Thanks for posting your thoughts. I think essentially I have the same attitude towards learning / teaching music. Although I must say that I'm neither a good musician (in terms of perfomance skills and virtuosity) nor can I ever be a teacher. I was raised in a household where music/art was not appreciated at all. But I felt always intensely attracted to music. So I began as a child to teach myself by "exploring" objects which produce sound. Not knowing anything about standard (western) notation I even developed my own way to jot down rythms and melodies to better memorize and reproduce rythms and melodies which I enjoyed during my improvisations. This led to a very deep relation / love with music. But it also caused a new problem: Growing up I tried several approaches to "correctly" learn music through attending music classes and workshops. But I always failed. It seems that I don't have the ability to pick up (at least quickly) when teachers present a certain musical skill or concept. I always have to "explore" everything myself. Sometimes I even have the feeling that I need "to invent myself" any aspect of music before I can learn/adapt to it. The latter may sound romantic and when I play my "own" music I cannot feel any closer to my soul and to the "music as an expression of the eternal spiritual universe". But the lack of beeing rooted in the cultural way music is taught and percieved makes me sort of a "hermit". As most other musicians learned music the traditional way (either with music lessons or by watching and imitating other musicians) they share the same "conversation space". And I now do miss that skill / background because I also would like to be part of the "musician-family".

I'm lucky in that I have both my own approach which I teach and through intense exposure to the conventional approach, I can get them to talk to each other. Ultimately, I do think we have to discover things for ourselves although in reality, there is always a response to the culture in which we grow up. Good luck with your continued exploration!

As a piano teacher myself I’ve struggled for years with how to enable my students to move beyond reproducing the music on the page. This video was very comforting to think that ‘I’m not alone’. I, too, rebelled from formal lessons and took up guitar instead which I played in bands and with singers and it gave me a great outlet for expression. Eventually I returned to the piano with a very different approach. But it took me years to break through my own blockages around ‘getting it right’ etc. etc. You’ve communicated this very nicely, thanks.

I believe any music you want to play can make you fluent in what you enjoy playing,
@PhilBestMusic8 күн бұрын
When I talk of fluency in the language of music, I'm referring to the ability to "say" music to express yourself accurately and spontaneously without any need for rehearsing practice, and also the ability to grasp rhythmic and tonal vocabulary accurately as you hear it, so it can be reproduced. Obviously, you mean something else. Most musicians are not fluent in the way I mean, even very accomplished ones. And of course, there's nothing wrong with not being fluent. It's just a different approach to making music from the one I use and teach.

Periphery - Ragnarok has one of the slickest grooves I’ve ever heard in a heavy song for anyone that enjoys metal/metal-adjacent music. This explanation is the best I’ve seen of what makes music with a groove so compelling 👍
@PhilBestMusic9 күн бұрын
Thanks! I do think metal can be the grooviest music although maybe that's not the word used most often to describe it. As a kid, I was fascinated by the epic storytelling feeling of old school metal - and it was the poetic metre that did it.

Really really struggling with this lately I truly appreciate you tackling this concept. I've been a guitarist for 15 years and still to this day think im absolutely awful. Like a regular thought in my mind is I could get a beginner guitarist better than me in a couple months. I think this while actively having one of the worlds most technically skilled guitarists in the world as my teacher for the last year. While writing an entire album myself and practicing every single day still I can not help but feel terribly unskilled and useless. I have yet to find a way to fix my brain and get past this feeling of dread especially when you jump online and see just perfect musicians everywhere it's daunting.
@PhilBestMusic9 күн бұрын
I really invite you to look at the kinds of things I discuss in this video to solve this. Our enemy is self-consciousness. Try to find a way to relax and focus your attention more inwardly and less on the outward reults. Feel the music inside - in your body and soul, stop comparing yourself to others, and give yourself the joy of playing simple things you like finding the sense of reward in doing this. Even playing a simple strumming rhythm on an easy chord can be so rewarding and amazingly beautiful if you feel the sense of flowing rhythm coming from the body. Play to express and enjoy the sounds purely for yourself, and the pressure you're putting on yourself can lessen. It can appear counter-intuitive or paradoxical, but striving less for results often gets better results.

