In the early 1980's I used to have a Citroen GS1200 Club with a semi auto gearbox … Same deal, gearstick and an electro static clutch. Great little car 🙂 In essence, little different to a twin splitter Eaton box in an Articulated unit, such as ERF or Foden.

I drove buses with Glasgow Corporation Transport for 18 months in 1973/74. Leyland Titans, Daimler CVG6's ( with pre-selecter gearbox), and Leyland Atlanteans. Some of the Atlanteans were fully auto, and many were semi-auto as here. The way of changing gear that you describe is how drivers were taught at the training school. In Glasgow, the timetables were tight, and the buses hard driven. So out on the routes, gearchanges were much faster. My standard practice was to move from gear to gear with one movement, no pause, but with a slight lifting of my foot on the accelerator to momentarily ease the load, and prevent a lurch as the next gear engaged. .

What would you say is better a full automatic or semi automatic 😊
@andrewpreston4127
@andrewpreston4127 Ай бұрын
@@thealbagalavanter9986 Six of one, half a doxen of the other really. I was young, 21, generally enjoyed driving anyway, and adapted easily to most types. With the semi-automatics, I felt more in control , as it was my choice as to when to change gear, whereas with the full auto, the bus decided. Not ideal, if when, for example doing a right hand turn from stationary ( at lights ), accelerating..., if a little too hard the auto would change up, unbalance the momentum, and momentarily you'd feel the bus beginning to run away from you. On the other hand, auto was good in heavy urban traffic, where you're moving along a few cars lengths at a time. Bit more relaxing. My favourite was the Daimler CVG6's, with pre-selecter gearboxes. You chose which gear you wanted next, and engaged it with a kick on the leftmost pedal at the moment of your choosing.

I know it’s wrong, but that’s fantastic. It may not be how they were trained, but the reality is that an awful lot of drivers drove semi-automatics like that. That’s how the buses were driven day-in, day-out, in service by guys who just wanted their shift to be over, with no regard for the machines they had to drive. These buses were everywhere so it was no big deal if the odd gearbox went a bit wonky. In fact it could mean a good hour or so reading the paper till a replacement arrived! No doubt the purists will be having to facilitate a Victorian fainting couch upon viewing this video, but those buses pushed on through that tough treatment.

Nicely done. I find that people over rev the engine as well. It makes matching the speeds a lot harder. I appreciate that some of these old girls need a bit more of a push, but the diesels of old had low down torque unlike the modern diesels that seem to be screaming just on tickover. First was just to get it rolling. No time at all and into second. Third was really the only long boot full if you were in a hurry. I do miss that sound though. No need for a rev counter or even maybe a speedo. You knew the speed of the shafts because you could hear them. 😆

Yep, that looks very familiar. I started as a Bus Driver in 1978 and at my garage all the buses (about 450) had a Wilson gearbox. Some was fairly easy to drive, in others it was almost impossible to get the gear changes right. The 1965-66 Ikarus with a Aluminium body (Volvo B58 chassie, Volvo THD100D engine) was definitely the worst, no-one could drive them with smooth gear changes, not even the instructors in the Driving School. Cheers / B.

As a bus driver for over 45 years, I make you right with the timing of the gear changing. Have you ever thought about steering the vehicle properly? I doubt that very much.
@CityMancBusGroup
@CityMancBusGroup 3 ай бұрын
@joansmith8215 well as a driver of nearly 30 years myself I know what I'm doing, the steering on this Bristol RE is very heavy so the easiest option for me is to cross my hands while turning, if your referring to using 1 hand at times then that's my personal choice and at no time was I not in control. I highly doubt you've been a perfect driver for 45 years. Besides this video was ment to be abit of fun.

@@CityMancBusGroupthere was an old Leyland training video which said to do the gear changes exactly as you did it. Only been driving 4 years, my understanding is crossing arms for steering is fine for quick steering changes at low speed, only naughty bit everyone has done sometimes is letting the steering wheel go and the steering centre itself, other than that good skills!
