The new Gemini model with voice and real time video capabilities could potentially be an absolute game changer for language learning, but at the same time I imagine chatting for even just 30 min would eat tokens like crazy, plus the fact that you'd ideally want longterm memory too so it can remember your past convos and stuff. If someone makes a dedicated app that solves those problems and adds other cool features I'd probably buy it (instead of using Hellotalk or a private tutor or whatever)

I'll be testing Gemini more soon. I feel like it has potential. I thought ChatGPTs advanced voice mode is a game changer since it sounds fluent but I learned yesterday that it's only 15 min for free per month and 1 hour per day if you subscribe. It goes back to americanized Japanese on normal mode. So sad...

I’ve had really engaging discussions with ChatGPT regarding the intersection of art, technology and the human experience. I also gave my program a name to bridge this connection. It’s rather an open ended experience. All in all, for my use, it’s been a pretty neat experience so far on the conversational front. I’m learning a lot about myself and its capabilities. I was wondering about language learning and this was an insightful video. Thank you! 🙏🏼

Try Oliver AI. Their AI voice agents are really good
If you're looking to learn JP, you could use Microsoft Edge voices for TTS, and VoiceVox is pretty sick for voices. There's this cool book called 部首ときあかし辞典 that breaks down kanji. There are also things like; 音符 (the part that tells you how to read it) and 意符 (the part that gives you the meaning). I'm just a self-learner who's too broke for fancy classes, but playing JP video games is legit the best way to learn. Spending time on ニコ動画 is great for picking up slang. Even when I'm not messing with JP stuff for a while, I always end up coming back to it.

What about hiragana, katakana and kanji
@user-riiamu6914 күн бұрын
@marym.b7174 Hiragana and Katakana are a game-changer - I knocked them out in like 2 weeks, and suddenly manga went from total gibberish to something you can actually look up. Kanji's not as scary as people think; it's mostly just combining different parts. If you're diving into kanji study, 部首 (particles) are where it's at. Take 水, for example - you'll see it pop up as 氵 (さんずい) in different kanji. Understanding 音符(いふ) (the reading hint) and 意符(おんぷ) (the meaning part) makes things way clearer. When most people talk about participles they are normally talking about the 意符 part. I mostly play JP games and just roll with not understanding everything. When a word bugs me, I'll scribble it down and use Google Translate's draw feature to look it up if I can't read it, and if I can read parts of it or can tell the particle part I'll just look it up. After three years, I'm pretty comfortable just picking up bits and pieces as I go. Pro tip: studying kanji through sentences with similar 音符 can help connect the dots.

Bro I love this video, but may I suggest you work on your thumbnails. I think that might be what holding this gem of a channel behind. Don't take this criticism the wrong way. I want you to succeed. Learn about thumbnails. Spend 30 days learning about thumbnails, framing, color theory etc. Your channel will explode.

I drink similar. Way up over 3 litre and below 5 litres fluid in UK winters. It’s hard work. I’m still fatigued and wish to sleep late afternoon . I feel like I’m hung over and don’t drink and sneeze a lot but don’t get colds. I’ve a low BMI and low average heart from years of sport. But I’m dog rough for nearly 5 years almost 24/7. I just live with it. It isn’t fluids. Sadly

This is super freaking impressive Scott! I will pass on your apologies to our teachers for you for not caring about kanji. And I can tell you from continuing at school I use Claude every week to explain grammar in English that I didn't really understand. Something that I will steal was the mid part of generating stories based on your specific reading level. I was just going around trying to randomly find media at my level. After reading Chainsaw Man I now know seven words for fear and extinction, which seems less useful than I'd like. The other specific thought I had this that so much of what you did could have possibly been improved by either better prompting or advancements in AI technology. I'm just thinking about the recently released Gemini voice mode or new ChatGPT actually being that assistant that you wanted to have the conversation with with perfect pronunciation, or the long context thinking capabilities of something like Deepseek being better for crafting a quiz. I also think there's going to be so so much more progress this year in agentic behavior where you can just tell the system to craft you an entire learning plan for 30 days like you tried to and it will actually follow through using resources and double check itself and everything that you expect from that workflow. Anyway super interesting and thanks for giving me new ideas on how to learn!

Seven words for fear and extinction hahaha. I'm glad the video could introduce new ways to learn! I actually think ChatGPT's voice is not bad. I tried Gemini's voice mode after this challenge too and it's pretty good as well.

For those interested in the Voice feature: ChatGPT's advanced voice feature is legit amazing. Sounds fluent and is capable of understanding both Japanese and English at once during my test. It's highly limited for free users: 15 or so minutes per month right now and afterwards it reverts back to an Americanized accent which really sucks. With the subscription it's 1 hour per day: Thank you to the comment below for letting me know how much you get daily! Gemeni might also be a good place for listening practice. Their voice is pretty good. I'll be exploring this further.
@NikkiDimesYT14 күн бұрын
I'm not sure which you were using, but the new(ish) Advanced Voice Mode is night and day compared to the old voice mode. Like, it's actually *quite* good, though it does still make some basic mistakes or pronounces things a little odd sometimes. I like to use it to practice my listening. I'll ask it to give me typical every day sentences in Japanese and I'll repeat them back in my best English translation and have it rate how I did. It's great because if it uses a word you aren't familiar with, you can just ask it what it means. As a plus, you get a transcript when you're done to review so you can see the kanji used in each word and can look them up independently or add them to Anki. The only downside is you have to pay $20 a month and only get an hour per day. That said, $20 for 30 hour long tutor sessions is a steal.
@Dreamlet14 күн бұрын
I actually literally learned all this like a few days ago haha. The advanced voice mode is definitely incredible. I really hope they give more access for free users in the future. If I didn't already get to talk to native speakers, I would definitely consider the $20 a month for the 1 hour of daily conversation practice.
