I was not attractive growing up. I was skinny, awkward, hit puberty way too young and felt pressure to hide it with unflattering clothes, unflattering glasses, and I had those really big 90s kid head gear braces. I was called an alien my whole childhood. Now I wouldn’t say I’m attractive. I would say I’m average. But I don’t have people attacking my looks now. I am treated much better. I have a pretty extreme alternative style, in a time that it’s sexualized (though I started before), and I would say a lot of people mistake ‘wearing make up’ and ‘looking interesting’ as ‘hot.’ When I was a kid, I was quiet, and still am around people I don’t know. If you are quiet, people make up shit about you. It was all bad as a child. Now it’s all things like, I’ve lived all over the world (I have lived all over the states, but not the world), or they think I must be some creative genius. When I was a teenager, I was a ‘future school shooter.’ I get that people want to believe people are just really nice, but they really aren’t. I have my former bullies messaging me and trying to ad me on social media now, like nothing happened, because ‘Omg you nail the goth aesthetic! How have you been? Why didn’t you go to the high school reunion?’ I just flat out tell them that the last time I saw them, I was afraid to go to school, and drop it. As for ‘hot murderers,’ I learned what Ted Bundy did long before I saw him, because my aunt was almost one of his victims. He met her. She was at the law school in Fl where he would look for victims. She turned him down. Thank god for that. But she was adamant about teaching me to be safe and while she spared details of the murders, I knew he was a bad person, and people died because of him, and the world is full of people who are ugly inside. So when I later learned about him in a criminal justice class back in high school, I didn’t think he was attractive. He may have the features people find attractive but he is not attractive to me. Some of my bullies were technically attractive, but I can’t see them that way because I know what kind of person they were, and likely still are, considering they can’t apologize and some have been flat out offended I have no interest in being cool with them now. I’ve also met attractive people who would say or do something about others and I just couldn’t be around them, even if they were nice to me. I don’t comment on looks, unless I know the person. Then it’s things like ‘you are big ugly to me. I love how you look’ or ‘you look so nice today’ or ‘most of being attractive is how you present yourself and you have a great style, so don’t worry. Most people will think you are beautiful, too.’ Like I said. I would say I’m average outside of my make up and ‘going out’ clothes, like most people. Even most celebrities look average in their hoodies, leggings, messy buns, and no make up, and there is nothing wrong with that. This is why I encourage people to find a style that stands out, and playing with it until you get the response you want. I don’t do ‘aesthetics’ because I don’t need everyone and everything around me to be perfect or match what I’m wearing, but my style has helped me. As a teenager I said ‘if I can’t be pretty, I can still be interesting,’ and it helped me long before the braces came off and people started appreciating my unusual style. This was long before alt girls were fetishized. This was long before I discovered how to dress my body, but at least if they didn’t like it, I was in control, and I knew that was someone I would not really want as a friend.
