This isn’t my current idea however I was also curious if doing an economics IA focused on a Lorenz curve and Gina coefficient is overdone or advised against?
@LikeAMathClass8 күн бұрын
I tend to see one almost every year. So not sure if it's the 'best' idea. But if it is something that you are interested in and you are bringing in your own thinking/approach, it is something that could be done.

Would you have an email you’d be willing to provide for asking direct question? I feel like I have a unique IA idea but didn’t want to communicate it openly due to the recent controversies regarding plagiarism/collusion

It’s been difficult since they don’t really want to offer any feedback aside from the draft. I was just curious if doing Arrows impossibility theorem was a bit too ambitious
@LikeAMathClass8 күн бұрын
I'm not familiar with Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and after a _very_ quick wikipedia scan, it looks like it might be too ambitious. It seems like it would be a better EE. Overall, I tend to advise students to not just pick a mathematical topic and write about it. This is why I created this video for you to go through a 'topic generation process'. I know that HL IAs might be a little more theoretical, but as I have stated many times, I haven't taught HL, so I can't speak to that directly. If you are a SL student, I would definitely advise against.

Hey thank you so much I found this video really useful! I am currently doing "modelling my basketball shot" but I am a bit stuck since I do not know where to go with this, since there is no research question that it answers. I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions for me, Thanks!
@LikeAMathClass8 күн бұрын
Two things... First, this is technically called an Exploration. So you don't need a research question. The main focus is (a) what are you investigating and (b) how does the _mathematics_ drive or shape your thinking? Second, there is a sample IA that is given to teachers to show students that models a basketball shot. Generally speaking, it is not advised to do the same topic that is in one of the sample IAs, unless you approach it differently. So you may want to ask your teacher about seeing that IA to see if your approach would be different and/or advisable. Good luck!

"Optimization of the surface area of various heavy bag designs to minimize material use and costs for gyms" would you say this is a good IA. I might even use volume of revolution to find SA of more complexed shaped heavy bags(angled heavy bag). Ive been training boxing, mma, muay thai since i was a kid and my grandfather owns a boxing gym so the personal engagement is definitely there. Thanks!
@LikeAMathClass22 күн бұрын
The shapes of heavy bags are pretty simple cylinders which can be done without calculus (making something more complicated when a simple procedure is feasible doesn't make a better topic or use of mathematics). I would encourage you to look at some other object or shape.

what if i have the graph only???
@LikeAMathClassАй бұрын
Sounds like I've got another video to make! :) Domain: You need to look at the ends of the graph. If there are arrows, the graph continues on in that direction infinitely. If there are dots or the graph ends, then that is the end of the domain. Remember that open circles means that point is not included where closed dots means that value is also included. Range: Find the highest and lowest points on the graph. Sometimes these will be curves (called the maximum or minimum) sometimes it will be arrow (like noted in the domain). If the endpoints don't go higher than the highest/lowest point, then that is your highest/lowest value in your range. If the arrows point off past the highest/lowest point, then the range will continue on infinitely in that direction. I hope that clears things up a bit more.

Hi, and thank you for the video! I'm taking SL AA math, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on my ia topic? I was thinking of doing a mathematical proof of the flaws in democratic voting according to arrow's impossibility theorem, and this topic connects graph theory, combinatorics, matrix algebra and game theory. I'm really worried this topic lacks in the components of mathematics, as it does not include graphing any kinds of functions or using calculus, and I'm wondering if you think this could still be a strong IA topic?
@LikeAMathClassАй бұрын
To be honest, this feels waaaaay over the top for a SL Math IA. If anything, it sounds more like an EE than and IA, or more HL than SL. I would strongly recommend against this idea.

Great video man! Tell me one thing first please. Does that video and advices apply for me as a MATHS HL AI student?
@LikeAMathClassАй бұрын
As I have mentioned (in comments and I believe the video as well), I haven't taught HL. I've only taught SL Apps and SL AA. That said, the general construction of the IA is going to be the same across all four IB math courses. The big difference between SL and HL is the complexity of the mathematics. So if you feel that you really want to do a Probability IA and you have a solid idea from my other video where you are generating ideas (here's a link in case you missed that one kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKOco2mrh9GVesk), then my recommendation is to double check with your teacher to see if they agree that your level of mathematics will be appropriate for HL Apps. I hope that helps!

Goodmorning Sir, is there anyway for me to improve this research question: Analyzing the Trends and Correlations of Swimming Olympic Statistics(Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly) over the past 10 Olympics. I’m currently very lost in terms of the Math IA(AA SL), I’ve been able to work on my other IA’s, but not the math IA.
@LikeAMathClass2 ай бұрын
Hey. Well, this sounds like a lot of repeated mathematics, and the calculations/mathematics being done is a scatter plot, correlation, and possibly a trendline. Repeating the same thing over and over (4 different strokes) will knocked down with your points, _unless_ something different is happening with each stroke, which I'm guessing won't be the case. The only think I can think of, which might be difficult to do, is to try to track the motion of one of the strokes of your choice and try to model that. You can get software where you can plot points along a video and then try to model that stroke. And if you are a swimmer as well, compare that to your stroke. I get that this is getting a little further away from your original topic, but you can compare the different strokes and then look at statistics for the different strokes and see if you can see where there are issues with your stroke. But ultimately, I would not recommend you doing the same thing over and over with different strokes. I hope all this helps or gives you some more ideas. Good luck!

It's possible, but it also sounds like a stretch. I prefer modeling of a a natural phenomena rather than man made structures. And with the natural, I prefer things that are in motion rather than stationary objects.

Good morning sir, I do maths aa sl and really want to maximize my grades through this exploration. I am doing an IA in statistics so is there any tip of advice I could get to maximize my grade and meet the analysis requirements
@LikeAMathClass2 ай бұрын
Other than what is outlined in this video? Gather your own data. Make sure that it is meaningful and purposeful. Analyze the data and don't just assume that linear is the best (or only) option - check the residuals. Discuss why the model/data is relevant and be open to stating what didn't go well (and not "I need more data"). And if you can, connect to other topics (modeling, running a statistical test, etc). The more you can do beyond gathering data and creating a scatter plot, the better. The gathering and graphing data is expected. You need to go beyond what is expected because you have been gathering data and graphing since middle school. It's not SL quality work. I hope that helps.

Thank you for the video! I am writing an IA topic proposal and the main topics I am debating between is graph theory or finding the fractal dimension of neurons in the brain from an image through box counting. But I'm not sure if the research question of "What is the fractal dimension of neurons in the brain" would be too straightforward? Thank you for your help!
@LikeAMathClass2 ай бұрын
Sounds like you're a HL student. To be honest, I haven't taught HL so I'm not sure if these would be the best topics. But what I can deduce from what you have written and with nothing else to go on... Graph theory - you might be interested in this topic, but I don't see anything of use with you just saying, "I want to do graph theory". You probably need to do some more brainstorming with that one. Fractal Dimensions - This seems more of an EE topic than an IA topic. I've seen a couple EEs with fractals and the ones I've seen for IAs tend to be 'too ambitious' for an IA. But again, this is from the SL perspective. All that said, I'm sure if you go through the proper brainstorming process in this video and take it to your teacher, you're giving them a lot more to go on and help guide you to finding the right topic. Good luck!!
