I've got some pet quail I keep indoors and one hen is sitting down inside a straw hut making a low, almost growling type call. She's been doing it for a few days now actually. A month ago she went through the hormone rage that comes with the end of breeding season, and is just now finishing up a light moulting period. Everything seems fine with her - she will come out of the hut and run around, even jump and skip and fly, she is eating just fine, everything seems ok, but she does spend a lot of time inside that hut and that call doesn't sound great. Before her hormonal changes she was the bottom of the pecking order and was extremely docile and gentle and I observed several times she would seek out other quail in the flock who needed help and try to help them. When the hen at the top of the pecking order was bullying the rooster and the rooster had to go hide himself, she would go over to him and sit with him to keep him company. When one my other hens got a gash on her underside, she was immediately there looking at it trying to preen the wounded spot. Just the loveliest hen ever. During the hormone changes she because very aggressive and I had to put her in an isolation cage several times when she got to be too much. Since the end of the hormone changes, she never went back to her previous personality, she seems almost dead inside, not kind and caring any more, but very selfish and stand-offish. If she finds some food outside of the food bowl (I toss dried bugs around all over the cage sometimes, or cracked corn or millet, so they can peck through the bedding for food in addition to their regular feed in a food bowl in a fixed location), she will peck at anybody who comes too near to it, she wants it all for herself and won't share it with anyone. If someone tries to enter her hut, she pecks at them until they leave. At least she will leave the others alone once they move away from her, so its not a serious issue at this point, but it is sad to see such a wonderfully lovely quail turn into such a cold-hearted quail :( And now she's making this odd call that has me a bit worried.

Snakes are a big predator of quail eggs as they swallow them whole and will eat all the eggs in a nest all at one time. My observation of quail in the wild after 41 years in the field as a Warden coincides with some of your statements. Just after sun down I was always amazed of my observations of seeing a covey of quail fly out from the brush-lines to seek the open tall grass fields to roost at night. I have seen many quail killed by high deer fences as the covey in horizonal flight cannot avoid the wire strands. In harsh winter months they eat a lot of fresh/new green grass sprouts, as seeds and insects are less plentiful. I always wanted to experiment with planting winter rye grass in strips of new disked up soil adjacent to tall grass pasture areas, just to see if that would be of benefit. It would be the fastest way to provide grass sprouts in South Texas sandy soils. Having enough food in winter is crucial. After a hard freeze the green grass sprouts are gone and so is their winter feed if there are no seeds readily available.

As a falconer using terriers for rabbits and squirrels, I've seen quail hide from hawks in chipmunk holes. Also, as a falconer and amateur wildlife biologist it is clear that the competition for survival between raptors dying of starvation or quail dying of raptor predation is very close. Truly there is no such thing as any hawk that can catch every prey individual on the menu. The strongest and smartest prey specimens are the refinement of their gene pool, the refinement of their species and populations.

We've have a 1 acre pond that has existed for 80 years. Two years ago an invasive plant started growing on all edges of the pond. It's growing toward the center. It appears to be Water Primrose! I would guess it takes up about 25% of the pond surface. It's almost impossible to fish from the bank anymore. Since the pond has been weed free for 89 years, I assume something in the environment has changed. We leased our land to a cattle farmer. He was not authorized to plant any crop but he ended up planting a hay field and I suspect that he fertilized, which caused our issue. That's the only thing I can think of anyway. I haven't researched how to get rid of it yet but I know how to get rid of the guy leasing the land.
