Cheers from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I just subscribed to yours. While I'm mostly into serious aquascaping, I also "love being a kid playing with pond water!"

It's all about biodiversity for competition of resouces and creating a self-sustainable home for each creature. Focus on these and this balance will thrive forever as it does in nature. The leaf litter was a good start. Try building an underground mesh cave or cavern with two tunnels on opposite ends of the set-up. One small tunnel that leads to the surface and another tunnel that will have an aerator inside a thin serrated PVC pipe to act as an Under Gravel Filter. This will create a gentle water flow.

Good idea with the tunnels, will have to remember that for when I try again. Learned plenty already and look forward to trying again in the future. Thanks for the advice

Would've been interesting to see a fusion. Obviously more/less light, more diversity, more or less of something was needed for at least one organism (keystone?) or more in the tank that they would've received in the pond. However, with some plants that were less fussy, the whole thing might have been saved.

I agree, with a little planning and a good selection of different plants this could easily be a viable tank for the long term, but this tank was always going to be a short term experiment. I'm already thinking of the future trying some sort of pond build, gotta see what happens!

I watch loads of videos on terrarium builds & reptile enclosure builds to relax in the evening & always think I would love to be able to do that but between work, kids & my wallet I feel like I'm unable to as have no idea how to start or if i have time 😭

Terrarium building is really easy to start and can be very cheap. Your biggest expense is normally the plants but even they can be found cheap in the right places. This whole build cost me about £30 in total. If your really stuck for parts, nature is full of great stuff, just find yourself a jar or container, head to you local woods and take small amounts to add, mosses and rocks make for a simple but effective terrarium to start with. Great activity for kids too. Hope you get a chance to build your own, it's a great hobby to have.

I'm always going round shops seeing boxes and thinking "oh that would work as a terrarium" my wallet is the only thing stopping me from buying them all

Do you have any plants from your youth that you love? or any interesting plants you would like to see more off?

Using up left over material makes me feel better about spending so much on scaping. Anyone else have the same issue?

Thanks for all that watched. What's your thoughts on the tank, Does it come across well as a Desert Canyon?