Maybe pencil in the structure in the score: bars 1-4 form the first cycle which is followed by bars 5-8 and then by bars 9-11 (the shorter 3-bar cycle) to form the overall 3-cycle section. Bar 12 kicks off the next larger section of 3 pairs of 4-bar cycles: 12-15 followed by 16-19 and then 20-23 followed by 24-27 and finally 28-31 followed by 32-35.

I love pianoteq. It blows all my old piano vsts out of the water and since I don't really have a good way to record a piano or digital piano directly otherwise it's made me able to actually record piano in a way that sounds pretty organic and clean. My only concern is that I wonder if my digital piano is a bit too old to take full advantage of pianoteq. I'm not sure if it picks up dynamics as intricately as pianoteq can actually represent, primarily. Using an old yamaha ydp-123. It kinda feels like everything is a bit louder than I expect and not that wide of a range. Not sure if getting something newer would change anything though.

When are one of the big manufacturers of digital pianos going either: 1. Ask Modart to license Pianoteq? 2. Give us a grand pianos sized Vpc1 / Avant grand cross, with haptic feedback and built in speakers. If there is a market for the Avant grand Nx3, I would imagine the market for 2 would be 10 time that size.

I am more in to acoustic piano playing. I have a Yamaha YUS5 acoustic and I love my piano a lot. The way you compared between this two piano vst is very sensible & useful. I have played many different brands acoustic piano as I am working with piano seller company as a piano specialist and I know about the pianos in depth as I said on my comment on your other videos. I never got impressed with digital pianos. I have many compositions ready but I can’t afford to record the acoustic piano and also there are many reasons like tuning and piano action is also keep on changing piano to piano so that’s the reason why I am looking for a good piano controller and mostly I will go ahead with Kawai MP series or May be the VPC series so that will have sense of playing on same action. If needed I will make minor changes on velocity curve and made the permanent setting. Pianoteq has very nice bloom and it gives every control as I can see on your playing. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. 🙏

Your explanation of on Pianoteq vst is carrying musicalities. I am more of acoustic piano player never got satisfied with digital piano except few model. Like Kawai MP11se and Novus5. I need your opinion on controlling piano. Which is the best controller for Pianoteq. I had a Roland RD2000 but I sold because I didn’t enjoy the piano tones. Action was decent but it wasn’t behave like acoustic piano action & Now I am waiting for Kawai replacement of MP11se & VPC1. I hope they will launch these 2 models in winter Namm. They already delayed too much. My concern is does it will work well with Pianoteq? I never tried both the models but I have watched many videos of experts and all of them saying that MP11se & VPC1 has better control on acoustic and very realistic action like a real grand piano. Also let me know which is a better pianos in Pianoteq 8. I have listed few 1) Steinway Model D 2) C. Bechstien 3) ANT Petrof 4) Bösendorfer 5) Gortrian and last is U4. I am asking this because whole bundle is too expensive for me. Whenever you are free please advise me on this. It would be a great help. Thank you so much 🙏❤️
@PhilBestMusic2 ай бұрын
My only advice is to keep looking for what you enjoy playing. It's all subjective. For me the PHA50 action on my Fantom - the sams as on the RD2000 - is wonderful, like a nice Steinway action which suits me having spent my years at music conservatoire playing Steinway Bs and Ds. I also like Yamaha actions a lot. It's all just personal taste. Keep trying things out and find the action the suits you.
@bhaveshmistry32552 ай бұрын
Firstly thank you so much for your reply. It means a lot really appreciate sir. 🙏 Yes I totally agree with you that the action is always a personal choice. I played RD2000 a lot but I like the action of the Kawai MP11se more and that’s the reason why I sold my RD2000. Now I have decided to go ahead with the Kawai. I am not in hurry as it’s a long term investment for me. I will wait for Kawai’s new MP & VPC series. Thank you again sir for your reply. 🙏❤🤗

