Hi Russ , great to see your cobra build , I helped a friend build a Cobra sc427 with a 428ci from 1988 to 1990 then I built my own from 1991 to 1993 with a 351w with Dart heads and a mild cam , it got crashed in 2008 a person drove into me 🙄 and I upgraded and rebuilt it with a 408 and better heads and the efi crossram and a complete new body and got it back on the road in 2014 then I had a custom 9" rear arm fail and I crashed into some trees at 95kph in 2020 , 😡 it's not quite together , still battling with the insurance company , yeah ! full cover now near the end they don't want to pay to put it together ! We'll see . What I can tell you from my experience, 30 years of it , is don't get too envolved in one thing , I know cobras can be addictive, but if you do other hobbys don't drop them , my first passion was dirt bike riding , I've finally bought some classic bikes and a adventure bike , I am over the cobra now , tip for the day if you stack the front one day ,fit ½ a cobra body join below the doors , Cheers .

Great stories and events you have had there over the years, thanks for sharing. You’re much more of a mechanic than me, and I hope you get your pay out and back on the road soon. Cobras are addictive but I am always on the lookout for something else, and not necessarily a car. In fact I have even eyeballed a helicopter kit and 1/4 scale tank😆 I am a long time modeller and still do balsa wood kits with the kids. We will see what’s next once this one sells. Thanks for the rebuild tip too. Cheers

@russ.howell3 ай бұрын
Hello Wayne, yes with the AK standard switches etc you only have one speed option, so the high speed wires are used. If you use a three position switch then you could also use the other wires. Hope that helps, cheers

I know this video was a while ago, but out of curiosity how long does the application process take once you send off the form to apply for the IVA test?
@russ.howell4 ай бұрын
Hello, it does depend on time of year but from posting, I have always received communication within 3 weeks, and then been given a date within 3 weeks at my preferred test centre. I think this can depend on time of year and test centre location. I always chose the option to pay by credit card instead of cheque etc, so that I know I will receive a call. Thanks for watching.

Hi Russ, what was the total price approx for the build?
@russ.howell4 ай бұрын
Hello Oliver, my first build was around £58k I think, but subsequent have been more expensive. It’s quite difficult to do an excellent build with good paint and trim for much less than £63k’ish. However engine/gearbox choices could save huge amounts, plus a more standard paint job etc. I do a video break down of ALL costs/expenditure and I have a spreadsheet on www.russhowell.com

Hi Russ, love your videos. Just starting my build now and trying to save as much money as I can! Any idea how much fuel line you used in total? Cheers!
@russ.howell7 ай бұрын
Hello Robert, thanks for watching. I think I used 7 metres but that leaves no room for error. Suggest 8 or 9. You can use extra for fuel breather, air lines if using LS3. Plus bits to fuel pressure, fuel rail etc. I would concentrate on bigger savings. Use S&J autos instead of AK for wiper kit, lights etc. Buy your own fuel pump/filter from Merlin instead of AK etc. Fitting your own carpet is easy’ish instead of full trim package from Intatrim etc. Good luck.
@robertwhite3047 ай бұрын
@@russ.howell thanks ever so much! Yes using an LS3. Doing as much as I can myself. Rebuilding the diff, building the engine etc! Keeping it very fun indeed! Cheers for the advice on buying from other suppliers. Already started on that list 😀👍

Great to see yet another Cobra finished by you Russ, it looks really good. I am slowly getting there with mine, I had my first engine start recently but have to much fuel coming through on one side (or an air leak) so I am in process of sorting that out before moving on to finishing the brakes/clutch

Just a note about fitting windows with wind wings. Apparently it can be done. Fold wings forward. Open doors. slot in windows, and then when you close the doors the windows should miss the wind wing hinges. Not tried yet, but should all fit without having to remove everything... thanks to all those that emailed.

In the IVA video, would you explain how the brake test is done? I looked for a description but couldn't find anything on how y'all do it. I remember you talking about percentages but don't know how that's applied. Thanks for documenting this stuff. I doubt I'll ever see an AK Cobra in person but seeing the things you go through is fascinating.
@russ.howell11 ай бұрын
Thanks very much for watching Shawn. I link the exact details below in section 3.1, but basically they weigh the car and then put the car on rollers which rotate the wheels at set speeds. They then test brakes and the rollers sense the braking pressure etc and give a percentage of efficiency.
It may be too late but don't fit the 'soft' side vent rubbers before you get there - they blow off!

Russ Thanks for your last reply. I am impressed with your knowledge of these and the build approach you take on quality.Probably better than a factory built car as you take more time and care.Question, how have you managed to build 2 already.Do you do it for the pleasure, does it pay for itself or are you sponsored.I just saw one advertised at £65,000 which suggests a high quality product. Keep the videos coming Thanks Andy
@russ.howell11 ай бұрын
Appreciate your comments Andy. Yes, the builds are basically my hobby, an extension of model building as I needed something more technical to work on. I am definitely not sponsored, but would like to be 😀. The first Cobra was funded by early inheritance and sold. The next two I was approached and asked to build, so buyer funded. The fourth is using the money from first sale. So I hope to be able to keep rolling along. I am not really making any money, as I need quick sales, before my wife gives me other jobs to do…
@Paul-y2m5z11 ай бұрын
Hi Russ, If you are going with a roof you will need to invert the 'visor' fixings to allow the 'U' channel that comes with the roof to fit over the windscreen. You can also adjust the 'bow' in the visor by loosening the small grub screw underneath the clamp (but be careful they are very small and easy to strip).
@russ.howell11 ай бұрын
Thank you Paul, that’s good info. No roof on this one but series 2 car is coming back that has both. I’ll be sure to mention it when I fit them again. Thanks for watching, Russ
@andrewsproson141011 ай бұрын
Build is coming on well. My friend had a Dax Cobra which used to fill with water when the roof was down as it channeled rain past the windscreen in a torrent.I always wondered if the side screen design could be changed to throw the rain past, rather than having to move to Spain.
@russ.howell11 ай бұрын
I think moving to Spain is the best option.👍 Your right, water does get funnelled into places and I’ll be sure to use some sealant where possible, but would still be good to be able to direct it well away from car. Front hinging windows on the hard top do a better job. Thanks Russ

Another great video Russ. Hadn't heard of Morel or Focal before but sounds impressive. Wish I'd thought of speakers in the doors but too late now with the sprung pockets running the full length of the door. I'm sure you'll have sussed things out with the rear speakers, but if the baskets are deep, be aware of the roll hoop being fairly close to them. I managed with about 5mm clearance using 6.5" speakers.
@russ.howell Жыл бұрын
Thank you Drew. Yes was really surprised and hadn’t realised the roll bars and harness supports reduce the space. I have purchased two more of the same speakers and will mount on mdf rings. Speakers are awesome so will be happy with the sound. Could do a single woofer in the middle but spent enough. Thanks for watching, Russ

Another good video Russ. Loctite 577 is your friend when doing the 1/4" NPT fuel fittings. I also fitted a qurter turn ball valve very close to the fuel tank outlet to isolate the fuel if I ever want to check / clean the fuel filter as my filter is fitted prior to the pump.

Hi Russ, I purchased a set of Alpine SPG-17C2 2-Way Co-axial Speakers and mounted one behind each seat fairly high up in order to remain within the confines of the boot area. The hard top does need to be improved, although it’s made to fit many cobra models, so I guess not 100% on any of them. You can get a slightly better finish product but it costs more from XCS and GD perhaps. Once all completed though, they all come out the same.
