That is very interesting! Birds have great nest-building skill.

what ia a chest nut for such a large bird

The more I observe these birds, it becomes clear that they will eat just about anything of vegetable origin, large or small.

Pretty grebe, that looked like a good meal. :)

Isn’t December wintering time? Didn’t know birds could breed in winter
@RalphHancock2 күн бұрын
Herons often breed at this time. Since they live on fish, there's no winter shortage.
@Anvar10712 күн бұрын
I love herons

Quite impressive they can build those structures in the water, mostly with their beaks
@RalphHancock3 күн бұрын
They can and do move large waterlogged branches several feet long. There was a nest built up from the bottom in 3 feet of water on such a foundation. I have no idea how they manage it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Black-headed Gulls were trying to be sneaky and steal from the Jackdaw. A common characteristic of gulls.
@RalphHancock3 күн бұрын
Yes, certainly. But a Jackdaw can see off a BHG in a direct confrontation.

I love the entertainment gulls perform. Look at and listen to the Black-headed Gulls getting excited for food offerings. And then there's always bound to be a dominant gull that makes calls and goes after other gulls. There's been times I've seen a dominant gull grab a hold of the other one it's shooing off.

For anyone curious about the restaurant; it’s called, the “serpentine bar and kitchen” in Hyde Park, London.
@RalphHancock4 күн бұрын
But absolutely no one calls it that -- not least because there are two restaurants on the Serpentine, this one at the Dell and the other at the Lido.
@logicalblackman82284 күн бұрын
@ well, if anyone wanted to find the restaurant, the name I gave would direct them to it.

A non-breeding Common Gull looks a lot like the non-breeding Ring-billed Gulls here in the Northeastern US.

Was one of those pigeons a Wood Pigeon/Rock Pigeon hybrid?
@RalphHancock5 күн бұрын
No, an ordinary Wood Pigeon. Looks young as the white collar is incomplete. I don't think they cross-breed.

It's not the salad they like, it's the cheese and the greasy mayonnaise.
