I think it's wrong to call this a 'master-class'. It does not bring out subtle differences between the older and younger horn player. Rather, it just demonstrates that the younger player has a kind of 'constipated' sound (the same sound that is made by many many horn players) whereas the older player has a magnificent 'Dennis Brain' kind of sound (barvo!), which for some reason most horn players find impossible to achieve. (One way to move in the 'Dennis Brain' direction is to not stuff one's hand so far up the bell, in my opinion. But some will say, "Oh no! Then you can't control intonation." Yeah, yeah, whatever.)

Your comment doesn't make any sense. First of all, Dennis Brain could easily play better than anyone in that room by the time he was 17, furthermore you should actually try and take a look at Dennis Brain's hand position, since he actually played quite covered himself.. This is certainly a master class as the "master" is Jorg Bruckner & the student is in a class setting performing/learning in front of other students (i.e. a class). You really should consider rethinking what you've posted as it comes across as highly uneducated & baseless.

Decía Herbert von Karajan que tuvo intención de hacer la 8 de Shostakovich ( o era la sexta?) pero, al oír lo que había realizado Mravinski, no se veía capaz de añadir nada más. Desconozco si el maestro salzburgués se interesó por la Francesca de Remini, obra que no hizo nunca; quizá hubiese dicho lo mismo. Decir Francesca es decir Yevgueni.

Соло кларнета ("рассказ Франчески") вышло недостаточно нежным и плавным, даже грубоватым. На 9:08 видно, как Мравинский движениями пальцев просит придать мягкости, а после того, как манера исполнения не изменилась, недовольно вздыхает (9:17).

Довольно интересный фрагмент появляется в 33:54. Думаю Тосканини решил немного разбавить выступление своей филармонии, другими характерными кадрами из жизни современного общества.

This is a superb horn player. I'm talking Dennis Brain territory. (As a young horn player, I suspect I was not alone in almost wearing out my copies of Dennis Brain playing the Strauss and Mozart horn concertos). His style seems to me to be a somewhat lighter touch than many others and I think that suits this concerto very well. Alas, I eventually went over to the "dark side" - the trumpet. But I had one technical glitch that I might have heard in several of Mr. Gruber's performances. When making a large downward interval playing legato, he doesn't seem to go straight to the lower note but you briefly hear something else along the way. Sort of sliding into the note. At the level he is playing, I suspect this is deliberate and perhaps just the style he wants to play. My problem, on the trumpet, was in the opposite direction. I couldn't slur a big interval up with hitting something in between and I once had a frustrated teacher keep telling me "THINK of the note you are about to play and ONLY that note."

Contrast this understated style with Fedoseyev, Ashkenazy or Bernstein. Clearly the conductor's gyrations are merely for the benefit of the audience; lack of them here still produces an electrifying and compelling performance.

So little movement at places where other conductors would go crazy, yet so much detail at places where most listeners would not think there is anything special going on! The orchestra is surely well rehearsed. Students of conducting must love the total focus on Mravinsky!