Superb explanation! I am always looking for alternative of acoustic piano and I tried many digital piano. Only close I found is Kawai Novus5 but it’s so expensive so my eyes on vst’s I have tried many piano vst’s and I got discounted even I don’t like Keyscap much. Then I downloaded the trail version of this and I played, you know I immediately got impressed with all the different piano sounds libraries. I can say it’s the best available vst piano in the market. I have seen that VI labs is come out with new Modern D which sound s better than Pianoteq Model D but then it will take huge memory and also there’s no facility to try demo version from VI labs, so sad! How come I buy without trying it. The previously popular piano vst of VI lab is so impressive the name of that vst is Revonscraft but again without trying it’s a risk. So final I have made my mind for Pianoteq specially trying demo version and watching your videos. Just waiting for a Black Friday sale but there’s no news on Black Friday sale on Pianoteq website. I am waiting for the sale I wish they will offer a good discount like many others. I am a pianist and Composer and soon I will start recording my compositions the way want & Pianoteq will play good roll. Frankly speaking I had a some questions regarding the user license sharing but surprisingly I didn’t find any email id for customer’s query on Pianoteq website but final I ask my friend and he explained me about this. Thanks man for making videos like this and sharing your experience. 🙏

This was good. Thinking does get in the way. I can't groove to a click but if I tap along to my beat I can see it's stable on the BPM readout. And sounds much better than something aligned to the grid.
@PhilBestMusic2 ай бұрын
Thanks! I find that letting my groove flow naturally in a flexible, structured matrix means playing close enough to a click track is actually way easier than trying to adhere to the grid perfectly. And of course, the results sound better, too.
@matthammond17372 ай бұрын
@@PhilBestMusic The problem I have though is trying to do things on my own track by track. Wouldn't you say that there is a magic chemsitry of a band all locking on to a groove together?
@PhilBestMusic2 ай бұрын
I hear you! There's definitely a magic entrainment of rhythm when people play together. Working on your own, you need to generate a strong rhythmic flow that feels like a wave in your body and a poetic storytelling as an expressing, "telling" feeling and entrain to that. The problem is that a click track can have the effect of draining that all-important energy away. It can even make us slightly paranoid about timekeeping which is the killer. Have you tried using a reasonably apt pre-made drum groove instead of a click, as a guide? It can be a fairly neutral one but it must have feel and flow. Obviously you can take it out later but it can help you play with groove as you put the tracks down.
@matthammond17372 ай бұрын
@@PhilBestMusicWell the click is just an annoying beeping noise to me, I can't get along with it. All my favourite songs are not played to a click anyway. Back in Black famously goes all over the shop tempo wise. Ideally, I would like to play bass with a drummer to nail the drum feel or play drums with a bassist. But I'm on my own for now so I will just wait for a day when I am well rested and on form and lay down the rhythm parts on guitar and then drum to that. I've experiemented with quantised drums and with playing to a click but this method described above gets the most head-nodding feel. I like what you say about telling a story. Thanks for your advice.
@davidjohnson16542 ай бұрын
I love how you say to not try to play perfectly with a metronome, but to feel the groove from within. I have come to realize that the tension I feel when I've played with a click before is not so much due to the challenge in keeping up with it, with keeping on-time, but it is a tension between my soul wanting to feel my way versus the scientific, clinical, sterile click. And this, to me, goes right to the heart of why music played without a click-track is and feels so much warmer, accessible, "human." The slight variance of the human groove is what lends to the feel of music. Case in point: Paul McCartney said that The Beatles purposely slowed the tempo very slightly on the last part of "Michelle." Music is conversation, at its basic level, between the composer/players and the audience. And human conversation is not robotic; it flows from the soul. :)
@PhilBestMusic2 ай бұрын
Very true! Sometimes, allowing the tempo to shift is good. Other times, it's fine to keep the tempo stable, and we can play with a click track in a natural way, as long as we don't try to make everything hit the metric time spots.
