Ready to elevate your pottery skills? Here's a step-by-step guide to throwing a vase on the wheel, from centering the clay to adding intricate surface textures that make your glaze pop! 1. Start by centering 2.6kgs of clay on the wheel-this is the foundation for your vase. Take your time to ensure the clay is perfectly centered before moving on. 2. Begin pulling up the walls, maintaining even pressure to create a uniform height. Use a rubber rib to smooth and straighten the outside, giving your vase a clean, sleek form. 3. For the final finishing, switch to a steel rib to refine the shape and achieve that professional finish. 4. Add character to your vase by using a ball cake decoration tool to create a divot pattern on the outside of the wall. This ununiform pattern will interact beautifully with the glaze, creating dynamic highs and lows that highlight the texture. 5. Allow your vase to dry slowly over 24-48 hours under a plastic bag. This gradual drying process helps prevent cracks and ensures even drying. 6. Once the vase is leather-hard, it's time to trim the base. Carefully trim away excess clay to create a smooth foot ring, giving your vase a stable and refined finish. 7. Add a root ring with a trimming tool to complete the base, giving your piece a unique and professional touch. 🌟 Explore our creative journey and discover more pottery secrets in our reels. Whether you're just starting or looking to refine your skills, there's something here for every ceramic enthusiast. Follow, like, and share to keep the pottery love alive! I tried a technique recently by adding a continuous clay coil to the outside, then adding some texture. Here’s how it turned out! **Step-by-Step Tips:** (once you’ve your thrown your piece) 1. **Prepare the Surface:** - Score the surface of your thrown piece lightly before applying the coil. This helps it stick better. 2. **Apply the Coil:** - Gently press the clay coil onto the scored surface. - Use a wooden tool (like a wooden thumb) to pinch and secure the edges of the coil to the wall, similar to coil building. 3. **Rest Your Pot:** - Let your thrown pot rest for about 10 minutes before adding the coil. This allows the walls to harden slightly and support the extra weight. You can then add some texture by using the same thumb tool you used before. This will allow you to add highlights to your base glaze ash shown with this beautiful pot 4. **Slow Drying:** - Dry your piece as slowly as possible. Use a plastic bag to slow down the drying time, ensuring even moisture distribution and minimizing the risk of cracking, especially with varying wall thickness. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! We’re here to help with your glazing or throwing process! A like or share would also be greatly appreciated as it helps us keep creating these videos! 🤗

I’ll show you how to make a moon vase on the pottery wheel! ✨🎨 1. Throw to Height: Center the clay on the wheel head and pull it up to the desired height for the moon vase shape, ensuring even thickness throughout the walls. Then, Use your hands to shape the vase into a rounded form, with a wider base tapering gradually towards the neck. 2. Maintain Wall Thickness: As you shape the vase, be mindful to maintain consistent wall thickness, especially around the curved indentation. You don’t want to be too vigorous with the finishing sponge either! 3. Shape Adjustment: As needed, use a damp sponge to refine the shape from both the inside and outside, paying attention to smooth transitions and curves. 4. Support Top Lip: To prevent distortion of the vase’s rim, support it with your fingers while shaping the rest of the opening, you want to use your fingers to help shape and push in the next to create a ruffled look. Making sure to keep both hands fairly even to help keep the symmetry of the vase. 5. Patience in Drying: Cover the completed vase with plastic to slow down the drying process, reducing the risk of cracking. Allow it to dry slowly for 24 to 48 hours before trimming the base, then continue to dry it slowly under plastic for a couple of weeks. 6. Start your glazing!! We used our whacky wombat glaze but you can use your own glaze that suits the clay body you work with. Once glazed, wait for around 12 hours for the bisque to dry before putting it in the kiln Hope you enjoyed this post and follow, like, and share to spread the pottery love! Do you make your templates? What is the trick to know they're going to measure up and work properly
@tmcpotteryaustralia
@tmcpotteryaustralia Ай бұрын
We make our own templates out of plastic. I just measure the plaster mould that I would like to use from one side to the other and cut the circle to that size. If I’m making a bottle I draw on a sheet of paper first cut it out and fold it in and check it’s going to all fit together you can make it whatever size you’d like thank you for all your comments and have a great night 🤗🥰🤗🤗

