Doesnt this defeat the purpose of having a nice looking pond? No offence but it looks horrible in the garden with the cover. In the wild fish wouldnt have this treatment and survive fine.
@KoiBoyUKАй бұрын
No offence taken at all! in terms of looks, the tunnel is only staying on over winter and me and my girlfriend aren't really fussed about how the garden looks over winter. Also, having the polytunnel allows me to spend more time chilling by the pond as it shelters me from the wind and rain. Yes the fish would survive fine but so would we without central heating in our homes! We would however be more unhappy and run a lot higher risk of illness, and in extreme cases, perhaps even death! Thanks for watching :)

I have a 1000W aquarium heater in my 2600 gallon pond heated to 18c and it seems to do a good job. My pond is insulated and covers on top. But I don’t think the outdoor temps here in the States have been as cold as yours. I guess as winter temps gets colder here I’ll see if it can still keep up.

Are you feeding them that 360 food over winter? I’m glad the 500w has been working out. I recently acquired a 1400w aquarium heater from a friend I tried using. The only problem is 64 degrees is the lowest setting it can go down to. It was on constantly so I ended up having to unplug it. Electricity cost is just too high.
@KoiBoyUKАй бұрын
Hi Ty, I bought a seperate thermostat with plug sockets in so i can overide the thermostat down to whatever temperature i choose. I am still feeding the 360 but I am feeding them the 'sensitiv' variety which has higher concentration of health promoting oils and lower protein content which are both ideal for over winter :)

Great video again. I am not a big koi guy. I have a few "normal" carp in my pond, but my parents had them when i still lived at home. And they just stopped feeding them when winter started. And now i do the same. Whats your opinion on that method? Again, great videos!
@KoiBoyUK2 ай бұрын
Thanks! There are a lot of different rule of thumbs out there, some say to stop feeding once its below 10c, some say 5c but they are only that, rule of thumbs. A lot of people will let the fish tell them if they are hungry with special emphasise of staying well clear of overfeeding. This is personally my favourite approach.

@KoiBoyUK fish are fine, they are cold blooded. My pond freezes over without issue and I've had my fish for 30 years, never a sick fish in all that time. It's natural for fish to shut down and the only way they can do that is for the water temp to drop.
@KoiBoyUK3 ай бұрын
@@deanmiles8421 I agree that I’m sure they will be fine, and I will be letting the temp drop low like they would naturally as I feel it’s important. But this will just keep the very bitter colds away. Plus it means I can enjoy the pond a bit more 😊
