Thanks Daniel! I have 2 lawn boy mowers still but they never get used anymore. I run a lawn service and we needed more reliable and heavy duty equipment that is easy to get parts and doesn’t need mixed gas. I would like to still make some videos on them still but I haven’t worked on one in almost a year.

I have heard people have a lot of problems where they take off the guard on a trimmer and let the line out really far and it ends up burning up the motor because it's not running a high enough RPM and it's too much of a load they do better at a higher RPM and less load

I have 2016 HRX217. It was working fine. But after 8 years I took out both of the drain plugs using an allen wrench. The fluid was dirty. I tipped motor on it’s side and put new hydrostatic fluid in. but was not Honda fluid. The transmission would pull the mower forward but not as well as before. To refill the transmission, do you have to remove it and get the large round cover off to refill it? The sad thing is that the mower was working fine until I drained the dirty fluid out. The transmission will not pull forward now at all? Do I need to use the Honda fluid? Can I refill using the drain plugs or will I have to remove the transmission?
@lawnboyR
@lawnboyR Ай бұрын
Sorry for the late replay. Ok so you need to use OEM fluid, I have seen others try to use non oem fluid with no success either. I got mine off eBay. To do the job properly I would recommend pulling the transmission and taking off the round cover, there is a gasket under neath that can be reused. Fill it up to the top and the spin the input pulley either by hand or with a drill. More will get sucked in, then top off again and spin once more. You should be good to go after that. Also once everything is out back be sure to adjust your speed adjust cable as they often stretch and you may find you can not go to top speed.

You seem to know a lot about this model Lawnboy, I have the same one an R-8237 s/n 9672811. The only difference is the brass hex nut on top of the carb. My problem is low RPM on the normal setting and the weird thing about it is when I shut off the gas flow the RPM increases substantially (to what it should be) for about 30 seconds until the gas runs out. Any idea thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated. I followed your video instructions on setting the vain tension but it didn’t fix the problem. I have broken down the carb completely and cleaned it as well as the exhaust ports. Also cleaned and re-gapped the coil. It starts in 3 pulls.
@lawnboyR

Very sorry for the late reply, I have seen this before and the issue is actually your float, and needle and seat. The problem is the float is not closing fully and the pressure from the tank is causing the engine to run rich. First thing I would do is adjust the float. Turn the carb upside down and take off the bowl, using 2 pairs of pliers bend the float up. This will cause the float to be lower in the gas level causing the float to close the needle fully. If that does not work replace the needle and seat. Usually just adjusting the float will work.

Actually, the easiest way to do this is to turn the engine until the piston is just below the ports. Then you can easily clean the ports without worrying about damaging the piston skirt. For any carbon that does fall down into the cylinder, just set the mower upright, remove the spark plug and blow into the cylinder with an air hose. Any carbon in the cylinder will be blown back out the exhaust ports.

My 10247 runs way better on a Chinese carburetor. Suttle differences like the jet and nozzle are one piece unlike the lawnboy carburetor. It didn't come with a fuel filter in it either. I like oem parts and prefer over aftermarket, but this mower would not run right with oem carb. It would sputter, and not idle correctly. I tried changing the pilot jet messed around with govenor, and it refuses to run right. So the Chinese carburetor is fine for now.

I have a 1990s 10515. Love it. All 4 wheels were wobbly. The wheel bushings get worn out causing wobble. Wheel wobble is unacceptable on rear wheels because it will ruin the self propel gears. Partstree does not sell new bushings. I bought some steel spacers at Lowes and hacksawed to correct length. Problem solved. I bought spacers 1/2" ID x 5/8" OD x 1.5" long and cut to length, about 5/8". Used a file to file down rough edge after cut. They fit perfectly inside the wheels and eliminated wobble.

I have this model. Wheels stopped turning in all gears. After hours of diagnosis I finally traced the problem. The gearbox's left bushing for the driveshaft is worn and the bushing's hole is enlarged about 1/4", allowing the gearbox to move and therefore the gears to disengage. I don't know why the bushing has so much wear; possibly the shaft has rust where it enters the gearbox. Something to keep in mind during maintenance.

@@lawnboyR Just noticed something else looking at parts diagram: there's a felt washer and lock washer around the driveshaft on left wheel side, against the gearbox. (Right side at 3:40 of video, washers are not visible.). I believe this is to keep crud out of the gearbox. My felt washer was severely worn so this is probably what caused my bushing to wear out causing loss of gears. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I NEVER maintained or even looked at my transmission before I had problems.
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 Жыл бұрын
Update: upon disassembly I noticed one of the two key shifts was broken. The key shifts are moved by the yoke; they engage with each gear and they are what give the "click" feeling when you shift into each gear. Without them the gears can't turn the wheels.
@mattfoley6082
@mattfoley6082 11 ай бұрын
Update: I replaced the one gearbox bushing (left side) and the one key shift in the gearbox. Success! I now have all 3 gears again! Now my problem is my wheels are all wobbly because the center holes are worn. New 8" rear wheels part #92-1042 are over $60 each! I can't justify that expense. Any suggestions for repairing or cheaper replacements?
@mattfoley6082

Update: The wheels centers have bushings. I went to Lowes and bought steel spacers. 1/2" ID x 5/8" OD by 1.5" long. I cut them to length and filed. They fit perfectly inside the wheels and around the bolt. No more wheel wobble.

Hey, i saw you just commented recently to a comment so hopefully youll be able to see this. Whats the difference between this transaction and the ones on the other HRX mowers? Which would you recommend? Cost to fix and or longevity. Thanks in advance.
@lawnboyR
@lawnboyR Жыл бұрын
This is the one on the HRX, but it is only on the cruise control models… so the most expensive one… all the other hands have a traditional lawn mower transmission where the belt acts as a clutch. I think both are a great option, and honestly the traditional is less complicated. Although I really like the hydro one like this. They also use the hydro on the commercial models, but it is not the same thing and is slightly heavier ditty and bigger. Also has a dip stick on it. I would pick which ever one you can aford and get the features you want. Hope this helps!

Is the select drive belt? Or are they both the same? No right? Im only looking at getting an HRX217 but the Self Propelled confuses me. @lawnboyR

@@Dan-zs4rk yes the select drive models use the belt as the clutch. The hydro is the hydrostatic transmission they are only on those 2 models because it is the better transmission.
