Interesting, and I love innovative technology. Crucially there are two uses of the word 'could' and one 'potential' which should be highlighted when watching this video. This makes this video 'greenwash' from two of the planet's biggest polluters. The 'just under 19% of the 360 billion litres currently used' leaves just over 81% of the fuel still not made by this process, and is the *very maximum* that the steel industry estimates could be made. Fermentation and distillation is quite an energy-intensive process, and ethanol from maize is just as carbon intensive as ordinary fossil fuel. Aviation is growing by several percent a year so this 360 billion litres is rising. Fast. Realistically, if we're to survive the coming climate catastrophe, we need to consume less steel and stop flying.

My first bike was a 35 pound straight gauge Schwinn Varsity 10 speed. I graduated to a Columbus tubed, 22 pound Italvega bicycle made in Italy. I have loved steel since I first round the indestructible Schwinn. I presently own both aluminum and steel bikes. My steel bikes are made of Columbus and Tange butted chromoly. I don't race, I simply love cycling on steel. No carbon. Carbon has no soul. Its rightful place is in the professional peloton. I bet there a few UCI riders who ride steel bikes when they simply want to ride a classic bicycle. My steel Masi is joy to ride, light, responsive, and classically beautiful. So happy to see the resurgence of steel.

blablabla....marketing gibberish. Can I get a steel bike frame that weight's less than 1 kg? No? So stop telling pr garbage about steel returning to pro cycling.
@sandydennylives13925 жыл бұрын
But a 953 bike can be made at the uci weight limit, 6.8 kg on the nose, so your argument is bunk. Rider weight limits make CF frames a bullshit fraud.
@BioStuff4155 жыл бұрын
with a carbon fork - steel works. You can get a sub 20lb bike.

The problem I see is that you either get a steel because it is cheap. A nice spec steel bike on the other hand is really expensive. Didn't see much middle ground there.

I have a steel gravel bike with a carbon fork (Jamis Renegade Expat 2018, uses Reynolds 520, comes with a mix of Tiagra, FSA, WTB, Ritchey, etc) and I absolutely love it, spent more time in my life riding steel than anything else and besides the weight and maybe some rust issues I see zero downsides and reasons not to use it today

Nice frames. Shame about the silly forks.

I don't care what they can do with shapes and patterns when it comes to carbon frames, when I see a steel bike I fall in love all over again. Carbon may have a special purpose and that's only to produce a light weight frame for racing but if you really love cycling get a steel bike.

I just think steel bikes look better. The thin tubing, just a lot more elegant, in my opinion. For me, just a little more style, feel and personality.

I'm still riding my Bridgestone RB1 from 1993. I've suited it up with Eason Carbon Wheels and new school Shimano 105 jewelry, and no one drops me because of the bike's tubes. In fact, I'm pedal-for-pedal with the local club knuckleheads on the climbs! Steel. Keeping it real.

Most of my main rides are all Steel - basic 4130 is nice and springy but my True Temper OX platinum road frame is quite stiff for steel. All other factors of a bike being equal except the frame, steel is going to be slower, no doubt. What isn't equal is the ride quality of steel. What I cannot wrap my head around, is why Genesis or anyone would put a pressfit bottom bracket on a steel frame. There are no benefits to a wider bottom bracket shell when the metal tubes cannot be optimally large enough in diameter to take advantage of the added width. Threaded bb's are so much easier and I'd bet lighter than a steel press fit shell/bb combined.

Steel are amazing but not cheap. I use two bike - one road and one single (fix). In future i will try to buy frameset to CX.
@treygray28176 жыл бұрын
Steel is cheap if you're willing to purchase older (15 years+) frames. If you want a new custom frame it's cost prohibitive for the majority of cyclists. There have been minimal technological advancements in steel frames over recent decades; an older 853 frame can be found for very cheap and be built into a delightful ride.

l have both an old 84 520 double butted CROMO lugged steel frame with upgraded parts including bigger tires and a 1x ,l love and probably ride it more around town than my carbon TREK 5200 .The TREK is fast accelerating but for longer ride comfort STEEL IS REAL not to mention 34 yrs old with original BB /headset :) PS l would love a new 853/953 frame set

my favorite bike is my mid 90's 853 steel frame. i dont know how Ti vs stainless would be but if i ever get to have a custom frame made.. i would probably go with 931 or 953 as i just love the material.

Having ridden steel and titanium, I'd say that Steel is Real, but Titanium is alive, you kinda feel the frame springing more lively as it is on Steel, still both are my favorites materials on any bike

Steel is wonderful, ad extremely versatile, however the production of steel in different countries varies considerably, the environmental damage that can result from steel mills in some countries is much higher than others, it all depends on the Governments of each country and the control they place on the operation of these mills. Environmental damage can be reduced significantly through modern plants, and excellent control measures, unfortunately these measures have costs and need to be passed onto consumers, with consumers wanting lower prices, the lower cost countries with lower environmental controls have an advantage in the marketplace. Vote with your wallet and only purchase steel that is produced with those concerns in mind.
