Is the size shrinkable? Like reduce the size by 50%
@JonS5 ай бұрын
This is a 150% scale print. I printed smaller versions first, but I can’t remember how small I went (maybe 2/3rd scale?). If you go too small the feet adhesion may be the first thing to fail (unless you use a good bed adhesive or a brim/mouse ears).

I have a question, my articulated dragons always have their joints fused together so they can’t move How do I fix that?
@JonS8 ай бұрын
Could be caused by elephants foot (over-squeezing of the first layer). A lot of modern slicers have elephants foot compensation options. Or you could try the old-fashioned approach of better dialing in of your first layer offset and flow. It might also be over-extrusion for all the other layers. The simplest fix is to apply an x/y compensation in the slicer which pulls in the outer perimeter slightly. Which slicer are you using?

Hello! Beautiful dragon! I have been thinking aobut getting into 3d printing myself and was curious what kind of 3D printer this is!
@JonS10 ай бұрын
This is a Craftbot Flow IDEX. It's a commercial printer. If you're interested in getting in to 3D printing there are a lot of great options in 2024 at reasonable price points (of course, "reasonable" depends on your budget). You should start with asking what do you want to do with the printer? That will inform you what materials you want to print with (PLA, PETG and TPU can be printed on an open printer; ABS, ASA, and nylon really need an enclosed chamber printer. It will also inform you of what build volume you need.

Did you need supports for this?
@JonS10 ай бұрын
No supports are needed for this model. I doesn’t even need infill so long as you have sufficient perimeters.

That's a beautiful dragon. Be awesome if it was done in metal (gold, silver, copper, steel?)
@JonS Жыл бұрын
That might be possible with the high metal-content filaments (like Virtual Foundry) that print a "green" part that you then debind and sinter in a kiln. Difficult to do with different melting-point metals though. Even if a single metal, getting a flexi model like this to work after the shrinkage could be hard.

.6 with a .4 nozzle I see that you said your printing slow at 40mm does that help with the extra amount of plastic your trying to push out the nozzle? my first dragon came out like shit and my Benchy / Cali dragon using the same settings came out good. I did a .42 width with a .4 nozzle and I am running .28 Layer height I do print fast 80mm but I really didn't think my settings would come out as bad as it did.
@JonS Жыл бұрын
The printer has Volcano-like nozzles so has plenty of flow, but I find it hard to get a very shiny finish if I print silks faster. I've printed silk filaments at up to 400mm/s on my V-Minion, but I've not managed to get it as shiny as here. Generally, printing slow means shinier, even for non-silk filaments. You can see this when printing fast Benchies where the shininess changes at different z heights due to the printer slowing down when there's a minimum layer time set.

Did you set a max flow in your slicer? 15mm³/sec
@JonS Жыл бұрын
SuperSlicer has a max. volumetric flow field. I've not properly tested to see what the max flow is. It should be more than 15mm^3/s with the CHT nozzle I'm using.

How do you print multi color things like that?
@JonS2 жыл бұрын
Rainbow filament. It slowly changes color throughout the spool.
How did you end up with what looks like perfect layer color balance? I assume the filament changes color at various places.. its like whatever filament you chose worked perfectly for this print.
@JonS Жыл бұрын
@@deadline8416 yes, I printed large and chose the number of perimeters to get a good transition distance in z. I did also play with using the infill density to get a good transition. This model doesn't even need infill to print. Some later ones I did, I turned off infill and added a perimeter (for child proofing).

It doesn’t need one so long s as you have good bed adhesion (it does suck if a foot comes loose near the end of a print). It’s worth noting this model also doesn’t require any infill either.
