I've been using linux for like 4-5 years (Kubuntu) Gotta say the amount of time to craft a proper media workflow on linux is just pure abomination, compare to having Windows installed and took like 1 or 2 hours to remove stuff that you don't use. They just don't have time to deal with a myraid of hidden either compatibility issues or something randomly missing.

Such a small percentage of the general population uses Linux, there’s no reason to believe that the percentage would be any higher for regular content creators.

It’s because only 2% of desktop pc are running Linux, it’s not that hard to work out why you don’t see it very much. I also believe you’re the only person in 2025 who can call Macs under powered.

Some of the setup issues you point, that do take, are related to the choice of distro, and desktop environment and wanting to customize your experience a lot. If you use a distro that is created to provide a more out-of-the-box experience, and you don't spend time tweaking stuff for style and non-real productivity gain, that usually disappears unless you have a relatively uncommon hardware setup, that might require more attention. The cultural issue, and the change of applications, having to adapt and learn new workflows are indeed a very reasonable and valid arguments. People are just way more patient, and forgiven towards what is comfortable and known by them.

At the end of the day it's just not as easy to use - a lot of software is hard to install or plain unavailable for Linux. Even webcams aren't always plug and play - you usually have to mess around in the OBS settings to get them to work. Sure, it's possible, but I think it's unrealistic to think that less technical users will go through all of that when they can get mostly what they want from windows.

I have a Linux (I use Arch by the way) Laptop and a Windows 10 Desktop, Linux for gaming/content creators is almost there but the biggest limiter is the refusal of large industry standard software producers to port i.e. Photoshop, Premiere, etc. That's not to say there isn't industry standard software for Linux but it's definitely more on the side of development software as opposed to creative software suites

Non-tech people just want something that works. Windows is preinstalled and it works. It's really just that simple most of the time.

When I play games on my pc I do have a dual boot because after a certain windows 10 update all of my drivers stopped working properly. Whenever I play with friends or steam it’s on Ubuntu. Idk how it works but driver updates take a moment and everything just works.

Windows is better than Linux for gaming that's why. Don't get me wrong there are great things about Linux, it uses less resources, it respects your privacy, it even has been making progress towards app and game compatibility but windows works 99% of the time on games. Linux works 90% of the time but even that 90% requires you pasting commands in a terminal. Let's be honest there is a sizable amount of gamers are on console because even windows is too complicated to them. But if you just use Linux for browsing the web or using a few apps you know works, Linux is better. I use Linux on laptops because I don't game on them.

Because it sucks. Recently I wanted to be open-minded and thought of using Linux, so I prepared one of my hard drives by formatting it to exFat, because Linux users were foaming in their mouths that NTFS is very unstable on Linux. But when I decided to restart my PC, my BIOS just didn't want to go past the splash screen unless I unplugged that one hard drive. Yes, my motherboard is very old but people say that Linux is friendly with old hardware. What I'm saying that even to install Linux you have to do something that is hard to prepare for, as I have a lot of hard drives with important files on NTFS with nowhere to back them up to. So I gave up, since all what people say about "Windows is resource hungry" is a dumb gatekeeping, since we have debloaters for that one reason. Oh, also to make some people angry let me mention I use Win11 on unsupported 2011-2014 hardware and I like it and have no issues with it (except for a webcam driver but we're talking about essential hardware here).

The problem with Linux (for a lot of people) is a lack of support from companies, mainly Nvidia (they've been getting better but it's far from great) and productivity/professional software companies (Autodesk, Adobe, etc.). Linux is perfectly useable and easy for general computing (browsing, word processing, etc.) with a distro like Mint. Gaming is mostly there (80+% of games work, only issue is anti-cheat/DRM, which ties back into the support issue). If Linux had more support then (IMO) there would be zero reason to not use it over windows.

I don't think it's as much a refusal as a lack of interest and time. Large content creators who follow schedules simply do not have the luxury to try out a new operating system for the sake of their craft. This may change over time as channels such as yours have influence, or if Windows messes up in such a catastrophic way that it would drive away a lot of people. For the big YT'ers, there is little incentive to move and experiment. There are of course a few people who will, but Linux still requires stepping out of your comfort zone, and if you don't have ample time to do that, why bother? I run Fedora myself, but currently I am running a Windows VM on-top of it as well for AutoHDR and a myriad of other AMD driver features. Gaming on Linux works fine, but I like my HDR (I am aware Plasma supports HDR, but AutoHDR which is a Win11 thing is something I do like to use).
