Hey David, I was wondering if it is possible to replace the fuel level sender with the engine in the car. Does the intake manifold need to come off? I've searched online and can't find out hardly anything about this - even where it is located. I figured you would know if this is a DIY job or not, or better left to a mechanic. Thanks a lot! -Tom
@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official 13 күн бұрын
Hey Tom! Yes, it certainly is possible. The fuel level sender is located in the fuel tank. Pop the frunk, there’s a metal dome held down by 4 nuts. Take that off and the top of the fuel level sender / pump assembly is under there. You’ll need to take off the ring that secures that in place (often very tight). There is a special tool for taking those rings off, but you can also use a hammer / punch to begin turning it. Before taking this off, do whatever you can to ensure the tank isn’t full. More empty, the better. Definitely a DIY-able job; just be careful when handling fuel. I believe in you!

Ohh! Understood. Hmmm, ok, that is a bit tougher. I’ve never removed one with the engine in the car. At the very least, it’d require removing the throttle body, intake plenum, and AC compressor. From there, it’d likely require removing the right side intake manifold for headspace clearance. It’s a pretty long part. In short, it’d be a pain to do, but certainly doable. Has yours failed?
@aboyandhisdog

@@FunAhead_TV_Official Has mine failed...well, that is the question! Every time I do an oil and filter change, I measure the oil that came out and it is always about 6 qts. Now, I understand that my capacity is about 8.75 qts. and somewhere I read that 3 qts. stays in the car. So I always add 6 qts. and the level is at the top, or with the top space open on the dash display. In other words, just about right give or take. I would like to have it read a hair lower so this next change I intend to only put in 5 qts. and see what the level is and then over time top up as / if necessary. The crazy thing is...all the stuff I read says that this engine takes 9 qts. for an oil change with filter. In fact, the PO's invoices for oil changes all say that he was being charged for 9 qts. But 9 qts. is 3 more qts. than the sump takes at an oil change as best I can tell. Either other people are way over filling this engine or I am way under filling my engine! I have never used oil nor have I ever had a "oil level or pressure" light illuminate. The engine is the H6 3.6L in the '06 C2. No mods. All my owners manual says is "oil change with filter - 8.7 qts". It doesn't say if that is the fill for a new engine ( total capacity) or if it is the fill for an oil change. One thing I'm certain of is that if my oil level display on the dash is accurate, if I put in more than 6 qts., I would be over filling my car by some 3 qts! I've been through the Rennlist forum and many others and guys are all putting in 9 qts. at oil changes. I think guys are way over filling their engines. BTW...the 997's don't have dip sticks. -Tom.

Very interesting issue! Well, I guess it’s not out of the question that the sensor could end up failing over time and give a faulty reading. Not ideal when you can’t tell how much oil is in your car. Have you read online of these failing for other people? I really reeeeeally wish so many OEMs didn’t go the way of the digital dipstick back in the mid-2000s. I get why they did it, but they could have tried a little harder. Now, here we are almost 20 years later wondering if the reading is accurate. Certainly wouldn’t have that issue with an “old fashioned” dipstick!

@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official 22 күн бұрын
Awesome!! Nope, I did not. It’s very thin gauge metal, so it’s not spaced off the bottom by much. If anything, it’ll help give it a little less resistance when drawing in oil, but not high enough off the sump to risk starving it of oil. That was my thinking.
@GC-kp7lo

I have been enjoying your videos. One more thing you have to do to bulletproof the engine and that's to improve on the AOS. Get yourself a UAOS with track drain. It has many benefits including the ability to run an extra 1-2 quarts additional oil over what you are running with your FVD/LN deep sump. This extra oil will not only further help with oil pressure, but the UAOS track will help to eliminate intermix issues associated with the AOS failing, not to mention it can better process the oil under high G scenarios which the AOS cannot handle. It's a no brainer. Good luck on your track day.
@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the heads up! I’ve considered it, but have not had any issues on track with the stock AOS. Maybe someday though!
@GC-kp7lo
@GC-kp7lo 22 күн бұрын
@FunAhead_TV_Official unfortunately, you will. The oem aos is suboptimal which is why we all went to the motorsports aos. But the motorsports aos can't process oil levels above full. The UAOS track can process all of the oil in a deep sump (2 qts) plus an addition 1-2 qts on top of the additional oil in the deep sump. The M96 NEEDs lots of oil to prevent oil starvation and facilitate oil pressure. AOS and MS AOS can't handle the extra oil that the M96 needs. But the UAOS track can. You spend alot of time and money with your rebuild. No reason to put it in a position to fail if you don't have too.

So how much does this cost? Their website was rather confusing. Basically for my 3.4L M97 Cayman they list the 3.4 -> 3.8 Nikkies re-sleeve as ~$6200 including new pistons. This is with no assembly. Their website says "The price shown is for all six cylinders on the block process." Yet when I called them the guy on the phone said the price was per half case (only 3 cyl). So is it $6200 or $12400 for the whole engine to be sleeved? Obviously this is a massive difference in budget.

To all the Miata guys, This video is part of a series about bringing a neglected 944 into running shape again, and taking it to autocross events. My benchmark for how well I’m doing is my performance compared to that of other Miatas in my class… An underdog story. Or aging father vs athletic son... This entire series is a NOD to the Miata because of how good it is. I achieved my goal at one particular event by beating out every other Miata (the race I outlined in this video). I placed better than them, hence the title. It's not a claim of one car being better than the other. I mean no disrespect. Thank you for watching!

Personally, I would argue and say that this is not better than a Miata. Myself has owned a 1985.5 944 NA The only redeeming factor is that it is a transaxle car besides that it is not better. While the horsepower numbers may be greater, you’re gonna spend so much more money doing timing, belt replacements, water pump replacements, Hydraulic lifters getting stuck and not to mention this being an interference engine that can explode if your timing belt breaks. Buying a almost 40-year-old car comparing to a 20. Something-year-old car is not a good financial option at all. The cost to fix these cars are exponential unless, you were buying for a LS/k swap I would stay away.

Exactly! You’re correct, and by many metrics the Miata is an overall better car. The 944 is the older, less refined underdog, and that’s the point. You’re correct, hence my point about if you want a 911 and want to hold onto it for a long time (ie not sell it any time soon to get your money out of it) then it makes more sense to go the 996 route and refresh the engine, vs buying a 997 that’s an unknown quantity that’ll need to be rebuilt down the road anyway.

Great video! I have a 2001 C2 with 114k miles and I need to do an RMS due to leaking oil as the IMS was done previously, and the old Pandora's box of "while your in there" has scared me from digging in and doing what you have done. I agree with your analysis and you have encouraged me to go thru with this maintenance \ upgrade to a 3.8 conversion as well. Have only tracked the current 3.4 engine a couple times and I'm sure the 3.8 will only increase the track experience.

Hey Garret, thanks for watching! Awesome about your 2001 C2; you’ve got great taste ;) The 3.8L is definitely worth doing, all things considered. If you end up moving forward, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions; I’m always happy to help!

For someone who wants a fun/small-by-modern-standards late '90s/early '00s NA Porsche to rip on track without a care in the world, the math certainly checks out. Hope you enjoy the heck out of it!
