These are great players this was roughly when i first learned about pool via espn, couldnt wait to try the game out, our cable remote was a giant box with mechanical buttons it was attached to the cable receiver box via a thick black cord, those were the days lol. I noticed that someone called 'pay-per-view', 'pay-TV' instead, i though pay-per-view was out at this time but maybe not or maybe the name wasnt popular yet

I was never a fan of hopkins stroke. Has a perfect practice stroke then stops right before the cue ball , then uses a push stroke to hit the cue ball.

Mike adjusted to the table instantly....as if playing on it his whole life. The commentator saying at the opening break about the cloth being new is pure BS. And the more knap theory is pure ignorance. The casino being the obvious proprietor of the event, wanted their brand logo visible, apparently they were calling the shots here in whatever contract was made and I seriously doubt ESPN was the entity in question as one might think....compared to what a corporate DEMAND would be these days when compared to the pool association under agreement with the casino back then and ESPN itself being a third party interloper in effect that was going more for the ride of coverage rather than having any real say as to match scheduling, layouts etc ....or else like today, the probability of the cloth logo would say something else, such as ESPN on the cloth or whatever corporate entity in oversight and therefore sponsorship etc... What happened here was, they took the craps table cloth off of one of their pit tables that had the casino logo on it and the cloth of course not designed for pool play....was so slow, that what you witness here in terms of slow in comparison to typical simonis etc today, WAS, first of all, not uncommon because typical cloth used in pool rooms back then were not universally faster like today. BUT..... still not quite as slow as this cloth was and what you are not seeing is the fact that they took a hot clothes iron to it in the attempt of making it somewhat faster. They ironed that cloth in between matches and during as well....and thus the story behind and reason for the it being so slow. AS WELL AS, a testament to how good Mike was who.... Made it look easy like he always did, thus the best player for his era, pre Efren etc who of course had a say in pool history as well....but I don't care what anyone says, Mike overall in 9ball and straight pool etc was WAY more precise and efficient than Efren and when it comes to overall efficiency in terms of the least cue ball travel and because I personally think it matters effectively....was Mizerak. If you study the overall amount of cb travel distance on average between the 3 players from any match they have played in general, it is easy to see what I'm talking about and Efren obviously having the most distance by far, probably due to the lack of a straight pool background. But in Efren's case, it must be said his rail knowledge was superior and therefore the side note of fact that I myself say from observation.....i dare anyone to present evidence of Efren coming or going multiple rails where he inadvertently scratches in a side pocket. I dare anyone.... Thus, an excessive amount of cue ball travel....is a negated factor of ineffectiveness in his case, when admitting what is unarguable fact, that ultimately the less travel distance...the better.... even though pool is arguably a more improvisational and or adaptive endeavor as we presently and historically and reasonably know it. ....its arguably better to be more knowledgeable like Efren, rather than not BUT more precise instead like Mizerak etc. Also if i am not mistaken, Efren was part of this Espn coverage originally back in the day because I remember seeing it in Boston when it first aired....as well as the women's final also.

1:36:21 awful. just awful. it's simply amazing how bad most "pros" were at even the most basic of fundamentals. then missing a 9 ball that an apa 5 would make 9 out of 10 times. awful. just a bunch of road players flailing around the table. everything they learned was from losing money. nobody trained to actually be a good player back then. nobody
