Great video. Think about getting your eyes lazered. It was one of the best things i did and made my hunting so much more enjoyable, especially as I struggled with contacts, dirty fingers etc. Mates used to leave me behind still trying to put in contacts and glasses were terrible to wear in the rain.

I was actually just talking about this yesterday with a mate. I'm really keen to do it and I'm looking to get it done while I'm back up north over summer. Must have been so nice to not muck around with contacts or glasses anymore. Cheers 👍

I did the big lap over 2 years in Aussie in a big off road 23ft van. Only had 2 300watt solars and could go weeks off grid. Full toilet or water was usually the main reason to go to civilisation. I guess more sun there. Couldn’t run the aircon off grid but met some who could.
@SSRhys24 күн бұрын
Sounds like an awesome couple of years! Yeah the sun in the South Island here over winter / early spring sits low for alot of the day, so there's not a good angle for solar charging other than a few main hours of the day. I also use a bit of power some days with charging laptops and film gear - not to mention the coffee machine!
@gmsinding176625 күн бұрын
what batteries are you running AGM or lithium. I run lithium because u can run them to 25%. I think AGM can should be run to no less than 50%. shame about the deer..............thats hunting 4u. good set u have......thanks for the video

Did you see the part of the video where I was quite self sufficient? 👀 That's where the name came from.

@ quite? No quite😂 self sufficient is when you get no outside input - without money, diesel and petrol your a goner.

900w of solar and you need a generator? What kind of batteries and capacity do you have?
@SSRhys27 күн бұрын
My power issues were the result of a faulty battery. I have 250ah lithium. Hardly use the generator now with my new batteries but is still a valuable back up. Could certainly do with more storage capacity though.
@EastCoastMotors26 күн бұрын
@@SSRhys ahh.. yeah I'd aim for another 2x 250ah of the same brand/model you already have. If your fridge is LPG, cooking is diesel or LPG you should never have any issues even in the winter.
@SSRhys26 күн бұрын
Unfortunately the fridge is power only so sucks a bit of power. I'll probably aim to be between 400-600ah before next winter.

Hi Rhys, If you’re running a 3 way fridge and using battery power to run it you will drain your batteries quickly, only run a 3 way fridge on battery if you have a way of connecting it to the Toyota when it’s running. Assuming you have a 3 way fridge and not a compressor fridge.
@SSRhysАй бұрын
It's not a 3 way unfortunately, so always runs on power.

nice video mate, epic rainbow out of the canals. It's def a nice opportunity to be able to pick up some work you can do from the caravan, means the $$$ can still keep coming in. For us it's been a game changer having the wife work from the caravan, otherwise it's meant the whole family stops while i do some work. nice to have the flexibility though which is what we've found, say yes to what works for us.

Hope you got it sorted in Ch Ch.

Great video of you adventure on the road. I’ve just started out traveling in the South Island, fourth week and loving it so far, wish I’d done it years ago. I’ve set up a submersible pump as you have to top up my onboard tank and bought a rollaway grey water for when my grey tank is full, saves moving on when I’m not ready to. A generator will be good in the winter months, I have also wired the car/van to charge the batteries when traveling or if parked up and batteries go flat, which could save you buying a generator, I have both options. I have subscribe and will watch with interest.
@SSRhysАй бұрын
Awesome to hear of others doing a similar thing! Good idea with the rollaway, next time I'm in a city I'll be buying one. Annoying packing up the whole camp to go dump grey water. Sounds like you've got a great setup. I've now got a generator and a charger from the landcruiser, so much better off. Cheers for watching - hope you enjoy your trip in the South too!

Just found your channel... we have a motorhome and are not offgrid to the extent you are but it's still fantastic to see where others go on the road. I'm glad your power situation is sorted, you've got one amazing caravan there. Two suggestions: Get a McKeowns fuel card via NZMCA. Cheapest diesel around. Also get a DOC pass (10% discount via NZMCA). It would cost you $175 for a full year of stays at DOC sites. Many are totally off grid and great value.
@SSRhysАй бұрын
That's awesome, hope you're enjoying your motorhome! Thanks, I'm quite happy with it, it's a good setup. I have a DOC campsite pass, they're great, I spend most of my time at DOC camps.

Hey man, just found the content, liking it. Re the power situation, are you short capacity in battery or is the current charging system underrated? Hearing you on a genny, short term supply, solved. But the larger questions is the availability, is there enough stored or is the replenishing system the issue.
