Worked for hourly wages as a teenager at various places. Baskin Robbins was my favorite but on "chill" days, the manager would send one of us home early! Can't make money if you aren't actually AT work. Lots of customers makes the time go faster too. It's boring sitting around with no customers.

Coincidentally, my first part-time job (not counting delivering newspapers and washing dishes for $1 an hour under-the-table) was also at Baskin Robbins. And my manager had the same mentality when it came to sending someone home when business was 'chill'. No one wanted to be sent home, so we all tried to find 'busy work' during slow times to show him that we deserved to stay.

Back in the late 70's, I got my first job as a bag boy at Albertson's in Dallas...I worked hard, as if my life depended on it...there where those that didn't, and they were quickly let go...I applied this ethic to every job I had...even when I joined the Air Force...even there, slackers were common...but they didn't survive...I served for 27 years, and upon retirement, was offered a DoD position, which I still have today...It is all about working hard...NOT "Chillin'"...this is why I worry about the future...

You are paid to do a job, if you do your job well, then you might receive praise, if you are average, not expect praise. What happened to this generation, was it the parents, the schools, something went seriously wrong with their mentality towards life and this will cause them a lot problems as they face conflict and troubles - they won’t be able to deal with it. Surely the approach should be about how to give them a reality check on what work and life is about, not retrain managers about how to suck up to snowflakes, with insecure egos. No wonder the world is turning into a shit storm

Let's look past this entitled punk, who probably deserves to be fired, for a minute and think about how we compensate employees. A smart business gives them some skin in the game. I do NOT think burger flippers "deserve" $15 an hour "just because." But if we want motivated workers, why not have monthly bonuses based on increased sales? Give the Trevors of the world a sense of why it is good for the restaurant to be packed and bad to be "chill." How about bonuses when complaints are down and profits are up?

I was a manager in the deli dept in a grocery store, paid hourly. They kept trying to get me to go on salery, saying during the slow times it work out. I said "do I look stupid, my job as a manager is too send home the hourly employees when we are slow and work their shift, so I'd still be here working but making less money". If I were to go salary I'd lose all that over time during our peak times of the year. Only the company would be saving money. Besides there is law saying one can't work more than 53 hours on salary, in my state anyway, without being compensated for any over 53. My mom was a book keeper which included payroll so she had to know the labor laws and had to inform the employer of this fact many times.

So much to unpack here!!! So when it's " people packed" that is the success of the employees, and not ownership or franchisee. If that's the case then where are the raises, benefits, bonuses, etc. Go with this speakers advice and you will have employee struggles forever. Learn, respect, appreciate, and fairly compensate your employees in any setting and you will see the benefits. Accountability goes both ways.

Yeah, I'm all for employees following the rules, showing up on time, dress codes, etc. but saying that students and young people are being entitled brats for asking to be paid fairly or living wages is fucked up. Just because you were too scared to ask for fair wages back in the old days and willingly broke your back for peanuts doesn't mean I have to. I'm tired of the old song and dance of the employer demanding all these things, taking the majority of wages that THE WORKER HAS MADE FOR THEM and calling them entitled when they're brave enough to ask to be paid fairly. (Which shouldn't even be considered brave or a thing people have to do in a civilized society. But the US is more of a capitalistic society so there you go.) You want me to dedicate the majority of my time and life working for you? You want me to do the best job possible? Then pay me. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. If this was a relationship between two people, it would immediately be labled as abusive, dysfunctional and one sided.

Being paid by the hour encourages performing minimally as long as possible. Working salary encourages working quickly so a person can “chill.” It’s the same concept. Pay people for the success of the job(s) they perform and the hourly/salary rate goes out the window. It’s just hard to quantify in most roles.

The best boss I ever had took note of the fact that one hand washes another. It was a salary job with bonus for sales over a set quota, the store was a hobby, crafts and fabric store , I was a 19 yo framing carpenter who needed time to heal from surgery. Despite the fact that most of the customers were middle aged women I loved the job. The salary was half or less what I made pounding nails, but by being willing to meet or exceed customer expectations my bonuses more than made up the difference.

How does it happen that an entire generation of people are described as having the same characteristics? How can we say, ''millennials'' do this, or millennials do that? What makes them that way collectively? Why are we being cultivated to accept this as normal? Shouldn't we work to correcting this misconduct in our children? The speaker here says you have to learn to deal with them because they are 19% of the work force. If they are 19% of the work force but they can't even do1% of the work, what's the point?

I'd rather be paid by the hour... I'm "Gen-X". I like the idea that if I work more than 40 hours that I will still get paid and paid more because of OT. I work retail. I really don't think Trevor's "chill" statement means no customers or doing nothing. What he means is a "steady busy" where he and his team can keep up with the amount of work with the staff and other resources they have (prep area and equipment). This is where incentives, profit sharing, and other bonus options come into play... It makes the crazy times worth it because they know they will get at least some extra compensation for it.