Creating a Maximalism Art Vase: A Quick Guide . 1. Start by cutting out the clay pieces using pre-cut templates and bevel the edges for smooth joins later. 2. Cut two identical squares from your clay, ensuring they’re uniform in size. 3. Place two squares on what will be your front section of vase score and slip and stamp your favourite designs onto them. 4. Bring the front, the sides and base together, score and slip! And pinch the seams. 5. Use a wooden tool to compress the seams, smooth out any irregularities with a rubber kidney. 6. Attach coils to the interior joins with a wooden tool to form strong bonds. 7. Join up the shoulder of the vase, by first scoring and applying slip before closing it up. 8. Cut a hole in the vase’s shoulder using a cookie cutter and a clay knife. 9. Craft the neck from a strip of clay, adjusting it to your desired length. Score and slip. 10. Attach the neck to the vase, refining the join with a wooden tool and a damp finger. 11. Add another clay strip on top of the vase, carve out a hole, and secure. . Allow the vase to dry thoroughly, then bisque fire it before glazing for an exquisite finish. .

Here’s a guide to my process: Materials needed: -2-3kgs of clay -Small wooden sculpting tool -Wooden pottery comb or scorer -Trimming Tools -Glazes (2x or more) 1. **Throwing the Vase:** I start by throwing the vase on the pottery wheel, brining it to the desired form. 2. **Adding Coils:** Once the basic shape is formed, I add coils to the outside. To attach them securely, I use a wooden tool. This tool not only helps in attaching the coils but also adds texture, enhancing the vase’s design. Remember, pinching the coils onto the pot with the wooden tool allows the clay particles to bond together, giving you a stronger connection. 3. **Using Slip or Scoring:** You can use a bit of slip on the outside of the vase before attaching the coils. Slip acts as a glue, ensuring a firm attachment. Alternatively, you can score the vase, creating a rough surface for better adhesion. If the vase is still wet. Slip will not be needed 4. **Drying:** After throwing and trimming. You’ll need to dry the vase. This step is crucial. Due to the varying thicknesses created by the coils, it’s important to slow down the drying process. Cover the vase with a plastic bag to regulate the moisture. If you notice that the top part of the vase is drying faster than the base, lightly spray it with a water gun to maintain even drying. 5. **Bisque Firing and Glazing:** After the vase has dried completely, it goes into the bisque kiln for its first firing. This process hardens the clay, making it ready for glazing. I then apply the base glaze to the vase. To highlight the coils and add depth to the design, I use a second cover glaze specifically on the coils. This additional glaze not only separates the coils visually from the base glaze but also enhances the overall aesthetic of the vase. This can be done with a brush or slip trailer. What took the most amount of time was all the drying as well as getting the handles and leaf decorations ready. I wanted to put some hand built techniques into a wheel thrown vase to bring the two genres together, so to speak. Due to us being in winter at the moment, it takes a long time for the clay to dry out, please create a challenge when you are putting together of ours like this due to the fact that everything is so damp and structural integrity is not very good. This is when a heat gun comes in handy, it allows you to enjoy pieces off so that you can assemble it all in the one day. If there was a little more time, I would probably try all these out naturally and assemble them later on for the purpose of the video. I decided to do it in one night. When it comes to applying any decoration to your vars, you want the thickness of the decoration to be relatively the same as the thickness of the wall of your vase this will mean that your piece won't crack during the drying process Another thing I will mention. when you create either the handles or the slab of decorate your vars with, make sure to run a very thin metal rib or wire through the piece before removing it from the bat. if it is still a little too soft you can use a heat gun to stiffen up the clay Don't forget to score and slip everything you attached to the bars as this will help create a bond that will endure the bisque firing If you have any more questions please feel free to comment below. If you did find this video enjoyable please consider sharing it to your story to help spread this video to anyone who may find it useful or inspiring. This helps us create more videos like this which we always enjoy doing 🤗 Thank you and have a wonderful weekend as well ❤️

