For games I would recommend using a mouse but you can map those to whatever you like so having arrows or any shortcut is no problem, also i do have a numpad on a layer mapped to the left hand but right now im experimenting with a few different number lauouts

Awesome video. I’m just wondering how well you can use the Svalboard for gaming in FPS games? I really want to try this out as the Azeron Cyborg II looks good but I don’t like to have to use a joystick for my thumb. The Svalboard has a way better setup for your thumb as you can easily hit all 5 keys.

I do map the wasd keys so that awd are on the home row and the d in on the lower row. That way it maps nicely to the svalboard (same thing with ortholinear keyboards) I don’t usually play fps games but I will try them a bit with the svalboard and report back though i think they will play really well as you have so many hotkeys available while not leaving the movement keys. You can even press the movement keys and one of the adjacent sidekeys at the same time.
@SpideyDiG
@SpideyDiG 12 күн бұрын
@ I totally didn’t even think about it being a problem on how many keys you can press at the same time compared to a normal keyboard. Can you test it for me as I need at least 3 for sure maybe 4 keys at the same time? Thank-you. If it can only press 2 at the same time the Svalboard wouldn’t really work for FPS gaming.

Well this has been a while ago and the prices changed a bit, wire was about 10€ but i have plenty left, microcontroller was 15€ but those got cheaper with the rp2040, keycaps and switches really depend on what you get i payed about 50€ for keycaps and 30€ for switches if i remember correctly. The 3d print is about 3€ in material if i would guess but excluding all the prototypes and failed prints. So about 110 € with the majority of the cost for the switches and keycaps. If you want a layout that doesn’t exist this is really nice and you also save on the pcb and case though it quite a bit of manual work

Very cool project, but the self-print option’s price feels discouraging. I understand higher costs if it were preassembled, shipped, or otherwise fully handled. However, when I’m already 3D printing all the parts, ordering a PCB, gathering materials, and assembling everything myself-essentially doing the bulk of the work outside of the initial design -it’s frustrating to still pay more than a high-quality metal keyboard just to access the schematics. I completely respect the idea of supporting designers and making a profit on your work. The downside is that this pricing can put the project out of reach for many people who would truly benefit from it. It’s unfortunate, because there’s so much potential here. Marking up the price simply because competing alternatives are also expensive feels a bit like pharmaceutical companies overcharging for medicine, knowing there’s limited competition. That sort of pricing strategy ends up hurting the people who need the product most.

As cool as it looks, is this really that ergonomic? Looks rigid just having your fingers seating fixed in that position. Won't some movement help with the health of the joints too?
@JanLunge
@JanLunge 23 күн бұрын
Yes and no, for repetitive movements the lack of distance really helps and I do tend to stretch my hands from time to time though also using the trackball is also a really nice and ergonomic movement exercise where you could get some smooth motion with your fingers. Also the fixed spots is a lot less of an issue than you think, the fingers still move a bit but its not a reaching just a normal movement.

The clips at the makes it look like you are reaching with an index finger. Like you don't have enough height for it to be at the correct resting place.

@JanLunge 23 күн бұрын
I haven't noticed that yet but it could be I will check that on the video thanks for the feedback. I have adjusted the position on the board quite a few times now and I do think the resting positions do change a bit overtime and I really value that the board can just change with you. I do need to say I'm not usually doing typing test and speed is usually not my goal with typing so the typing test did not feel that natural for me at least not in comparison to me coding.

Will the trackball fall out if you use a vertical mount instead of horizontal?
@JanLunge
@JanLunge 25 күн бұрын
It has this top retainer to keep it in place though the tighter you set it the more drag the ball has, I did not insert the top bearings for mine so the balls would fall out easily but it can handle some quite aggressive tenting still. With the top bearings it can be turned upside down without the ball falling out but you can shake it out if you try. Might depend a lot on the trackballs weight as they get a lot heavier the lager you go.

