Tangential to Gladwell's description of elbow surgery for baseball pitchers (at 30:44), I long wondered why many people silhouette consider it "cheating" to get breast implants, but who have no objection whatsoever to padded bras (or for that matter, other cosmetic enhancements such as makeup, hair dye, etc) eventually occurred to me that compared to other enhancement methods, breast augmentation surgery is financially prohibitive for many people.

I think Dr. Pinker does an outstanding job at balancing two ideas which need not stand in tension which each other. 1. By all metrics sane people care about, things are better than they have ever been before. We live far longer, more peaceful, kind, informed and yes fulfilling lives than our ancestors. By a metaphorical mile. This is not discounting the pandemic which science has never produced a faster and more effective response to. Humanity has produced far worse responses to far worse pandemics as awful as this one has been. Genetic sequencing and a whole line of novel effective vaccines etc are far superior to witch trials etc in the context of universal ignorance to germ theory. Humanity has coped and over come far worse. 2. In the context of the remarkable amount human progress and well-being achieved , the current state of affairs is unacceptable and further progress related to old and novel problems and pathologies must be achieved. I agree with Dr. Pinker having some rational confidence we can build a better world is prerequisite to doing so at level of society and the individual. As a psychotherapist trained in clinical psychology, I submit that having rational confidence or what I like to call Evidence Based Optimism about yourself, others and the world writ large is a critical component of human health and flourishing. Appreciate you Dr. Pinker All the Best, Matthew Velissaris, MA, LPC

No real content. Only empty big words. The extreme idea of decentralization will cause educational gap between rich and poor communities. Nothing about reform of curriculum to adapt to modern society is mentioned.

Canada's equivalent intellectual is Chrystia Freeland, now Foreign Affairs Minister. Anne Applebaum's husband, Radoslaw Sikorski, was Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs for a number of years after 2007. The Putinist restoration of illiberal authoritarianism in Russia is now in somewhat earlier stages in Hungary and Poland. As for the Communist period, resistance was culturally and religiously based, in Poland's case reinforced by its long history of resistance to assimilation by Russia, Austria and Prussia form the late 18th century until 1918.

Wow that guys Ezra say's I was invited to a debate on a subject I knew nothing about (the oil sand) why was I not able to convince them? It had to do with not being to relate to Zoe? Really...? Maybe it had to do with the fact that you had no knowledge of the subject? And still don't?

That first McGill student 49:23 asks a very important question. It is central to the reason many young people do not vote. If you are away at university or college you have never resided in any place for more than 6 months when an election comes around. So, we are essentially training our 18-25 year old voters not to vote. Would have been nice had Pierre Poilievre remedied this in his so called 'Fair Elections Act. Elizabeth May, if Sam had used a Federal Election example, instead, what would you have responded? This is a crucial question if we want to enfranchise young voters and train them to be good voting citizens of this country.