From a lump of clay to a completely glazed vase. Here are some tips to how you can throw your own!!! 1. Prepare Your Clay: Start by wedging your clay thoroughly to remove any air bubbles. This ensures a consistent texture that’s perfect for throwing. 2. Center the Clay and Create an Opening: Place your clay on the wheel and center it, keeping your elbows close to your body for stability. Open the center of the clay, forming the foundation for pulling up the walls. 3. Raise and Shape the Vase Walls: Gradually pull up the walls of the vase, shaping it to your desired height and curve from the inside. Be careful not to thin the walls too much. 4. Smooth the Outer Wall: Use a rib or sponge to carefully smooth and refine the outer wall, ensuring it’s even and free of imperfections. 5. Add a Wiggle Pattern: Use a large-faced pottery shaping tool or a popsicle stick to add an eye-catching wiggle pattern to the vase. This decorative touch will make your piece truly unique. 6. Slow Dry and Bisque Fire: Place the vase under a plastic bag and let it dry slowly for about two weeks to minimize the risk of cracks. Then, fire the vase to bisque temperature in your kiln to strengthen it for glazing. 7. Glazing: Finish your vase with your favorite glaze. Experiment with techniques like slip trailing, dipping, or pouring to achieve different effects. Once complete, you’ll have a beautiful piece of art to cherish or gift to a loved one. Enjoy the process and happy potting! If you found this helpful, please like and share to spread the pottery love! 💖✨ Tag anyone who might be interested in learning this technique! For today’s post, we’re gonna be running through how I make this little retro inspired vase! Some important notes is to make sure you have enough clay to make such a vase. I start off with roughly round 2 kg of clay, This gives you plenty of clay to work with and allow you to create a fairly thick wall for shaping. When it comes to the trimming later on, make sure you secure properly with a couple of lumps of clay on the bat and also make sure to trim a fair amount of clay from the base to make sure it’s nice and light when holding it I good tips is to tap the bottom of the bars when you’re trimming and listen for a noticeable change in the tone that you get from the vase, when you initially start it will have a very dull thud to the piece, you’ll know you’re getting to the right thickness when you start to hear a more vibrant echo noise from the base when tapping it It’s hard to explain it on text, but possibly I’ll create a video on it one day in the future If you have any more questions, please feel free to comment below and we will do our best to answer them 🤗🤗

"Unlock Your Inner Artist: Clay” . Dive into the enchanting world of pottery as we guide you through the steps to create a stunning cylinder vase, adorned with captivating swirl patterns. . Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Ball Vase . 1. Prepare Your Clay: Roll out your clay to an even 8mm thickness, ensuring it's pliable and ready for shaping. 2. Shape the Vase Body: Using a template, cut out a large piece of clay for the vase body. Wrap this around a cylindrical mould to achieve the desired shape. 3. Seamless Join: Use a bevel tool to cut the seam. Score, slip, and join the clay carefully to form a seamless vase body. 4. Refine the Shape: Once the clay has dried sufficiently, remove the mould. Smooth out any imperfections at the join using clay tools. 5. Create the Base: Cut a base from another sheet of clay. Score, slip, and attach it to the vase body to ensure stability. 6. Add a Foot Ring: Cut a circle of clay using cookie cutters. Score, slip, and attach it securely to the base. 7. Polish the Vase: Refine the foot ring and smooth all surfaces using clay tools for a flawless finish. 8. Decorate with Patterns: Unleash your creativity by using a ball tool to carve intricate patterns and designs into the vase body. I often think, "oh wow Aidan, how awesome 💜 I think I could do that" then I remember how ham fisted with clumsiness I am and that I am not gifted with your delicate touch & patient skills! I will be sticking with attempting the more solid slab built pottery pieces me thinks 😂 AMAZING work as always & great tute, Aidan 🥰✌🏻🌟 RaeVyn 💜🌺🖤
