$850 / 650 miles =$1.308 $/mile IRS has vehicle expenses at 67 ¢/mile 650 miles * $0.67 = $435.5 to operating costs (mind you one way). $850 - $435.5 = $414.50 $414.50 / 10 hours = $41.45/hour Great. This is awesome, people would love to make this much an hour…but this isn’t reality. He still needs to drive back the 650 miles home and let’s assume he doesn’t get any jobs working his way back home (worst case senario) then what? What is the average 67 ¢/mile isn’t what his overhead is costing him? 650 miles * $0.67 = $435.5 to operating costs (now on the way back). $414.50-$435.50=$-21.00 20 hours of work to loose $21? Let’s say we live in a magical world where costs don’t exist… $850/20 hours =$42.5/hour Now we live in a world where costs exist going one way… $414.50/20 hours = $20.725/hour Now we live in the real world… -$21/20 hours = -$1.05/hour
