I hear that the one major if/then statement thing is actually false. but yes the code is very inoptimal which is fine because it's a very non-intensive game. Now, if it was a 3D game using default unity models (which are probably pretty high-poly) while using shaders, a character outlines engine, and was created by an absolute creep, then yeah it'd probably be an issue. very sensationalist click-inticing title but clearly a letter of love to the game that is Undertale i'll keep gamemaker in mind i guess...

The game deleting itself is a cool idea on paper, but it's kinda unfair! You bought Undertale, you own your copy of Undertale now! Why should you now just not own your copy of Undertale, just because you killed too may innocent monsters IN A FICTIONAL GAME!!!?!??

I love how the title of the video makes it seem like it will give you a heart attack when in the end it's just about: "OK, Undertale isn't perfect, it has errors... but it doesn't matter." :)

clickbait, i fucking hate undertale and thought for once someone would of finally made a video agreeing with me so i wouldnt have to write a 20 page google document in a discord channel to explain why i hate this boring, brain dead, terribly designed game but instead no this video is for fans of undertale. thanks for getting my hopes up

I'm not making a game because I need money. I lost all my friends, my family hates me and I discovered I was SA'd as a kid. I'm not making something for people to have fun with, I'm vivisecting my mind. It's my way of self-therapy. I'm not giving my mental health away in for 3 bucks.

I had already heard from The Primeagen that all the dialogue in Undertale is inside a switch statement but I couldn't find any source online, so this video is exactly what I needed lol That's an immediate subscribe from me

You sly dog, you got us here by a clickbait in the title! It should've been called 'Undertale is a horribly coded game'. |D Prepare to see a lot of angry people who'll jump to conclusion seeing the thumbnail, lol. And I really wish you luck with the channel, I don't want people expressing their anger in the comments or disliking the video without watching it.

usually switch statements (and big if statements with a similar structure) are optimized at compile-time into a jump table. if this is the case even a switch statement with a billion options would not slow things down at all. it's not as dirty as it looks

i think the swtich bit was a little off base, loading a csv file is slower then many switch cases. looks cleaner though and in a game like undertale the performance hit would be negligible but still its not more efficent.

I mean, Toby's coding is kinda bad. But your criticism is making you sound like your only experience in programming is reading a book on it you picked up last month
@YuNoGuy12318 сағат бұрын
This video is kinda neat, though the statements made about the switch statement being "slow" or "unoptimized" are incorrect. It's still wrong to do dialogue this way because it makes the code difficult to read and add onto, but it doesn't make it "slow". A switch statement has a constant speed no matter how many cases are in the statement, this is why it's preferred to use a switch statement over a long string of elseif statements. In fact, depending on how the code is written, it would likely be *faster* than accessing a JSON file. (Since in order to access a JSON file you need to make a read request to the storage device as opposed to ram, though you could just store the JSON file in an array, but even then, that's unlikely to be faster than a switch statement.) Again, it's still wrong to do that massive switch statement, but it certainly isn't wrong because it's slow.

Games may not need the best codebase to work, but it certainly, *CERTAINLY* helps the development process if you learn loop statements instead of copy and pasting the same thing over and over..

I hate that feeling when you can tell from a title and thumbnail both what the video's about and what the writer wants a handful of people to click it _thinking_ it's about. Like I would rather be legitimately fooled, so I can accuse it of being clickbait, rather than only being able to say "it just feels kinda grody, yknow?"