13:23 I was using one large 1080p monitor anyway, so I'm trying to replace it with Viture Pro XR "AR" glasses. They're pretty good so far for a lot of reasons. Yes, the corners are a little blurry for me, but a lot of tasks are working out great. There is a way to enable tracking so it stays pinned like a real monitor, but I haven't yet because you need Gnome, not KDE, for it. It's fine to wear these all day long, it's no fun to wear a VR headset all day long. I can also see my hands and stuff in them.

the price is really dishonest and saying this cant get cheaper is at leats naive, that self print kit would cost as most 50$ with PCBA and all the components
@JanLunge
@JanLunge Ай бұрын
Hey thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts. Look I get it $400 might seem like a lot for a Self-Print kit, but we are still in the custom keyboard and ergo scene this isn't mass produced stuff. And unlike slapping some switches onto a PCB this board requires real craftsmanship and an insane amount of R&D to even work. As a keyboard enthusiast I want Morgan to be able to keep building these sustainably where I especially appreciate the intricate customisation that usually gets cut for cost-saving. I do think that given time and more volume sold he might get better prices for the parts at scale but calling this pricing dishonest is a bit detached from the reality and the costs of running a business.

The demonstration at the end reminded me of operating my Steam Deck as a tablet in Desktop Mode. Its virtual keyboard is more limited on special characters, but otherwise the ergonomics of using it are great after enabling Trigger Clicks. Operating the rest of the system is ever so slightly more awkward than a standard M+KB setup, but by far the best I tried for a controller like grip. That is not even covering FlickStick in first person games, which feels plain better than standard M+KB input but is slightly less accurate. Though large swipes on the horizontal axis are more accurate again, due to the direct nature of the FlickStick mapping.

Yes though I think comparing them is misleading because of the switch resistance the azeron has harder to press keys which seems like a small thing but for ergonomics its one of the biggest parts for wrist and hand pain.

How are you controlling your desktop with the Svalboard while you are in VR with the Quest 3? Are you running a long wire from your computer to the Svalboard? I think the Quest 3 only allows Bluetooth input devices.

I do have the magnetic cable from the svalboard just running to my laptop, even if I step on it it just disconnects which is nice. But there are some apps that are working on input from the quest to the pc I will post about it when those are public. You can actually connect the svalboard with usbc to the quest and use the cursor and keyboard in VR, fluid is a nice app to try for that it has a really good VR cursor.

I recently got a trackball-equipped keyboard with a corne-layout. I totally get the need for an integrated pointing device! For me, it's the holy grail of ergonomic keyboards. Unfortunately, mine arrived damaged and I don't have the ability to 3D print one. Hopefully more accessible options will be available in the future. Svalboard is amazing, but the price keeps me from getting one for now.

Yes gaming depending on the game is really nice, you have way more keys available without moving your hand and the thumb keys are really nice to have as well. So for things like dota, league of legends or game utilizing a lot of hotkeys its perfect. I usually have a second keyboard at my desk for gaming but once I tried dota with it I put my other keyboard away as this is way better. Games with wasd movement are a bit different but with slight adjustment to the wasd keys (awd on the home row and s below) it works really nice, I don’t play much of these but I will try to test them a bit more. The side keys are press able while holding down the movement keys which could be a cool usecase

Interesting video, thanks for making it! Let me share some background: I've started using Colemak in 2007, and switched to a Kinesis Advantage 1 in 2008, and have gone through many ergo keyboards since, the sculpted ones being my favorite. Have been using a Charybdis for almost a year now, and it's my current favorite, followed by the Kinesis non-Pro 360, and Glove80 in the third place. Flat ergo boards, such as the ErgoDox, are fine too, just not quite as comfortable. I'm lucky to be healthy so haven't had the need to do something as drastic as a Datahand or Svalboard, but it's good to know there are even more options should the need arise. I was wondering, how comfortable are the sideways "key presses"? I always imagined them as being somewhat uncomfortable, but you mentioned nothing of the sort. So it seems they're the least used directions anyway, after straight down, and "regular" up and down. You mentioned two extra rows, so maybe the number row and F-key row, plus the diagonal keys from a regular upper and lower row on the index and pinky side, which also need to live somewhere.
@JanLunge
@JanLunge Ай бұрын
oh yeah the side ways keys are so nice to use I stopped thinking about them as "different" long ago. the up keys are just a tiny bit better than the top keys of a normal keyboard, all others are basically the homerow in comfortability. for the extra rows it has 15 keys for the fingers on each hand (excluding thumb) that are used for the normal alpha characters and now it does have 5 extra per hand that are not mapped yet but these are not the best ones to use for a number row in my opinion though F-keys might work well, i do prefer the numbers to be on a separate layer to be more comfortable.
