My boss does every one of these things. I recognize he can’t help it and is truly well intentioned but it is very frustrating. I can say he has gotten somewhat better over the past 17 years. Sometimes he doesn’t even say anything out loud, just kind of looks around a little bit at the project I’m fabricating as to imply it should be going faster. I just have to not let it get to me, lol, but sometimes it is difficult

This is a very good video. Thank you for sharing. I worked with managers who always check in and need to be in every single meeting and conversation, sometimes I just couldn't tell if they were micromanaging or just being proactive. But either way, I would feel I wasn't trusted. Also sad that most managers won't realize they are micromanager.

Servant leadership? An oxymoron. In the church we have servants: people with different roles, from organising to being organised. Leading people is supporting them to be effective in their roles.

@Me_Caveman8 ай бұрын
Servant leadership is not an oxymoron. The purpose of a leader is to serve in the interests of those led, ideally towards a common goal. You need to remove associated connotations around the word "servant" to understand it is more than the associated stereotype.

Great wisdom and resonates with the core teaching of Lao Tzu (The Master), the author of TAO TE-CHING (CLASSIC OF THE WAY AND OF VIRTUE, 600 BCE) who wrote: VERSE 7. I've been in a micromanaging team for 2 years now and I can honestly say its been the worst 2 years of my life and my health both physical and mental has deteriorated immensely. They've been trying to get rid of me for some times now by micromanaging me to death and monitoring all my emails and work and asking to check them before I send them, then always finding ways to "fault" it. Even the most small tiny imperfections gets put on a pedestal while positive achievements and feedback from customers are never acknowledged by them nor have I received any encouragement or praise for any improvements I've made. Now they've placed me on an "informal work plan" accusing me of not doing a few things which I have been doing, just because I did it right 50 times it doesn't seem to matter but when I do it wrong once it becomes the end of the world in their eyes. It sucks , they tell me I can always check with them if im unsure about anything but when I do check with them they would tell me im relying on them too much and that I should be knowing all this, then during the times when I actually do my own research and did not get the answer 100% correct they would tell me off for not checking .....Its so damn confusing trying to get on their good side because I need to job for financial reasons. It's really hard when everything I do, they even time my toilet breaks, and lunch breaks, and if im 1-2 mins late they would make me stay back 1-2 mins even after work is complete just for the sake of "doing your hours". Ridiculous. Now they've collected a whole list of micro errors and some bigger errors that I've "made" recently and trying to get me fired through this performance plan which seems very hard to meet as they seem to expect absolute perfection always. Other team members has made mistakes too but they don't seem to be put on all these micromanagement measures, it just seems like im the only person being targeted here, at least more severely than others. I have reported this manager once before for racist over the phone to me she told me "clearly, our english is not on the same page" , ever since reporting her she has put me on this strict "performance monitoring" thing where I cant even send out an email without waiting overnight for her to approve it first and correct me. It almost feels like subtle / subconscious racism to me, they feel the need to correct the way in which I write even if the facts are correct and the language is easy to interpret. I've received many positive feedbacks from customers and they have never had a problem with my communication style. Im the only Asian person in a team of pre-dominantly females in their late 40's - 60's working in education offices. I have emailed HR for the second time just detailing the whole thing and how im being singled out and tabs beeing kept on me, I'm not sure if I have much luck because I've got 2 managers in the team against me trying to get rid of me due to technicality and performance issues, but it looks like they're the ones trying to purposely magnify and create issues so they can find a reason to get rid of me. I just honestly don't know what to do.

In normal situations my boss is not a micromanager at all, but the current pandemic with forced remote work is sadly evolving him into one. Before the lock-down working remotely was not allowed at all, so now during the pandemic he calls me multiple times a day on Skype for updates and to delegate me non-project related tasks. As a developer working from home is in most cases a lot more efficiently than trying to code inside the chaos of today's offices, sadly those Skype calls are now becoming worse than the chaos of the office building before the pandemic. I have tried to return to the office during the pandemic in the hope that there would be a bit more trust and less interruptions, to only meet colleagues suffering some kind of 'lock-down induced social-life deficiency' issue, resulting in the inability to shut their mouth for even 1 minute straight. But the biggest issue is the micromanaging reducing my productivity, followed by my manager increasing the amount of micromanagement due to lower productivity. Rinse and repeat endlessly. Yesterday I lost 3 hours in planned meetings, and another hour in fragmented unplanned meetings that could've been an email. At 10 am, 12 pm and 3 pm. Include another hour for mails in the morning and 5 hours have passed giving me about 3 hours left for actual coding. Today I lost two hours in two separate meetings, another two hours playing remote help-desk + 1 hour for mails, again 5 hours that I'm not working on the current project... For tomorrow there is already another big meeting planned ahead of 3 hours long with the whole team. Note that this does not include the preparation time required for each meeting! I understand that communication is important, but how can I explain my boss that those fragmented interruptions are massive productivity killers for my kind of work? I already tried explaining that it's a lot more efficiently to ask me all questions at once during a follow-up at 9 or 10 am, or during my lunch-break. Sadly without any result.

Let's all step back and be clear here. If you are, like myself, a true servant leader, the reality is this gentleman[ is a presenter. Not a Servant leader. In othwr words, he is a mesanger but his "hustle" is to encapsulate a concpet in to strong/entertaining talking points thatv will bemefit organizational resources. Something the brass can tout to the board (we introduced the following in to our Leasdeship Channel) blah blah. It's like this> I have been in a leadership (15+ org) for 20 years now. the moment I realized the true impact a "boss" has on an employee, I realized how blessedI was to understand this and figured "I can either be lazy and think only of me....I can keep my mouth shut and just earn a chack....or I can learn from the oftern radical) leadersship amethods I've employed. Fine-tuning the good, and learning from the bad. Succing version..all my employees wake up each day excited about coming to work, (secretly( hoping I catch them in the act of doing something great (which I do daily)...and I cannot tell you ho many emplyees from my colleagues teams have approached me about joining my team. Remember, people rarely quit theri jobs. Instead, they get away from their sH*tty bosss. I insist my teak hold me accountable as I do them. My teams exceed (by far) all other like other like group. We deliver the most code at the most freuqnt intervsals, always hightst quality. Thid is not lip talk, instead supported by the analytics I pull so my team understands their impact.

As a person who worked for a micromanager for over a decade, it's best to look for another job or resign and move on. Being micromanaged to death isn't good nor healthy for your wellbeing. Despite my best efforts to maintain, the boss never changed and she got worse when she married the number 2 guy in the company. The boss's husband was also the boss of our department director. This made it easier for my boss to manipulate her boss, the director, into making my life a living hell on the job. I eventually resigned with a last day note on a Friday evening after work. I left and felt like a burden was lifted off my shoulders. It was the best decision I ever made!
