when I was just about to tee off when I looked down the fairway for a second time and there was a car, and then a second. It's a must play course. Have fun!

Somehow stumbled across your channel, and don't regret it! Great video exploring one of my natural golfing nemesis, trees! Agree with you that it's provocative, and does provide a different element to consider when planning how you want to navigate around the course, but also feel that if unchecked/unmaintained could actually hinder and get in the way of a golf hole being good, and actually end up being unfair - especially to the less skilled. Looking at the example of the fourth hole you raised, if that tree were to continue to grow to a height where most players couldn't go over the green, (me being limited with my lack of arborist technical knowledge, maybe it has reached maximum height), would that hole be as exhilarating as it were as playing today? Either way, love you videos team!

Glad you found us and glad you enjoyed the video! - it’s one we are proud of. For sure agree. There is a happy medium to strike here with the trees.
